Learn how to speak to a patient who does not realize that they are addicted to opiates in a motivating way.

I don't know...motivational interviewing strikes me as really manipulative & condescending. LOL He's COURAGEOUS! Why? Because he agreed to hop off the big, bad opioid? I prefer doctors who level with me instead of patronizing me. The worst is the fake empathy. Other human beings can see through that kind of thing. Why isn't just saying: hey, I'm worried about the meds, can we start tapering off now? I hope the patient was offered a taper after 6 months of use, anyhow. I do appreciate the kind, non-threatening tone of voice and demeanor. Very low stress. I actually love this doctor. She seems cool, considerate of her patients, & she seems to effortlessly provide a low-stress, non-judgmental environment.

so she's probably not a trained actor so like it comes off fake, because you know Mental health workers arent actors so you know its not gonna be a good "movie". This is how clinical workers are trained to handle this, the approach she is using is investigative then offor positive changes, it is up to the client to make good choices. the role of the clinician is to help their clients learn how to view their reality and make informed decisions.

Love this video, thanks for making it! Also... first question is labeled "open ended" but it's actually closed.

Hi Eric! Just coming across this and hope you're not offended by my responding here too. You mentioned that the first question is marked "open ended". The first question I hear at 1:09 is indeed an open question. Actually a statement "Tell me..." which is typical for us to use in MI. Perhaps you were speaking about a different question? Cheers!

@@harmreductionrecovery I believe he is referring to the "So is there anything else you were hoping to discuss today?" rather than "What else would you like to discuss today?"

I would have said the same thing just to get one more script and then I would look for a different provider, or turn to street drugs. Glad I'm not living like that anymore. From his appearance he looks like a good candidate or medication assisted treatment.

That looked looked it would work, on another planet. Just another health worker ticking their KPI's. Nobody wins.

As someone that is highly trained and practices MI in my work as a therapist, this is a terrible example of competent Motivational Interviewing.

Kinzer, this video has over 30,000 views. Wtf. I'm guessing this video has the most views of almost anything I worked on at cfs.

Lol, opioids work great long term. I own a pain clinic. Research supports opioids for chronic pain. Sure, alternative treatments are great, but with chronic opioids.
