Motor Boat & Yachting

4 жыл бұрын

The first choice to make when arriving at a berth in a single-engine boat is whether to go in bow or stern first. Bow-in is usually simpler, however, best practice is to leave the boat as you found it, which in this case was stern-in. Boat training instructor Jon Mendez shows us how it's done...

That's how a pro does it. One of the things I've learned when watching this series is that if you are in a hurry, you are doing something wrong -> Slowly does it. Thanks for a great video, once again! 👍

Having been sailing for over 40 years, and 25 years skippering charter yachts in the Greek Islands almost every marina is a stern to mooring with the added practice of dropping the anchor or picking up a buoy, a bow thruster is definitely a plus especially in windy conditions and in some very busy marina’s you may have to moor up 3 or 4 boats out,added to this is the drama of anchor chains been crossed with other vessels again can be an added drama when leaving, my little tricky devise is an anchor trip which lifts other chains up retrieve your anchor and drop the others back into the water and exit, most happens in busy and congested marina’s, but all good fun and most other skippers are usually very helpful.

Hi Jon thank you for this, it was very clear and instructive. A question from someone who's only experienced sailboats ; I'm guessing when you're in neutral the boat almost don't respond to the steering, and you need to get the propeller to turn a little bit for the boat to start turning, is that right? Thank you!
@kenlee-97
@kenlee-97 3 жыл бұрын
Stern drives don't have rudder, but instead require the whole leg on a stern drive to turn and at the same time the prop has to be operating to be able to turn the boat.

warp21drive: with yours it’s more about initial set up. Where you place the boat at the start of the process, it all flows from there. Knowing the prop wash and the way the stern kicks when astern. If you use these components to your advantage rather than fight them you are 75% of the way there.

Do you have any propwalk? Do you have any rudder or is it just a prop on a leg? This type of boat handles far differently than a traditional single propped boat that has a fixed proppler ahead of a large rudder
@muratisteinkeks
@muratisteinkeks 4 жыл бұрын
Graham Hunter The boat probably has two counter rotating props on the outdrive. So there is no prop walk as they cancel each other out. With an outdrive you have very sharp controls even at low speed and in reverse.

That's the easiest way to berth the boat, it will hang like a flag in the breeze. Going stern in on the opposite side, with wind (or tide) on the bow is trickier, or with a decent cross wind blowing you off your berth. As well presented as it is, this is ideal conditions.

Stern-in method? Best practices?? So you should park the boat the way you found it? That means that if it was done wrong you should perpetuate that? Except for bow thruster boats, forward movement provides much better control of the boat than backing in. If stern in makes more sense, how?
