@@nathanthepostman Good review. I have ridden one just for an hour or so and you captured what I felt to a tee. Gearbox was nice, engine had that low down pull. Felt it ran out of steam a little and those warning lights as you get higher up the range were irritating. Didn't feel like 80bhp. Comfortable riding position. The front felt a little "dead" but I am not use to a big wheel up front. As you say feels like it wants to be loaded and go on an adventure. Nice finish on it.

Appreciate your honest review. Raw horsepower is very overrated, IMHO. My first bike (at age 46) in 2004 was a 1996 BMW R850R - a perfectly fine street bike but after a year I thought I needed more HP. Wrong! I needed better riding skills. Second point: My mantra is - I can always recover from taking a corner too slowly but I can't always recover from taking a corner too fast. Enjoy your new mount!

Congrats on the new bike, I've always liked the Guzzi heritage and 'quirkiness' compared to the major brands. I agree with you on the test rides. I didn't test ride any of the dozen bikes I've owned over the years, but did my research ahead of time and had great results. I doubt test riding would have made any difference. The Guzzi looks good, I like the design and would love to have one on my acquisition list. But the dealer is too far away to make it practical. Good observation on the lack of mud guards, that's one thing I really appreciate on my 2018 V-Strom 1000XT. The extended front fender does a great job keeping the rocks and dirt off the front. I put a Givi rear hugger on and it works great protecting the rear spring. Good luck and let us know how the first couple thousand miles go. Your video on the V-Strom 1000 was instrumental in my decision to buy one. Keep up the great assessments.

Don't know why people say that all Guzzi's have clunky gearboxes. The CARC on my V1200 make all gear changes very smooth, with no clunk between neutral and first. Nothing as rough as the BMW 1250 boxer is going into first. As for power, if you can survive on the Himalayans 24.5 bhp, then the V85TT's 80 bhp must feel massive!

Felicitations on the new bike, and thanks for the very thoughtful review. I’m a huge Guzzi fan since I owned a V11 Sport Ballabio, and I did get a test ride on the V85TT last summer. I bonded with that bike immediately, and I like that it’s air-cooled. Nothing feels like a Guzzi.This is the year I get a new bike and I’m really torn between the V85TT and the new 1100 Africa Twin. The Guzzi is quite a bit cheaper, and shaft drive is wonderful, but the Honda checks all the boxes-in theory. Your review has me thinking this all over again. Thanks! Oh, and I should add that I was a solid BMW guy (most recent a 2011 R1200 GS Adventure), but after years of ridiculously expensive service intervals, not to mention the initial high cost, I’m done with them. They’re a fine machine but overpriced, especially for parts and service.

I’ve made so many mistakes buying a bike without a test ride, including Honda CRF250L and NC750X DCT. I think it is essential to have a good hour or so on routes that you use regularly to at least test the seat comfort, seating position (Rider triangle of feet, bum, hands). I tried an Indian Scout Bobber, which had me out of the seat over a motorway expansion joint. I bought a used R1150GSA with a ten minute ride, and discovered two days later that the brake hoses needed complete replacement. I bought a Honda Shadow 750 which felt good on a show stand, but fifteen miles into my first ride as an owner, I knew that I had made a horrendous mistake. Poor power and poor comfort.

Nice honest update ...I had a test ride on an R1250gs November last year and absolutely loved it....then this came onto the radar....the only thing that has pressed the pause button at the moment is in Scotland (as far as I'm aware) is I only have one dealer/option for test ride/sales/service. ....that for me is an issue...watching with interest to see your findings as the sound from that engine/exhaust and looks has me hooked already...

MMm I bought a Motoguzzi 1200 Griso I loved the looks the engine and the handling brakes were great and changing the silencer it sounded great. I used to race a Guzzi in battle of the twins so I have always had a soft soot for Guzzis. So problems the main engine seal went on the crank at 3000 miles and it never handled as well after this was fixed the cam followers went twice once under warranty and at 5000 miles went again and not covered, The cam covers fill up with cream oil sludge about 1cm thick. This is because unlike old guzzis there is no breather for the cam covers the highest point of the engine and can be fixed by retro fitting breather from an old style Guzzi. I also am sure this is part of the problem with cam followers. Moto Guzzi response to any issues is dreadful. I hope you get better luck with your bike.It looks great and on today's roads a good ride and will help keep your licence clean.

Please make a short video on the seat cover when you get it & link to the manufacturer, simple upgrades like these matter and videos on them are handy to see how it looks, fits, etc. Do report on suspension feel and what you’ve done to it also if you can. And in your 1000 mile review, please touch on how it feels to ride all day - seat, geometry, bar vibes if any, motor feel, suspension when loaded, etc :) thanks for the vid!

Thanks for your thoughts. I bought one last September and have covered 3,000 miles, I still love it even after coming down from a much more powerful bike. Just make sure all your bolts are tightening though as I've lost a few... probably down to dealer pdi checks... Oh and another point the black finish around the engine casing near to the Guzzi motif where the black meets the bare finish is coming away... probably not helped by lack of front mud guarding.. Anyway Happy riding

I had a Tigger 800 for the day whilst my V7ii was serviced. It did not handle as well and was slower through rough B-road bends with a tendency to squirm. With double the horses but them all up the top end, it wasn't actually as quick on the road as my V7ii. It was certainly far less comfortable to ride. Horses for courses.

Good question. Chalk and cheese in many ways but I guess they share similar values in terms of fairly basic technology, slight underdog status and on paper there being better bikes you could buy. The Guzzi though is obviously smoother, faster and bigger than the Himalayan. It'll be the better bike for long distance road touring but on a muddy back road or for green laning then obviously the Himalayan remains a much more manageable bet. Which is why I've kept it.

Honestly if I'm able to save up enough cash by the end of this year this will be my next bike in 2021 and onwards... I can't help but find positive reviews with the most negative thing being said that the gear shift gives an audible "clunk" after riding it for a couple thousand km. Getting a Kardan at that price class in combination with a nice air cooled V2 that has very low fuel consumption and coupled with a 23l gas tank it just seems to be the perfect travel bike :O

Hi Nathan, I never understand when people make the comment you made about checking which gear you're in when you reach a roundabout etc. to make sure you're in the right gear. What's the right gear? 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th ? There's no such thing as the right gear by number no matter what the road situation. You change up and down gears dependent on road speed and engine speed. If riders have to rely on gear indicators to tell you the correct gear then they shouldn't be on the road! What happens when you have to ride a bike without a gear indicator? I've got a new GS with more than enough riding aids than you can shake a stick at, but that's the way they come. I don't class myself as some sort of super skilled VR46 rider but I honestly don't look at the tacho or gear display apart from checking I'm in 1st or top.
@nathanthepostman
@nathanthepostman 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Ian. It's a fair comment but I'm not sure we're coming from the same place with regards a gear indicator. I'm not referring to it as an indicator to tell you when to change - you obviously do that based on everything you mentioned - it's more an indicator of the gear you're in, which sometimes is handy for when, as I say, you approach a roundabout for example, with the clutch pulled in and you just want to be able to glance down to check what gear you're in and therefore know whether you need to knock down or not. I have many bikes without a gear indicator. A bike doesn't need a gear indicator, but if it has one I'm not sure why it has to be as compromised as it is on the Guzzi and some of the other bikes out there.
@MillfieldWheels
@MillfieldWheels 4 жыл бұрын
@@nathanthepostman I was referring to the digital gear display telling you what gear you were in. Approaching a roundabout I'll just close the throttle and change down as speed decreases and accelerate away in whatever gear I'm in. The slower the lower the heat.
@nathanthepostman
@nathanthepostman 4 жыл бұрын
@@MillfieldWheels If that works for you and you always know what gear you're in that's great. If the gear indicator is there then sometimes I like to just glance down and check to make sure I'm in second not the third for example. Saves fluffing the pull away.

I think,after owning some thirty bikes plus and many being big trail/adventure bikes that unless its really bad like the Urban GS,that you tend to 'mould' yourself to the bike once you have done some fine tuning of bar position,seat comfort and footpegs. Hope you enjoy it and if you find a few bits you are not too keen on...think back to the miles you did on the original postie bike and lack of creature comforts and gizmos and all will soon come into perspective.....

Nobody gives Guzzi enough credit. Most people don't know that lots of things on GS is copied from guzzi, their shaft drive concept is direct copy of Guzzi-Magni parallelogram concept, and Guzzi's own CARC was more advanced that BMW's.On top of that, Guzzi made this bike with 100% air cooled engine, not air/oil cooled engine. Guzzi previously made the Stelvio that was better than BMW's gs in every single way.
@nathanthepostman
@nathanthepostman 4 жыл бұрын
I take your points for certain but ultimately we'll all have different perspectives. I rode the stelvio and it was fine but I didn't personally think it matched the latest GS in any real way. But people love them and if they prefer them then that's all that matters
@ampm9771
@ampm9771 4 жыл бұрын
@@nathanthepostman Yes, I agree with you that it won't match the latest GSes, but when it came out first was brilliant, and you have to consider its price too. Guzzi didn't give you all the gizmos of BMW like tele-lever or electronic suspension, but it gave you CARC and those Marzocchi forks did the job more than good enough in hands of capable riders. Mechanically, Stelvio was excellent, 32L fuel tank, not as massive as GS, most importantly anyone could ride and handle it. I am 182cm 78kg(not the smallest), but I can hardly move 850gs around let alone 1250. Still I believe that Guzzi don't get the credit(hype) they deserve. I particularly appreciate your review of this bike which is identical to what I think about it as an owner of one. People say that 80bhp/80Nm is not enough, but you can use all of the power and torque at will and at all times. For comparison, Honda's new CB650R makes 94bhp which is more, but you have to rev it hard and put yourself at risk just to get anywhere near the max hp.
