Great video. Excellent production and explanation, even better than the official RE channel. If you do any modifications to your meteor I'd love to see them; baggage options, tyre options (tire for you I guess), etc. I've put an LED bulb in my headlight to replace the standard candle and a bash plate. Thanks, Grahame! I appreciate your feedback and your kind words. I actually did add a windshield to this model - as you may know, the Stellar Black does not come with one. I'm planning on making the mounting video for that soon. As for baggage options, there aren't many right now. Since your reply is pinned to the top of this page, I thought I'd tag my thought here for the benefit of all, since lots of comments get buried to the point of not being seen. There IS an actual drain bolt, located on the lower right front of the crankcase. It's got a large head with a crush washer visible under it. You should only need to check that oil strainer once, to see if it picked up any swarf from the engine manufacturing process. Mine was completely clean at the 300 mile oil change and I won't be doing that messy job again. So instead of buying an o-ring for the strainer, buy a new crush washer for the drain bolt. Even the o-ring on the oil filter does not need to be replaced every change, unless it is broken. Two or even three uses would be quite possible, but you will know if you have a leak soon enough.

@@BackRoadBikerChuck Hitchcock's Motorcycles in England , which hosts a RE forum online, has a large selection of Meteor accessories on its website, including some pannier options. I'll be mounting the Givi brand panniers, ordered from FortNine in Canada and the frames, which had to come from Hitchcock's, as Givi North America hasn't got supply of the frames as yet. Lots of good technical info over on the Meteor forum there too.

Personally I'd say that after you have filled the engine with new oil to the full mark, that you should start the bike and run it for a couple of minutes before switching off and let it sit for a few more minutes before rechecking the oil level, also putting the new filter in a container with fresh oil Prior to the start of the process allows the filter to absorb oil to minimise the need to top up because the filter will absorb a certain amount of oil

Just one point I want to add in this.When you drain oil make sure that no single drop used oil left in the tank. When the used oils flow stop ,tilt your bike in 30 to 45 degree .It helps to drain the last drop of used oil in trey...Well your entire explanation is awesome...

As a Honda trained mechanic back in the 80's (in my dads dealership in the UK) I was very impressed with this, simple easy to understand instructions and good quality production (I'm an AV technician now!), I've just ordered a Meteor and was looking for to some basic pointers as to where everything is regarding maintenance so I'm sure many of us would love to see some more videos if you do any modifications to your meteor!

Picked up my new 350 Meteor today; very pleased so far . Like you the dealer will do the oil changes at main service intervals but I always do at least two intermediate changes on all my bikes, the bike likes it and I find it therapeutic. Keep up the good work. Cheers!

Thanks for the good video; it was well done! Though I've already changed the oil on my Meteor, I was curious to see if there were other things I could learn. BTW, I did my valves too. Why? One, my RE dealer is 45 minutes away; getting from and to the dealer is an issue, especially when you live by yourself as I do. Two, they have a two month wait to get in; that's right, if I were to call right now for an appointment, I'd be waiting two months to get it in for the valve inspection. I don't want to be without my bike that long! Three, dealer techs are paid a flat rate for a job, no matter how long it takes; the more jobs they do in a day, the more $$. That's a recipe for mistakes and cut corners-no, thank you. Four, I like doing the work, because I know it's done RIGHT! After I did my valves, I could feel the difference in how my bike ran. Five, there's just tremendous satisfaction of doing things yourself! Six, it's a good way to save some $$$, an important consideration in these days and times.

@@BackRoadBikerChuck Everybody's oil choice is the best. It's a mug's game to sort the wheat from the chaff in those types of discussions. Just buy a good quality FULL synthetic motorcycle oil with a JASO MA, or a JASO MA2 rating, which is required for wet clutch applications. Some car oils may have that rating as well and would also be fine.

Hi Chuck, I understand that you teach Yoga to people. I'll say, just make your students hear this video. The calm and composure is amazing. Royal Enfield Official KZfaq handle has shared how to change oil on the New 2021 Classic 350 but not on Meteor 350. I'd say, they should put your video as the official one. Loved it.

Just finished my oil change following your excellent video. The only comment I have is, I found the supplied 8mm spanner not a great fit and I felt like I was rounding the nut. I used my own ring spanner and the nuts came off easily. Thanks again for the comprehensive guide.

General practice amongst motorcycle mechanics is to soak the new paper oil filter cartridge in clean oil for a while so that the paper filaments swell up a little to give you instant oil pressure and to make sure any dregs of the old oil don’t fire small particulates through the engine before the filter shuts the door, but otherwise very simple and helpful instructions to those that are having a go for the first time 👍

Thanks for the nicely made video, BRB, and your effort to make the process unintimidating for newbies. That is a messy place for the oil filter to be located. 'Any comment on why Royal Enfield didn't design the oil filter to be where the oil screen is, as it is for most engines, replacing the superfluous screen? 'Good advice about never overfilling the crankcase.

Make sure you don’t over tighten the drain plug or any of the bolts Do you have to start your motor and let it run for a couple minutes before you re-check the oil after you fill it? Your videos are so professional and so easy to follow along! This Video looking at all the oil change components reaffirms my motorcycle purchase - I look At the quality of the oil change components/ design in ascertaining the quality of a motorcycle- passed!! @@julianrose810 None yet. It was recommended to me by the dealership. I've gone about 500 miles on it since my oil change and I haven't noticed any issues.

Synthetic oil would be my preferred oil. However my dealer says no🥴

Royal Enfield can go any road in any conditions if bike can go through Indian roads then it can go through any roads in the World, I have also thunderbird the metor has different chassis and new 350cc engine and thunderbird has old 350cc engine which is not refined at all but Royal Enfield engines are really robust bikes has zero issues regarding engine, in india peoples ride 30-40 years old RE bikes without any maintenance 😅

Also with changing the oil filter, when filling up the oil to max, start up the bike for 2 minutes, stop for two minutes. Check the oil again. The oil level is down because the oil filter will soak up some oil. Add again to near max. Thanks for your videos!

Congratulations on your video, very well done. I have good technical experience and I would just like to make two notes: 1. when reassembling a part with sealing rings (e.g. the oil filter cover) it is good practice to grease them with a little engine oil. 2. all the screws should be tightened with a torque wrench to the torques indicated by the manufacturer, to avoid breaking a casing or the screws themselves. That said, I'm looking forward to get my Meteor ... greetings from Italy!

A GOOD torque wrench is an imperative,, if using one on small bolts like these. That's means don't buy a $50 torque wrench. Good costs more. It is easy to bust off bolts, or strip threads using torque wrenches on small bolts and really, they don't need it. Especially here where you have an o-ring which does the actual sealing, so just snugged up firmly is quite sufficient. I reserve the torque wrench for critical fasteners, like axle bolts and brake and suspension components.

@@megalumpproductions5362 As for the quality of the torque wrench You are absolutely right, in fact I have one from Stahlville that cost me over $ 300. I have my own small amateur workshop and I want to be well equipped. As for the tightening of the various bolts, I am very "picky", in fact after buying the Meteor I got the workshop manual (as well as the user manual) and as a rule I tighten almost all the nuts with the torque wrench, with all the necessary precautions.

Thank you so much for this! Will be changing my oil next week. I notice in a tutorial video by Royal Enfield they appear to change a couple of O-rings on the oil filter cover and around the sump plug. Did you feel the need to change these O-rings? Thanks again, great video.

Thanks for the kind words, Bimble! Yes, I bought a new O-ring with the filter but, when I opened things up and looked at them, the one on my bike looked fine, so I left it. I've had no leaks since I changed my oil, so I'll swap it out on the next oil change. Awesome question!💙🙏🏼

@@BackRoadBikerChuck good to know. Thank you. The oil and filter kit I purchased from a Royal Enfield dealer has come with a "Genuine Royal Enfield" copper sump plug washer. Having not opened anything up yet myself I'm not sure what that's for. Any ideas? Was there one of those in there? Thanks again Chuck.

@@bimble1000 Did you find your answer to this yet? If you look under the engine, at the right front, you will see an actual oil drain bolt, with a crush washer under it. Only need to check and clean the oil strainer on the first drain, There wasn't any swarf in mine at all. It was perfectly clean. Too damn messy a job to be fooling with that every time. So instead of a new 0-ring for the strainer, you need a new crush washer for the drain bolt.

You can also use an aluminum foil turkey pan as a drain pan

I actually did that once on another bike, and when I went to pick it up, it bent and spilled. Not ALL of the oil, but just enough to piss me off. But that could have been operator error! Thanks for sharing!

This is a very clear and concise video. Even though I have changed oil before I shall keep this close at hand. I'm wondering about valve adjustment. Would it be a step too far for my limited abilities with a spanner? I did used to do this years ago on my Kawasaki Z650, but it had a first class workshop manual to follow! - Chris.

Thanks for the kind words, Chris! Well, the meteor tool kit does come with a small spanner wrench, but I believe it's just for adjusting the coil-over shocks. I do work on my own bike for several things, but I'm not a mechanic and I haven't done anything with the valves. I would suggest reaching out to a dealership. I've asked my dealership mechanics several questions about maintenance and they have been happy to explain things over the phone.

Not difficult to do with the proper knowledge on how to set valve clearances. Getting the valve cover off is probably the hardest part of the job, but the rest needs knowledge about how the engine is timed regarding valve positioning for making the adjustments, which are in the thousandths of an inch. Special tools required. Do it wrong and you could damage the engine seriously.

Ideally one should soak (prime) the new oil filter in fresh engine oil before installation. Excellent video, otherwise.

Ideally the oil level shouldn't go over maximum when the engine is hot, so if the engine is cold you definitely want to stop before the maximum line because the oil will expand when hot. As long as the amount of oil you have doesn't fall below the minimum it's good. Since you've changed the oil filter you might want to turn the engine over then decide what the oil level is.

Great video. Very detailed. Do you by chance know how to turn off the service indicator (flashing wrench) After you’ve completed your oil change?

Thanks! I HAVE received instructions on how to turn off the service reminder flashing wrench! I'm going to be doing a video on that next, but until then, here are the instructions I recieved: - turn your bike's key to the ON position - you don't have to start your bike for this - switch your odometer to TRIP B - PRESS AND HOLD the "i" button for 10 seconds - WHILE HOLDING THAT BUTTON IN, turn the key to the OFF position - KEEP HOLDING that button in for 30 seconds - turn your key back to the ON position WHILE STILL HOLDING THAT BUTTON IN - Hold for 10 more seconds, then release. That should turn off the flashing wrench. I have NOT done this yet. I'm going to do it on camera to make the video, so hopefully that works.

Hi Back Road Biker, Thanks for your great how to video. Do you think you can make more walk through / talk through videos like this one please? It would be great to have someone knowledgeable like you to explain how other parts of the maintenance schedule are taken care of. The bike operators manual has a long list of things to inspect, clean and replace. Once the warranty period is over I intend on doing my own maintenance. Your videos would be a great source of information. Yes I agree there are many videos out there, but the ones specifically for the Meteor 350 are either very few in English mainly by RE, or in Indian. The bits from the maintenance schedule that I need help with are: - Evaporative Emission Equipment rubber hoses - Drain the overfill by removing plug (where is this?), - Vent pipe under air filter (what to do with this one?), - Starter relay connections (where is the starter relay). If you can shed some light on how to do this maintenance it would be greatly appreciated.

You might want to download the digital version of the RE Service Manual for the Meteor. You can find it on the Meteor forum over at the RE website hosted by Hitchcock's Motorcycles in England. Free download. It has every detail of maintenance for the entire machine.

Planning to get one soon. How's engine heat during traffic jams? In my area, bad traffic is something to be expected so not a lot of airflow on an air cooled engine.

In first service how much oil need to fill? Dealer said 2 liters but in owners manual recommended is 1,7 to refill and max 2,2 liter dry. Please help.

This video is only 5 months old. I saw the price on your oil filter was $2.99. We are so ripped off in the UK. As of today 25th April 2022, the same oil filter costs from £12 ($15.50) - GRRRRRR!!!!

i add 1 bottle of 350 ml of 'NULON'/ 'ABRO', teflon-engine treatment oil after first 1000 kms,.. every 3 months, for very good engine protection,....good cold starts,..... if you do this,... your engine oil lasts 2.5 times more,...( total quantity of oil+ additive, should not exceed maximum quantity )
