Pianist Henrik Kilhamn takes on the second movement in Scriabin's sparkling piano sonata no. 2, Op. 19, titled "Sonata-Fantasy". It's a turbo fast Presto with a never-ending stram of notes, a Moto Perpetuo. The form is a kind of Sonata-Rondo, alternating the cascading waves with a developmental, legato section without ever losing its intensity.

I love your videos! They are giving me an appreciation of classical music pieces I either never heard before (like this one) or that I've heard but not understood well. Makes me want to play them, but as this is beyond my capabilities, I'll just listen to it. I like the emotional waves and the polyrhythms.

I find that the Moto Perpetuo feeling is actually pretty common amongst Beethoven's final movements, especially in his Piano Sonatas(though it occurs in his other works too). It's like as if the Allegro did not have enough dramatic momentum of it's own, he brings in the Moto Perpetuo(Allegro or Presto) to finish things off with sufficient drama. A very early example of it is the finale of his Piano Sonata in F minor Op. 2 no. 1 kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fpOAqNSfybSrhmg.html And in all pieces with this Moto Perpetuo feeling, I have noticed 1 thing in common and it also happens to be very common amongst Prestos regardless of feel. That is an almost equal distribution of Melody and Bass across both hands. Whereas an Allegro that isn't Moto Perpetuo will usually have a very weighted distribution of both Melody and Bass, though some get close to equal anyway(Pathetique Sonata First Movement for example).

Yeah, Beethoven's final movements sure have lots of momentum pushing forward!

Oh that's so interesting how you added the two beats at the end! Is this really plausible for performance? (Because I feel those bars the same... 😁🤫)

Well, it's not very orthodox obviously. I would say it depends on the circumstances, probably not a good idea for a competition but with an audience who are not familiar with the piece it shouldn't matter as much.

I have always wanted to play this sonata in the future. Would also like to see your analysis of Scriabin Fantasy Op. 28, which I guess you played in a competition before. This has become another favorite Scriabin piece of mine recently.

Wow! This was soooo interesting! You played it amazingly well. It seems to be a real knuckle-buster - a finger-twister. I could see that your hands were worn out at the end.

Excellent exposition! You could have also mentioned as an example of Moto Perpetuo the last movement of Chopin’s 2nd Sonata. You mention Scriabin’s admiration of Chopin, and I believe the last movement of Chopin’s 2nd Sonata would likely have been in Scriabin’s mind for the last movement of his own 2nd Sonata. Also appreciate in your video of the first movement the connection you made between this Sonata-Fantasy and Beethoven’s “Moonlight” (Sonata quasi una Fantasia). I programmed them together in a recital once: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ebhjdb15ma6bp5s.html. I very much appreciate your competent advocacy of this piece.

It has some similarities too with the presto from Chopin's op 35. Five accidentals, simple ending with tonic chord, ceaseless triplets, borderline tonality etc. Glorious music.
