The third part of this series on converting a Kerry AG Lathe to run from a single phase supply.
The spindle motor is a Newman 'Elf' motor. From the factory there is only provision for wiring the motor in Star or Wye configuration.
To run the motor on a VFD we will need to run Delta configuration, for low voltage three phase.
We took the motor to our friend Dave, proprietor of The Electrical Repair Co. based in Collier Row.
Dave has been in the industry some 50 years and knows a thing or two about motors.
There the lacing and sleeving on the windings was cut, to reveal the original star point, which was cut and new cable soldered into place.
Following a successful test run on 220v i took the motor back to the workshop to refit to the lathe and fix the issues with the flat belt pulley.
