Great video comparing that old Lee filter with a new Motorcraft. Back in the 1970's I always used Lee filters in my AMC Sportabout and my Dads Plymouth Valiant. I used to buy them at "Two Guys" department store where people would change their oil in the parking lot making a mess on the ground. I remember the AMC dealer telling me they were junk filters and I should not use them. However that AMC went over 200K miles and it never used any oil so they must have done a decent job. They disappeared around here when the discount stores like Two Guys and Caldors went away. I wonder what ever happened to the company. I think Champion bought them out but I am not sure about that.

Morning Pete, I was excited to see the Lee filter being compared to the Motorcraft filter in this video. My friends back in the early 1980's believed that Lee filters were junk with no filter media. Department stores like Zayre's and Caldor's sold them and I used them. Lee filter looks good to me! I remember my Dad saying" They would not stay in business if the filter was no good". Glad to see that my buddies were wrong on this one. Awesome video! Have a nice weekend...

That FL-300 fits my Dodge with a slant six and I've used it a couple of times. But I'll have to give credit to the Lee for having features I didn't expect to see for something that old, like a bypass valve and painted leaf spring.

Back in the 60's & 70's LEE filters were every where. Found at most all big box stores of the day. The orange Fram was a step up.

Pleat spacing uniformity on MC, poor. Ugh. Yep, the Lee spacing much better. Back in that day I'm sure I used a Lee filter or two. It looks decent. Thanks for the video.

I worked in an auto parts store back in the 80’s and this video brings back memories. We carried AC Delco, Motorcraft, Fram and of course the store brand which was manufactured by Puralator. We sold more Fram and Motorcraft than any of the other filters. I stuck with AC Delco because I had a Chevy. Thanks for the great video!

Love the Time Travel video's. Even though LEE oil filter is bigger and has more filter media, it's most likely made of paper compared with Newer Synthetic Media. Motorcraft wins this one. Wish could go back in time and give the Mustang Owner the Newer Motorcraft Filter with Royal Purple Engine Oil.

I haven't seen a Motorcraft filter that poorly built in a long time. I wonder who made it. It resembles the Auto Xtra filters, but you'd expect that from a $1 filter.

Holy Cow, I remember Lee oil filters! I used to get them at ADAP for my Impala. Damn I am old. The Lee looks like a really nice filter, nice to know I was using a decent filter back in the day. We used to do 3K oil changes back then and I am sure that was state of the art in filter technology, Now I know why they said to do 3K oil vhanges. I do like that upper bypass valve but damn those pleats on the Motorcraft look like it was assembled with a hangover. I wonder what happened to Lee filters, I stopped using them after I got my Toyota and started using Purolators back in the mid-80's

Thanks! I forgot about Lee filters. That Motorcraft media spacing looked terrible on top of that as a retired machinist those motocraft threads or lack of make me cringe. I stoped using motorcraft filters on my old 2000 f150 a few years back because it seemed like they were going downhill.

Interesting you have an FL-300. My '86 Turbo Coupe uses that one. I switched to Purolator ONE series PL14670 recently. Speaking of Lee filters, there was the time when Mount Saint Helens eruptured and Paul Harvey had mentioned on his radio show that the only cars that survived breathing in all of that ash and soot were the ones using the Lee Two Stage air filter. Do you remember those air filters? We even had discount places like K-mart, King's, and Mr. Wiggs selling the Lee oil filter in the 1970s. Hire's, maybe NAPA, Nationwise, and Western Auto were the auto parts stores selling Lee filter products.

They ran such heavy weight, sludgy conventional oil back then that maybe they needed the looser media. Pretty disappointing showing from the motorcraft though. You have to almost try to have spacing that bad. The Lee definitely has the cooler graphic design, but I like the elimination of unnecessary plastic in the modern packaging. Another great video!
