This is amazing, huge thanks. I now understand why sometimes when switching into first gear from neutral from a stand still, my BMW RnineT Boxer engine doesn't want to go into gear. Dogs are not alligned and nothing is spinning cus clutch is pulled. Such a nice detailed demonstration 👍

Very informative video. I had an incident on a 2018 CRF250l where I was in 6th gear and tried to upshift (thinking I was in 5th). I timed something incorrectly and there was a loud grinding noise followed by an immediate perceived loss of engine braking power. Also shifting seems lighter now, less positive engagement. For example where as before downshifting from 3rd to 2nd would result in a loud clunk and give strong tactile feedback, now it feels like there is less resistance and it slides into 2nd gear more easily with less of a clunk. Any idea what the issue could be? Dealership tech said the bike is fine but I know for a fact there is reduced engine braking and different feel when shifting after the incident. Thanks

That is hard to say without having the bike to look at. Whenever you're in 6th and you try to go beyond that, the shift drum will physically prevent you / the fork from doing that. You would have to exert a huge amount of force on the shift lever to even have a chance of messing something up (maybe ground a part of the shift fork guide pin away which could explain the softer shifting?). This sounds like an odd issue and warrants further investigation on your part with some form of tear down. I would inspect the condition of the clutch pack and slipper clutch since you were also complaining about engine braking issues (and you have to get to that part anyway on most transmissions before you can access the geartrain), but again, this is almost guess work without having the bike in person to see what you're talking about.

Its The other way, steels spin on the hub and friction plates are on the outside basket

amazing video!, do you have anything explaining false neutrals in between gears? like 4-5th or 5thand 6th?? my bike slips out of gear at low RPMs and finds a neutral between every gear and i cant quite figure out what it is... ( rounded dogs)??? or gear shift selector rod bent? idk..

Apart from being more firm with your shifts to avoid false neutrals / popping out of gear, it could be an issue where the engagement dogs are worn. I wouldn't be surprised if your shift forks are also worn as well. Hard to diagnose issues like this over the internet, so take what I say with some speculation.

15:00 what do you mean here by "Timing your shifts" when the bike is moving output shaft is connected to the chain and thus wheel which i have no control over so what should i do to make sure that the "dogs" don't collide with each other ? or the dog teeth will slide in thier position due to wheel driving the transmision ?

When you're accelerating, the dogs naturally butt-up against one another as torque is being transmitted throughout the transmission. As soon as you let off the throttle / pull in the clutch lever, pressure is taken off the engagement dogs, and it makes it way easier for them to disengage / engage with another gear. As long as you're timing your throttle and clutch action properly, it should shift smoothly into gear. You'll know when you're shifting correctly vs. not; the bike will give you feedback when you're messing up / aren't smooth and consistent. :)

Are the dog ring selectors strong ?? Do they take a beating ?? Cause my bike clunks when shifting to first from neutral

So the selector sleeve/gear setups are fairly robust as long as you are shifting correctly between the gears. There should also have been a heat-treatment process completed from the factory to help the gearbox stand up to regular abuse. As far as why you're bike is clunking when shifting from first to neutral? Hard to say without seeing it in person.

Excellent video, very informative. I have a Kawasaki zrx with 45k miles in mint condition. However third gear is worn and started to pop out. The replacement gear is discontinued, I bought a used transmission with only 25k on it and it has similar wear on the slots where the dogs slide in. I’m at a loss of what to do at thins point. Any advice?

1_BadKZ1000, there are companies out there that will machine the engagement dogs in such a way to where they lock into each other more efficiently (back/undercutting gears). They work very well to prevent that issue from happening in the future. The downside; a bit pricey. I had to do that option on my old ZX6 race bike. Something about them Kawy transmissions...

So technically this gearbox could be scaled up and made to fit a car
