A nostalgic review of Microsoft Motocross Madness from 1998! Rainbow Studios is well-known for their MX vs ATV series and related offroad video games, but years prior there was MCM for Windows 95 and 98 PCs. And it was excellent. That invisible out of bounds cannon never gets old!

My dad grew up with the lead designer for this game, Robb Rinard. They were best friends for years, and stayed in touch all the way up until Robb passed away around a year ago or so. For a kid who didn't care about extreme sports at all, this game really captivated me. Just getting to crap around in the sandbox was such a new concept I'd never really experienced. When I discovered the out of bounds 'minefield' as I called it, I was in awe, it felt so mysterious and weird. I thought if I tried hard enough I could avoid the mines and get further in the map.

This and Moto Racer were my favorite bike games at the time. Rigorously played with keyboard, because the flight stick I had was accurate, but the dead zone was abysmal, having to steer all the way to turn (at the time I didn't want to risk with setting and I had no idea what a dead zone was). In PC shops I always saw the Sidewinders (especially the FF types, can't remember if the pad had any) with envy. Good thing nowadays all you need is XINPUT and every pad has force feedback...as much as two rolling weights in the pad's handles can give as feedback.

Beamng Drive brings back most of that nostalgic exploration for me. It even has a cannon, but you can go as far out of bounds as you like on some maps. Tons of user created addons, and no arcade physics. The only downside is that it is pushing me to upgrade my CPU to be able to handle more than 4 vehicles at once (ai, or multiplayer)

@@norkshit I don't know how to put it but back in a day open world games or even the ones that were linear still felt more open and full of life then compared to today's games. One example, I still to this day find San Andreas the ''biggest'' GTA ever because on top of lots of features the map aka world is full of attention to details and is well designed. GTA5 falls flat, it have allegedly a big map but feels more like I am exploring a neighborhood and not 4 cities so as wilderness. Everything is so linear and stupidly designed. The most you drive on are highways and main roads, there was always zero reason to go anywhere else. Plus the limited speed of vehicles feels like I am driving a Fiat500 and not a sportscar ... Everything about GTA5 it is just dumb. SA might be clunky by today's standards but it actually have damn content and a world to play with...

The modern indie game scene has kept the "fun before realism" spirit alive. The Madness game's oversized maps reminded me of a weirdcore indie game called "Juice Galaxy". It has a giant world, tons of secrets with lots of ways to completely break the game. Also I can second the recommendation for BeamNG drive.

Yes! I still have my old 98 SE disc from the Dell Dimension XPS 450 that my parents got way back in 1998/1999 or whatever. The AoE:RoR demo was just three campaign scenarios that actually never made it into the full game as far as I'm aware, but the second one could be played as a sort of 1v1 map due to how it was laid out, so long as you didn't mind the AI not really being smart enough to attack you. Between the AoE:RoR, Microsoft Pinball, and Motocross Madness demos, my early teen years were set until I ended up using my allowance to buy Unreal Gold, followed by Unreal Tournament 99 and The Sims, among others, all of which I also still have the original CD-ROMs for. Lost the boxes in my last move, but I saved the parts that count most.

one of the BEST things about this era of software was the packing. Not just the box, but also the whole installation process. I fondly recall inserting CDs into the PC, hearing the click-clacks of the drive as it all comes to life, the splash screen, the installation wizard, seeing the icon pop up on the desktop, all of this was just wonderful stuff. It had a charm. Installing something meant making a commitment; an event in itself; watching that wizard bar-graph move to the right as you see the screenshots or the box as an appetiser before the real thing begins. It was surely more special than clicking a drab 'Install' button on modern methods.

Oh god, this was one of the first games installed on my very first PC. It was just a demo, but little dumb me had a blast with it! Such a nostalgia trip, thank you!

My brothers and I sitting around our PC all taking turns playing this game. Good memories! Soon after, playing the Fury games on the PS2 was a normal Saturday morning ritual with my brothers. Awesome review! Thank you for always bringing awesome nostalgia PC content to today, appreciate your work!

Fun fact, when you go out of bounds if you reset your position with one of the keyboard keys as soon as you hit the wall keep pressing reset and you'll keep moving forward and eventually get outside of the map. Was proud of my self too when I got the game working in vista on my 8800 gts XD

I remember playing this demo long ago. And I remember I used to edit the texture file in Ms paint and being able to see it in the game. Loved this and midtown madness.

Motocross Madness got me hooked on computers. Played it at my friends house all the time. At the time I had a 386DX so I could only dream. Brings back a lot of memories. Thanks LGR!

I played the heck out of this game! This brings me back, you nailed the review. Baja and Stunt Quarry were the best, and there really was something meditative about riding the practically endless feeling maps.

Man this brings me back! I got a copy of this with a Microsoft Sidewinder Freestyle game pad. My brother and I would make crazy tracks where the paths would criss cross over each other and laugh whenever we would crash into bikes that were way ahead or behind us in the standings. So much fun!

I used to love Motorcross Madness 2 as a kid. I remember keeping up with the AI felt impossible in races back then, but I didn't care as I would just go off track and explore the huge maps for hours.

Same for this one, the AI was brutal but the open-ended map was welcoming. Great times just riding around doing basically nothing!

This game was ground breaking when it came to graphics. The large open maps but mostly the hills being ROUNDED. That was a huge leap forward at the time where every surface in all games were very basic polygons.

My dad was a teacher. There was this PC in the library of the school where he worked. Probably the only one with an LCD screen. All others had CRT monitors and ran either Fedora or Debian. I used to go to his school during my holidays and I would play this game for hours. It was fun climbing the large cliffs and being shot back in to the tracks. Even though I had opponents, I felt this strange solitude while wandering through the desert-like racetracks. I felt that same thing while watching this video. Can't believe it's been more than 15 years. Good old days.

I was a huge crusty demons fan back in the day. My dad gave me my first bike when I was around 6 or 7 years old, a honda z50 trailbike. Dinky little thing but I miss it. I used to race my dad on his KTM and one day it ended catastrophically when I hit a pothole on the trail and flipped several times. Walked away without injury somehow lol. Later graduated to a bigger bike, a honda xr50, and even sometimes rode my sisters Yamaha ATV. I don't remember the exact model of the ATV but it was a blast, I remember feeling like I was driving a tank or something just storming through the bush on it. The joys of growing up in rural Australia. Used to rip around paddocks and local bushland from morning til sundown with my mates. When we weren't doing that, we were watching Crusty Demons on VHS or playing Motocross Madness. Ah, great days.

This was the first game I learned how to make content for. Not the track editor shown in this video. It was custom quarry tracks you could make in other programs and then inject into the game. I got a copy of Paint Shop Pro and learned how to make maps using black and white gradients for the height of the ground. It felt awesome to build a stunt track, paint it myself and play it in game.
