Dorna announced Triumph's new 765 engine would power the Moto2 grid beginning 2019. But Triumph actually makes a bike you can ride today with that very engine in it, the Triumph 765 Street Triple RS. It is really really really special.
Right now you can compare Moto2 with World Supersport and conclude a Grand Prix chassis is worth roughly 2 seconds a lap. In 2019 that gage will vanish like exhaust vapor in the wind.

Just a little hint. Look under the passenger seat cowl for a fork adjustment tool. It's a round disc with knurled edges about the size of a quarter or so with with "Triumph" etched on it. Slide it out and you'll find there's a flat head screwdriver on the other side of it and it fits under the handlebars very easily. Makes adjusting the forks quite simple, eliminating the fuss of a full on screwdriver going past the handlebars.

I've had this bike for almost a year now and tried a few different set ups. I ride primarily road but lowering the front end 5mm on the forks transformed this bike for me. It really helps the bike steer with less effort.

Good video, gave my 3 week old 765 R a go, although it's got Showa SSF front forks, I think I may have made it better now. Found factory set up bit hard on road bumps. My fork adjustment was not under the seat, just a space, so thought Triumph were saving money cus I only brought an 'R', but it had slid down under some electrics under front seat.

According to Triumph's website the RS has 115 mm of fork travel, so if I understand correctly, bottom out would be 15 mm up from the end of the forks instead of 10 mm?

I attended your seminar the other day at Pro Italia which was very helpful, thank you! I bought this bike shortly after. The settings were different on my bike from the factory on the shock, it was the same on the fork though, so I started with the settings you recorded as a baseline. I weigh about 175lbs with gear and the rear felt really soft compared to the front and harsh at the same time over bumpy roads. I added two turns on preload, 2 clicks out on rebound and 4 clicks in on compression. Now it's starting to feel more even with the front but the sag went from even to 10mm less than in the front. Is that something I should be concerned about or should I continue to try and make it more even feeling with the fork?

I'm about a week off buying one of these. My only hesitation is that I'm told that the suspension is really stiff in the RS vs the R. Seeing this video makes me feel better about choosing the RS over the R. The only thing, I don't understand any of the terms. Is preload the same as sag? Could you recommend a level video for people who know absolutely nothing about suspension? I really do want to do it myself.... with a little help. Thanks!

If you look on page 150 of the owners handbook it tells you what the stock suspension settings are and gives you track and comfort damper settings, there are no recommendations on pre-load however. Having brought a C spanner to adjust the pre-load I can see why access is very tight, prepare to get bruised and loose some skin ;o). The rear is pretty much perfect for my 75KG fully togged up, the front feels a tiny bit harsh for my liking have taken 1/2 a turn off the pre-load on the front and set the damping to half way between road & comfort and it's a good compromise between soft & firm. As I am a short arse and on tiptoe all the time have taken the rear pre-load down 2 treads to 5 from 7, this is as soft as you want the rear. With stock pre-load on the rear it felt like it was on the verge of skipping under hard acceleration on bad roads now it glides over the bumps but still has some feedback.

Here in Chennai Triumph has better service and customer care than Kawasaki. Three of my friends own Triumphs, and i know the owner personally, so no issues. So check with riders in your area, see if which is best in your area and go with that. Cheers!

I might be too late commenting on this specific discussion here.. i personally thought i will end up with the same dillema z vs RS when i started thinnking of getting my self one.. but oh boy after riding RS for long test drive 60KM, bloody i was sold never wanted to even go to kawa.. for few simple facts that anyday is worth the extra money it asks.. The light weight of RS, the razor sharp handling, the top spec hardware i can bet my life on, the buttery smooth, most and most important in india is the bad traffic issue.. so freaking awesome heat management by triumph.. i just overall feeling of the mean machine loads of power with light rigid chasis with top spec hardware for your safety.. the 10k kms / 1 year of service interval, do u really need any more pointers here over kawa ???? a true superbike enthu can really make sense of why u pay for the premium parts.. and i am sold never looked back again i know kawa and other 800cc segment bikes can not just offer the top notch quality of RS.. i am sold brother, just booked it 2 days back.. i live in india.. hope this helps u.. if u have ever thought of getting RS, never look back, just never..

@catalystreactionsbw 5 жыл бұрын
Make sure you measure from the joint of the dust seal and the outer tube. You are missing around 6mm. For the road depending on levels of aggressiveness, 30-40mm total sag would be a good starting point. If you have a zip tie on the right fork leg, how much travel are you using now?

Hi Dave, I must say i've learnt a lot from your videos so thanks for the education ! Therefore , I can't figure out what is the priority between some settings. Considering i'm 205 lbs (93kg), Good riding abilities, 2018 str rs with ~ 10k miles,. Adjusting the rear shock tension gives me 0 static sag. Which means my spring rate is too "soft". I'm not sure about keeping this bike for a long time so I dont want to buy a new shock spring. So the question is : 1- What is the priority in my case between having 0 static sag and having the right preload numbers 2- What would be your recommendations concerning suspension settings ? Thanks for your time , have a nice day :)
@catalystreactionsbw
@catalystreactionsbw 2 жыл бұрын
Hello Gael. Thanks for the kind words and glad the content has given you a lot more knowledge. 1, You are not keeping the STR for long, so zero static doesn't matter and yes, a much stronger spring is needed. Set compression at 6 clicks from maximum and test travel used. Ideal is 3-4mm from the bottom out bumper. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gcuKh5R9qL-cc4k.html

Hi Dave, just got a new 2020 RS in January, so approx 1500km so far. I weigh approx 77kg without gear. Bike is mostly used on commuting to work and on weekends for fun. No track day yet. Suspensions are the same components as the 17-19 model. Bike is on factory Road settings - preload 14 clicks out - rebound 4 turns out - compression 5 turns out. I've put a zip tie on one of the forks and I'm 20mm from bottoming out. What do you recommend ?

Just clarifying for a 190lb rider you would remove some of the rear sag by increasing the number the number exposed threads above the shock lock ring. This would then hopefully increase the speed of rebound. Is this andincrease of thread count by one or two or will it need more. Cheers

So I took my RS to an Ohlins specialist. It was quite an interesting visit, as it turns out that Ohlins had no record of the rear spring used... So he ended up having to remove it completely to do some measurements on it and then try and determine how much preload could be applied. With my 100kg in full riding gear we ended up with almost all preload being selected. Compression at 12 clicks, rebound at 8. (Interestingly there is a 1 click difference between the spec sheet and the user manual for the "Road" setup, since this is supposed to be the default factory settings). I have yet to do some riding, and check for things like falling into the corner at slow turns, see if the TC interferes when accelerating hard out of a hairpin, and checking stability at very high speed. With my feedback a further iteration of tuning will follow (provided I'm brave enough to do the tests in current riding conditions...)
@catalystreactionsbw
@catalystreactionsbw 6 жыл бұрын
It will be interesting to see what static sag and rider sag numbers you have for the rear shock at present. You didn't mention a spring change, so you still have the OEM spring? Licensed copies of the Ohlins equipment do not show up on the Factory database hence the technition having no information.
@steveman1982
@steveman1982 6 жыл бұрын
It looks like Triumph did their best to get the Ohlins name attached to this bike at a low cost. A Daytona R unit would have been nicer, as well as the forks but that would raise the price of course... Indeed the same spring is still on. Probably a 105 or 110 N/mm one would be better suited for me the engineer said. I still have to do a proper test on the local twisties and report back. I don't remember the sag settings, however once I ask/measure them I'll make sure to share them.

Okay, finally ideal motorcycling weather. I found that the initial turn in was suddenly much slower, but at first thought is was just between the ears. After a few spirited rides I look a look at my tyre, there appeared to be edges forming on the leading edge of the thread. Also I got too much feedback mid-corner for my liking. So as an experiment I opened up the rebound damper 3 more clicks. The result was fantastic, really agile turn in and much quieter mid-corner. Had a lovely afternoon after that :) I'm really amazed at what a difference 3 simple clicks made. But I'm not sure how rebound in the rear ties into turn in feel, I would assume that to be a front end affair. (Could of course by psychological, feeling more confident and then pushing harder on the handle bar...)
@catalystreactionsbw
@catalystreactionsbw 6 жыл бұрын
If the rear is slow, you have a chopper with no feel on the front. Open the rebound and the rear returns to neutral giving you a sportbike :)
@steveman1982

A lot of stuff in between, but me and the mrs got around to do sag measurements for my bikes :) For the Street Triple RS (sportive street riding) all measured in mm with cold bikes (20c env. temp): Front static: 39 rider: 49 Rear static sag: 8 rider sag: 37 So given that fully suited up I bring 100kg to the scales I think I'll go and get a stiffer rear spring for my RS, preload is maxed out already. Not sure if it should be a 105 or 110 though. The front is still on default settings so the preload can be increased still. So aha, there's still better handling yet to come :) Compared to my '05 (pc37B) CBR600RR (track, intermediate level): Front static: 33 rider: 42 Rear static: 5 rider: 35 I'll give increasing both preload a go.

I have the Triumph Street triple 765 R. I am about 180 lb and 5'11.5. But I asked at Triumph to soften it. Now it is too soft. I don't know what the settings are now. Can you please tell me how to adjust it for my body? I guess it probably has to be firstly brought to the bottom or top setting for reference. I am looking forward to your feedback!

Sorry for being late to respond. I was very busy! I am: 171lb weight with underwear, 5'11.5 height barefoot, 820 km (509 miles) on the odometer. And also they adjusted at the dealership, I don't know the settings, but I don't like the setup. The front seems to dive a bit too much after the adjustment. The roads where I live tend to be bumpy.

Has anyone increased the preload on the rear shock? The manual has this comical warning on the shock suspension settings page; "The rear suspension unit spring preload is not rider adjustable. Any attempt to adjust the spring preload could result in a dangerous riding condition leading to loss of motorcycle control, and an accident." Is this lawyer-ese or is this shock really not all that adjustable afterall?
@catalystreactionsbw
@catalystreactionsbw 7 жыл бұрын
If the shock was not to be touch, what would you do to make sure it is not? Create a spring that that fit without preload collars AND make a shock body that had no threads on it. The warning is an insult to those who know what they are doing and why. Let's see how Moto2 responds to that in 2018
@nathanwiens108
@nathanwiens108 7 жыл бұрын
It's completely nonsensical. The manual refuses to acknowledge that the R and the RS have proper threaded preload collars. But then it informs you that the base S model is only preload adjustable (stepped collar) and how to adjust it. It's mind bottling.

I should post this up and see what others make of this odd statement from Triumph. I've had a couple of emails on the same topic with people second guessing themselves in sheer disbelief that such words would be printed.

The warning in the workshop manual is even more clear, saying that the stock setting must not be altered, and if in doubt of a change, it should be reset to the original length of 151,8 mm. I'm hesitating to change the pre-load because of this.

As per my statement in the video, preload at 14 clicks out, rebound at 4 turns out, compression at 5 turns out. Shock spring tension to be increased by 2-3 turns, compression at 10 clicks out, rebound at 14 clicks out

Depends on ability and speeds/road quality. 1.05nm fork and shock spring rate would be a good starting point.

It is perhaps one of the best things that has happened to Triumph in a long time. The last great thing was the expansion of the Bonneville range which launched Triumph into a lifestyle market.
