With a long trip planned, we thought we'd have a night out with the new Wingman of the Road tents just to try them out 🤦🏻‍♂️

Got myself a Toucan (even if only myself) will sleep in there). Ditched the foam mattress and their bag though. I will roll it in such a way that the width remains at 90cm. My hard pannier setup on my bike measures 90 cm accross anyway, so the diameter is down to 30 cm uncompressed right now. I have to put on my bike (ride a Yamaha Tracer 700) how it works. The mattress is the real problem, as I have decided on a Outwell Dreamcatcher, also 90 cm wide. Most likely, I have to ditch my topcase. But I can live with that. My sleeping bag packs super tiny (comfort is only around 20 degrees, which is fine for me). One of the panniers will be occupied by my cot (yes, I put that whole thing onto a Klymit Cedar Mesa 90 cm wide cot). There will still be some space left in that pannier. Other pannier will take my other things, plus a tankbag has to do. We shall see how this plays out. We do not intend to cook, so it might work. No kitchen sind for me, I guess...but we exclusively camp on German campgrounds anyway. If there is space for one of those tiny gas cookers, I will bring it. Sounds wild, but it looks really good right now.

I googled your replacements regarding the mattress, sleeping bag and cot and have to say, that compared to the standard wingman kit, you'll be Glamping 5* 😌 looks fab 😊 Wishing you a great trip and hope you enjoy your setup ... Thanks for watching 👍

@@gtube153 Thanks. By now, I packed the whole thing up and it came out the exact same dimensions as my luxurious sleeping mat. So now easily stackable in front of my topbox (which I was prepared to leave at home. Now it most likely will be empty, which is not a bad thing). After reconsidering, I turned the groundsheet into an additional tarp by adding several webbing tabs with eyelets. Also added some more tarp sticks to hold up the thing. This way, my husband and I will have a nice, comfortable sitting area with more than enough shadow and rain protection (I made it so that rain can flow down from the black tarp over the olive one attached to my tent and flow down. It was not difficult to do, and it adds more versatility to their tents. As the groundsheet became a tarp, I also carefully removed the fastening cobra straps and replaced them with ugly generic, neon-orange tightening straps. Which are 200 gr lighter. If it works as intended, I might show it to Wingman of the Road.

great video, really fantastic use of the drone, loved it, gave me some ideas. I have to admit the first time I put my goose up I thought the pole might snap, there is really not much give and I had to give it some beans to clip it in, it's a very tight design, I hope the guys hooked you up with a new pole.

Hi GazOutdoors, thanks for your kind feedback we really appreciate it 😊 Yes, Wingman replaced the pole instantly and was tested straight away ( in the living room 🤣 ) so we're ready to go again ... Our next trip starts in a few days time 😁 Thanks for watching 👍

I'm going to add a better sleeping bag and a Kilos Gear air mattress to my Toucan when I get it. The included pad and sleeping bag won't work for my needs, but packing everything in the tent is pretty cool. No need to buy a Kreiga US40 to put all my camping gear, remove that bag and the tent pays it self 😂

Yes I agree, although wingman state the sleeping bag is only a 2-3 season bag, I found that even at around 10°c I was cold during the night. The foam mattress was ok if the ground was reasonably flat but for us, the simplicity of everything rolled up into one unit was the selling point ... Unfortunately however, both Toucans have since been returned to wingman due to a problem with water ingress ... Thanks for watching 👍

@@gtube153 if I look at the price, my North Face Stormbreak 3, air mattress and -18° sleeping bag is probably a better choice. I just need a Kreiga US40 to carry it all right now, it makes no sense to buy a tent that I'm going to take apart 🤣

The leaking seams were really bad, to the point where we were only left with maybe 40cm of dry mattress. The mattress and sleeping bag soaked up water from both sides with water underneath the mattress also. Wingman identified a problem with the seams and issued us with a refund ... @gtube153 thanks for the reply. I'm really torn now as I really like concept but if it lets in water then it fails on first principle. I do have a tarp I could put over if it rains but it's just more faffery...

Is going with the bigger one a huge difference? Looked a bit massive on the back of the bike. I ride a street glide not sure how I feel about the tent resting/rubbing on the saddle bags while on the road

Hi Roberto, I haven't seen a Goose rolled up so can't compare but looking at the dimensions on Wingman's page there's only 6 cm in roll size and 2 cm in length. I have found though, the size differs every time you roll the tent up depending on how far you fold the tarp/ground sheet sides around the tent before you roll. If the roll is too large, it could push against your back. I too was shocked a little when I put the tent on my bike for the first time but after a few days I didn't really notice it. The problem I have, is that my pannier lids are on the top, so obviously when the tent's on my bike I can't access my panniers unlike my son who has side access. As for the rubbing, maybe some small pieces of foam between the tent and your bags 🤔 Once inside the Toucan, even though its only 20 cm larger in width / height and 10 cm in length, I'm pleased I bought the larger size as I think the Goose for me would feel a little cramped ... Pretty badly if I'm completely honest but it was purely because of being cold 🥶 I think that night the temperature was around 6-7°c ... The mattress was comfy enough and there was plenty of room inside the sleeping bag being the Toucan but just not warm enough ( for me ? ) Wingman does state on their website however that the sleeping bag is only a 2-3 season bag. So we have now bought an additional sleeping bag and put this inside the original making it altogether more cosy 😁 Thanks for watching 👍

So,,, Did you keep the tent or stick with Hotels ? Did the Wingman company warranty the broken pole ?

Hi Michael, yes we kept the tents and took them with us on a recent Scottish trip, no hotels 🤣 Wingman of the Road replaced the pole without question within a couple of days 😁 Thanks for watching 👍

Hi Content of Character, we decided to try our tents ahead of our longer trip simply to see how they sat on the bike, how comfortable it was on the bike, would the tent move around on the bike while on rougher ground, putting the tents up in a real world situation rather than the living room 🤣 etc, etc you understand and thought we'd hopefully demonstrate this in our video 🤔 Wingman show product videos on their own channel that might be of better use ... Far too big a pack size and too heavy for my liking taking up too much space on the bike, I'll be getting the Lone Rider Adventure, pack size 44x15cm and only 3,5kg not 13kg .

There's no arguing that the Wingman is on the large size ( these are the larger two man Toucan tents ) However, we like the simplicity the Wingman offers with the mattrass and sleeping bag rolled up inside, we just added an inflatable pillow. I think the Wingman is perfect for touring when overnighting for one maybe two nights but not so practical if you're staying for longer periods due to the internal size.
