I like the smooth design but any shiny plastic molds will look identical so it won't be tough to beat it with any soft materials. I suspect the redesigned versions will not have much of this look at all.

The E does have a better solution when it comes to the computer screen - intergrated and fluid. Kinda dislike the iPad-looking desugn on the other models

I would agree if they hadnt already copied this idea from the xc90 and the audi tt/a4 that came out with the full screen gauges first, as well as have award winning cabins already. Mercedes in this case is playing catch up in my opinion.

This E class is definitively way above the competition.The interior,honestly,is hands down gorgeous and the exterior is also sexy imo.The tech is really the main point there,it has rocket science tech,amazing safety features and overall a superb car.Nicely done Mercedes!

My '16 GLE 450 has this system and after some testing I find that it is quite useful. It provides an extra pair of "eyes" in case the driver (not me of course) becomes distracted or just not paying attention and helps save the driver from himself. The Distronic is a very handy way to stay within the speed limit in high enforcement areas and to allow for more relaxed driving in stop and go traffic. If there comes a time when there is no way to disconnect or override the system at that point I will opt out.

In the UK, you'd get fined and penalised if caught for checking your phone whilst driving even if the car was driving itself. It falls under "Driving without due care and attention".

Really cool review. Since the lease on my E350 is up in a few months I'm custom ordering one now. For me, I really want the 12.3 digital screen. Not sure why they only offer that with the Premium 3 package, but that's what you need to get for that screen. I would probably go with the Premium 3 package even without the 12.3 monitor. I will make use of the autonomous driving as I commute an hour hour each way to work in LA. I have complex wrist issues on both hands (not carpal tunnel) so I think it will help. One thing I'm puzzled about is the wheels. I think the wheels that are on the pic of the white E300 at the Detroit auto show put this car over the top. These are the same wheels used on E in the new commercial that just came out this week. They look absolutely awesome on the new E. However, no dealer knows how to get them. When you custom build on line you can't order them.

This car drives itself more than I drove it. I have a lot of confidence in mine after owning it for so long. the key is knowing its limitations. I work while on long drives - emails, texts, calls, you name it. I've changed my baby's diaper in the back seat once while the car was driving.

Awesome car! Self-driving system still needs a lot of development I imagine, but it's a good thing Mercedes takes it one step at a time and strives for the best result in each step.

I'm a service technician that drives to 6-8 different locations a day. I spend roughly 4-6 hours a day driving. I would use the heck out of this. I was very excited to see that the new Sprinter vans have driver assistance available. I had been going back and forth between Sprinter & a much less expensive Fort Transit, but this feature will probably make my decision for the Sprinter. Also, being a diesel is a plus. I drive primarily on one stretch of highway with tons of stop lights. 60mph down to a dead stop all day long. During rush hours, It's a royal beat down, and if you aren't paying attention every second, can be quite scary. During the mid-day traffic, I imagine this feature would really shine. Currently, I don't talk on my phone much at all, but will check my texts / emails at red lights. I always have navigation up on my iPad on my console. This feature would be very useful when looking at the map for directions, or if I wanted to field a call I could schedule an appointment without having to worry about plowing in to the car in front of me. It would take some time to get comfortable with this, but I welcome the technology. One question I had is how does the vehicle respond if someone were to swerve in to your lane or start to pull out in front of you from a side street?

I took delivery of my new e-class in January and used the drive pilot on the way home from the dealer. I'm using it every day to and from the office and in general I am very happy with the performance. It is in no way perfect and requires you to at least pay some attention. Traffic sign recognition is not 100% and the auto steer feature can scare you occasionally, however, I'm certainly happy that I opted for the drive pilot. I have a 1200km drive coming up in a few weeks, so I'm looking forward to seeing how it performs during long drives.

I just Purchased the E 300 series but would never use this feature because I need to be in total control of the car I just don’t trust modern technology that much. I must be in control!

definitely useful. i hate when i have my cruise control set and traffic slows down and i have to hit my brakes n turn my cruise control off and then wait until I can turn it back on again. this would eliminate that.

100% would like to see the Pilot software become more prominent and eventually standard on vehicles like this. I'm moving from driving a Tesla back to Mercedes and was happy to see the driver assist program available. I don't use it around the city, but like the assistance on long road trips.

This technology can prevent couple of accidents if you get distracted and situation needs quick reaction, but if you gonna 100% trust it - it gonna cause even more. For example what gonna happen if you start passing the front car and then this car starts to turn left to pass something on the road? Would a car automatically recognize that and how will it respond? Will it hit breakes, turn more to the left? What will happen we cant really predict.

Autonomous driving technology has its usefulness for those rare occasions when it would be called upon other than as a party trick to impress. On the whole though, as a driver who still very much enjoys driving, I would like to be old school and drive the car myself, especially if it were at high speeds.

You don't have to hold the wheel for so long to refresh the timer for distronics. A simple slight nudge on the wheel and letting go is plenty

I can't wait for this feature to become available in an affordable car (Ford Fusion Hybrid, Honda Accord, etc). I commute to work and back home 2 hours everyday which is very stressful and would love this type of AutoPilot feature in my car.

I know this is an old review but I’m looking at a CPO 2017 E300 right now and found this whole series of 4 videos very detailed and helpful (as I do most of your stuff). Thank you! As to the question at the end, I think the P3 package value is really in the additional active safety features (even when I’m doing the driving). I might use this system in stop and go LA/OC traffic but I’d probably be too scared to really give up control. The real value is that you get a number of systems like active blind spot, active lane keeping, active braking with cross traffic support, etc.

When the system won't allow a lane change, does the turn signal still blink? I would find that to be a problem...might elicit a swerve from the car in the next lane ("oh shit, here they come!"). I know I sweat bullets when someone indicates a lane change when it's not safe.

Just loved the car and the review was superb,now how would I use this system?Well,that's easy,I would window shop every shop in London downloading their glyphs as I go and if it really worked in the real world,I'd let it drive around whilst it dropped me off to shop or more likely to go work and find what my colleagues are up to-that would be a surprise for us all.I would never stand in the rain again,of course the congestion would be horrendous.

I'd probably would not really use the systems at the level they are in today. At least in normal driving. In stop and go traffic certainly, but not at higher speeds. I think I'd constantly check what the system is doing, probably to such an extent, that I'd actually drive more attentively then when driving myself in the traditional way that I'm used to. But in the future, when cars really will be able to drive completely autonomously, even without a driver in them, that would be a different story... Imagine like ordering your groceries online at your local supermarket and your car just goes and collects them for you... Or having something like a parking spot portal website / app in big cities. You just drive where you wanna go, book a parking spot in the App and the car goes off and parks itself there (parking sport could be like 20 mins of driving away or something). You just to what you wanna do, go into the App and order your car to come back to your current location and pick you up. Or the car bringing the kids to school, without you having to get up... That's the sort of level of autonomous driving, where it is no longer a gadget or yet another safety feature, but where it actually revolutionizes the way we use our cars. But well, that's still a long way to go.

Having that tech is really just something cool to play with in your new $60k car. However It's not a must have. I probably would drive myself more than how I would use that feature. The only way this feature could work flawlessly is if every other car had it and the were all using the system but as long as their are editor drivers on the road you gotta be on alert, which I find to be more of a work anticipating something happening than just being in full control. The other reason would be if roads were flawlessly marked but they are not always such would allow a car like this exercise its potential with the driver putting full trust in the car. So as of right now it's just a really really really REAAAALLY cool gimmick to show your friends.

The new S Class has enhanced feature over and above the E. It will autonomously re-start after a stop at traffic lights without any intervention from the driver if the traffic sets off within 30 seconds. Additionally, a lane change initiated by the driver only needs a tap on the indicator stalk. If the conditions do not allow the car to move to the next lane then within 30 seconds the car will initiate the turn indicators and perform the manoeuvre itself. The new system also uses map data to slow down in corners, roundabouts (mainly Europe) and intersections meaning that the car does not need another car in front to regulate its speed appropriately. Additionally, where the car is following a car and the road markings become invisible then it can follow the car and still steer using its direction and features of the road such as hedgerows, kerbs etc. The S Class system builds on the great work of the E class and heads more truly towards full autonomy. However, Mercedes say this is still only a level 2.5 autonomous car not a level 3. I have a new S Class on order, due to be delivered in March so I will update you on my findings once I have had the chance to drive the vehicle. I do however live in England so the system may have features which differ to this in the US.

I don't think I would use it. Not because I hate in-car technology, but because it's not fully autonomous. It's like 90% there. You still had to pay attention when you were driving, which is what I think people get confused by. These driver assistance tech features are there to assist the driver, not drive for you. When you had to hold the turn signal to make the car switch lanes is very cool, but if I was in a hurry somewhere, those precious seconds would get in the way of me driving. Awesome for a road trip, or highway cruising, but a pain in the ass for city traffic.

Good to see MB finally catching up to Tesla ;-) In my Tesla Model S I find this system very useful during long, monotonous highway driving and in stop-n-go traffic to reduce driver fatigue. One difference is the Tesla will come to a full stop and resume with traffic flow based upon traffic ahead of it all without the driver having to reengage the accelerator pedal. The auto lane change feature is nice but I only use it on a true divided highway with no crossroads and where driver traffic is more predictable. The Tesla also provides excellent traffic awareness real-time graphics, with heat maps, in the dash to reassure the driver as to what the car may or may not be seeing at any time, along with audible & visual warnings as well.

They certainly are taking their time with offering a full EV, hah. If nothing else Tesla has forced every automakers' hands when it comes to stepping up their games in both tech and full-on EV offerings. You may argue that Tesla is moving too fast. I argue that the other automakers have been moving too slow when it comes to getting off the ICE. And let's not even start with updating existing cars with over-the-air software updates.

It's mostly a party trick. Until a standard is invented where all cars communicate to each other and to sensors in the road I will have trust issues. I can see a few instances where it can be practical. But basically adaptive cruise and a bumper to bumper creep system are the great ones.

Seriously, this seems way more stressful when just driving it myself. Can't wait for the future when I can just put it in drive and it'll do everything on its own until I arrive at my destination. Right now it's just way too many rules IMO.

Autonomous driving can be useful when you want to send an urgent message on your phone to someone. Or to stretch yourself for a bit especially when doing long distance driving in area where you can’t make a stop or you don’t want to make a stop to relax your legs

For LA commuting, I would definitely use adaptive cruise control with the braking... For full autonomous driving, would be perfect for long distance driving to Vegas or what have you. I would be sweating bullets too having my hands off the wheel in LA traffic.. You never know with these local LA drivers, especially if they all go for autonomous in the future sweat 😓

I personally like driving the car myself, but when you are going on a road trip for x amount of hours it would be nice to relieve the driver for a little. Of course that doesn't mean the driver can go and take a nap, but its enough for you to grab a drink and maybe do some arm stretches.

My 2014 Q50 keeps the lane with active cruise control. I can literally not do a thing on the interstate for miles with twists and turns. Car doesn't stop or say anything till I turn it off. This isn't new and was available for 54k with 328hp bullet proof V6 at that!

mercedes E autopilot and safe futures are more adwanced then tesla model s..mercedes just want you to keep hand on wheel for safe reasons..but car still steer it self ..you just keep hand on the wheel

Autonomous driving mode is great, 30 sec is more than enough to check something in wallet or jacket that is on passanger seat / back seat. Check or program radio station / find my fav track. check documents or something in gloves compartment... Right now I always have to stop to do such things and it happens a lot in every day 80km long drive. I do not like to do such things while driving as I like living in this world too much.

If these systems reduce accidents I'd bet at least part of the reason has to be that you end up being more attentive to what's going on, because they don't really work all that well. Nice car though.

I personally don't like the technology I am the type that likes driving and being in control of the car and enjoying the driver input etc.. some may argue that it's useful when you have to send a text but you can send a text with voice control in the car via carplay or android auto. However I can appreciate the tech as a gimmick to wow friends and maybe your date..

I can imagine this conversation with the cop in my head: "Uh sorry sir, I am not texting and driving here because the car is driving itself..." Sure that will spare you a ticket! Also, it feels so unnatural to hold the turn signal to change a lane, why is that more convenient than just use the steering wheel and do it yourself? All these features are cool and all but just makes you think that they are just a step on the journey to full autonomous. Until then, I say keep off my car electric nannies and I am the pilot.

If you are that impressed by this you didn't checked the Audi's autopilot with nvidia artificial intelligence. And that is not level 3 of AD is almost level 2. Tesla has level 2 and Audi in July 2017 will be first vehicle equipped with AD level 3 for many years to come with their brand new A8. Mercedes sqid they will integrate AD3 by 2021 and BMW are not sure when but they will do it.

Whether we're in 2016 or 2025. No matter how advanced autonomous technology is or works. Humans will still want to "drive" themselves. It's the pleasure of maneuvering a beautiful car yourself. That's a luxury itself. As you demonstrated, as much as you want to trust the Drive Pilot system, you will consistently react by grabbing the wheel. To me. I feel that technology will not be as perfect to fixing its own mistakes as humans can. Look at Tesla. Humans can crash a car all day long but computers will never be trusted to do every possible maneuver without putting caution, fear or skepticism into the driver. But applause to Mercedes-Benz for how far they've come in this segment.

It is certainly a mistake to present these autonomous systems as any other thing as a driver's aid. Because this is what they are. Manufacturers stipulate that drivers should pay full attention to the road at all times. Checking phones or (unfortunately) watching movies while driving is not the point of these systems. Personally I see autonomous driving systems as a way to cover greater distances without stopping, eventually enabling us to go cross-country more easily and safely. Autonomous systems fulfill the same function as auto-pilots in airplanes.

I'm getting on in years now, so for me, I would use it to catch anything I may (occasionally) miss. About 10 yrs ago, I owned a duel cab utility type truck, it had a few blind spots, this would be the perfect answer for poor car design, resulting in large and Dangerous blind spot issues. However, I honestly would Never 100% Trust this technology. When I feel I'm no longer a "Safe" Driver, I will Surender my drivers licence, as Ultimately, the Human being behind the steering wheel "Is Responsible" No If or But's About It!!! I have spoken to a few people who think these "Autonomous Driving Vehicles" are heaven sent! They feel this technology is purposely designed for their socially irresponsible actions. Like if I'm to drunk to drive myself home, then my high tech self driving car, can take my useless wasted Ass Home....."No" is my answer to this kind of crap. Tesla is caught up in such an issue Now! Sorry to the man who was killed, but he would still be sucking air, if he had been Paying a little more Attention, to his surrounding (hazardous) environment.

As it is now those systems are an useful aid in heavy multi lane traffic. But they are not that autonomous. Motoman you have seen what's the traffic on narrow european roads (Italy, France... except Germany) well there this system is not applicable in my thought. Only after the waste majority of cars got car to X systems cameras and radars, autonomous driving will become reality. By the time this happens I suppose cars as we know them today will start to extinct. It's now the time to get some reliable not so high tech dynamic car to use it afterwards.

Ummmmm.....anyone seen the interior of a Riley? Tech = best yeah, sorry I see pistols & cylinders as in 1917. Self drive is long, long overdue.

Tesla can go into a garage in the us. And it can do it's driving without any touch unless driver intervention is needed. Why can't the hundred year old car companies do the same thing

+Candisa You also have to take into consideration that the Mercedes is a global car and they have to adhere to the laws of all those countries. The Tesla is only for specific markets and can have more freedom in their specifications

NO! If I wanted to do something other than drive, I'd take the buss or call an UBER! These features do not add to the FUN of driving, they, like automatics take the involvement out of driving!

People like you don't live where there's traffic. When you commute 2+ hours a day in traffic driving on weekdays IS NOT fun.

I don't understand why you would have an autonomous feature that only drives itself for 1 minute. Why not have it like the Model S where it will just keep lane and manage speed as long as you want on the highway. If people don't want to pay attention and abuse the autonomous feature that's their issue and they should assume their own responsibility. What a pointless feature.

I went from a BMW 3 series to a 2017 E300. The 3 series drove and handled better. My E300 was peppered with problems. Had to bring it in the shop over 25 times in the first few months. Ridiculous! I bought a car do drive, not to bring it into the shop twice a week for several months! They put me in another E300 (this time a package with heads up display and massaging seats, etc.). First few months, in the shop over 6 times, and Mercedes initially refused to fix the creaking in my door when it went over bumpy roads because they could not duplicate it! Then they were able to duplicate it but wouldn't fix it because it wasn't "continuous" enough! Screw Mercedes! What a POS product they produce! I took a huge loss on the trade in for a BMW. It's night and day! The BMW drives and handles great and has no rattles. It nearly glides everywhere I go. I paid a very steep price to experience how bad Mercedes is! I will NEVER buy a Mercedes again!

Pretty boring really. My CLS 550 was based on the boring old E Class from 10 years ago and still looks better

Tough call - both are very much in their infancy stages. Just from a TECH point of view, I prefer the Mercedes system because it will do a bit more and is technically a higher level on the Autonomous Driving scale.
