Brake pad material and dirt can all get baked onto your bike’s brake discs after hard or extended use, leaving a dull, discolored surface. Any time you’re installing new brake pads it’s important to remove this glaze to give the new pads a fresh surface to bed into, but deglazing your rotors could also be the fix for squeaky brakes or a pulsing brake lever.
--
Road Test Editor Ari Henning recommends using a 3M Scotchbrite pad (green/heavy or red/medium) for deglazing the rotor surface. Scotchbrite is safe and any scuffing material left behind is not nearly as abrasive as that left by sandpaper. If you elect to use sandpaper, remember that this type of abrasive will leave grit residue that requires extra diligent cleaning. Do not use course grits and try to use a good quality automotive-grade paper or emery cloth that is coated.
Keep in mind that a lot of damage can be done with incorrect sandpaper choices or by using power sanders. So the safest bet is to follow Ari’s advice and use Scotchbrite. Keep it simple and watch the video to see how easy this regular brake maintenance procedure is.

I do this every time I wash my bike, change the oil, change a tire, and of course before installing new pads. It's an easy thing to do that makes a noticeable difference that a lot of people overlook or just plain don't know they should do.

Using sand paper is a completely different thing, and has nothing in common with this video. In this video, he merely cleaned the grease off the rotors. Sanding, actually removes some of the surface material, and basically restores the brakes to "like new" condition. I think sanding would be better, honestly. Getting a little bit of oil on brakes or clutch discs, immediately causes them to get glazed, and not work properly. Sanding seems like the only way to truly fix the surface, so it becomes high friction again.

Thank you. I feel like sandpaper might actually be helpful for severely glazed rotors that have been exposed to oil, or road grime? You can sand motorcycle clutch fiber discs to fix a slipping clutch, and then reassemble, and they are as good as new. I suspect that the glazing is mostly on the pads, and the easiest way to fix that, is to put some abrasive polishing compound on the discs, and then go for a quick ride. Or to sand the discs down with new crosshatch marks, which will scrape the glazed debris off the brake pads as you apply the brakes. The issue with sanding the discs, is that you would need to use very fine sandpaper, maybe 600 grit of 1000 grit, with water, to make sure you don't see the visible sanding marks. Also don't get the sandpaper near the anodized color treated aluminum or finished surfaces.
@EliteGeeks
@EliteGeeks 2 жыл бұрын
Using sandpaper will often take off metal material that is harder than glazed pad material. This can be unsafe. Metal such as stainless steel rotors are heat treated, think of it like crystal structures and the surface is harder than the inner material, if you wear into it enough to break the harder crystal layer and expose the softer material and it can lead to a crack or shatter the rotor. Think of it like a Rupert's Straw. Where the inner glass is softer than the outer. The same goes with metals, where the outer layer is quenched when hardened. Unlike car rotors, these are typically FAR thinner and less material can be removed, and often not enough to let them be cut, or even sanded. Better Rotors are usually harder, deeper with a longer heating/shock process.

I was talking to a friend of mine who used to be a bike mechanic and he was shocked that I was using sand paper to deglaze my rotors..In fact he was shocked I was using any rough surface to do this...Is this some new technique? What about rear drum brakes? I had my drum brakes changed by my mechanics and after taking it back time after time because they were squealing like shit, they said it could be due to the old brakes making grooves into the drum that they can't fix...Is this right OR should I try the same technique of sanding the drums much like the I did with the rotors in the from which worked perfectly?

For the rear rotor, what are your thoughts on keeping it on the bike (R1200gs), start it on it's center stand locked down and running it in 1st gear with the wheel off. This way it'll turn at low idle speed and you can put a piece of "blocked" sandpaper on the rotor and let it turn until resurfaced. You could "grit down" and then finish with steel wool. Thoughts sir? Thanks for your video.

@@AQHackAQ Nah! It's not stupid because it cleaned the surface. It's not pointless because the point was to clean the surface. And it may have been a tad unsafe but I don't mind. And what does the size of the rotor have to do with wanting to get them deglazed / clean? If you bought a new rotor and received one with a rough and grooved surface, then complained to them about it, would you accept from them if they told you "It's fine! The rear disc isn't even large in the first place." ? Your comment makes no sense and you may agree when you get sober/clean later.
@AQHackAQ
@AQHackAQ Жыл бұрын
@@mattcero1 Lol. The small size of the rotor means smaller surface area to clean. Which part of that very simple logic is too difficult for you? All it takes is 4-5 revolutions to fully clean the whole thing. Why in the world would you need to turn the engine for a menial task?
