G'day guys, I was sick of the buffeting noice in my helmet that I was getting from the DR650! I try and show a visual prospective but it was not as visual as I thought. I did in the end work out what is going on and how to fix it. Hope you enjoy :-) Cheers... Mark

The best motorcycle fairings ever made to this day was built by Craig Vetter in the 1970's was the Windjammer. No buffeting or wind noise. He designed them in a wind tunnel along with the saddle bags and trunk. If you had those as well you would not get any wind up your back. They were considered ugly but they were designed to move the air behind the bike instead of it coming back around and up your bike. I found a Windjammer, bags, and trunk and fabricated brackets to mount that stuff on my Honda VT600. It one of just a few modern motorcycle's that old 70's touring gear will fit on. I love it!

Superb idea! I will have to try this. My large-screened CB500X gives lots of buffeting and wind noise compared to my completely screenless Z1000. It would be interesting to see if I can diagnose it. Just need to wait for Christmas!

Great video. I have a similar proble but my theory is that the wind comes around the side of the screen. Looks like the kids will miss out on some of their christmas decorations as I'll give your trick a try. Keep up the great work

That's pretty cool, Mark. I had never really thought about the low pressure area behind the windshield, but I've never used a windscreen on a motorcycle so I wasn't aware that they could cause buffeting like that. Good to know!

I noticed in one of your other videos when you were heading along those dirt roads - your microphone sounded louder when your visor was up. Same as iin here.

I have a laminar lip bolted on with rubber grommets so it’s about as high as your windscreen. I got some turbulence but it seems to be right in front of my chest and under my chin but, everything feels nice and smooth it’s just loud as hell when it’s windy. Now here in western Canada we can expect to see 30km winds on a daily basis

To solve my buffeting I removed the screen but left the mounting brackets. No more buffeting and the noise is tremendously reduced!! My last bike was a Kawa 450 which had no screen and no buffeting at any speed which gave me the idea! The Suzuki SV650 also doesnt have buffeting problems or a wind screen!

I think you've hit on something important idea here. Windscreens seem to need a source of air flow from behind the screen. This upward flow would kill the vacuum that causes the turbulence that is sucked over the top edge of the wind screen then hits you in the face.

I went riding just out of kilmore yesterday in that gusty wind on my Dr650 lol was a bit hairy an alot of wind tunnles but she just pushed through it. Was a head wind too.....can't beat pure torque of the DR 💪💪💪💪

You could always try a "laminar lip" to see if that would shoot a high speed jet of air to assist in getting the blast to climb up over your head.....it goes back to aircraft wings to keep the flow attached at high angles of attack and prevent a wing from stalling.....without getting into it deeply, it basically is a small wing (windshield piece) that attaches to the top of the windshield and in front by a small amount - exact placement will need experimenting.....if you try, I hope it works for you as I've seen many used over the years of my riding.....mostly on large windshield touring machines.......best of luck........Ken

+1 for the Laminar lip. Moved the airstream on my Honda cruiser about 8" higher and I love it. The laminar people may even offer a custom windscreen for your bike instead of a velcro attachment like I have.

They use yard on the windscreen of gliders to stay coordinated because standard aviation gauges aren't sensitive enough. This is genius.

I'd personally use something a tad less affected by every little wind disturbance, something like lengths of sewing yarn. Even if you had pretty clean flow, that tensile would still be violent.

dont use the silver type, the y are colour coded , the heavy duty tassles i mean air indicators are pink try them lol doing same with my dual sport and cruiser, could try the bolt on TOP deflectors adjustable(there is a gap to let air through aswell, i just made one up for dual sport bolt on with rubber washer to make gap) and not high, but found as you come more verticle the less height you need, the cruiser bigger screen has more air from below ,like hitting my armpits from below ! never thought of tassles nice vid mate

Best screen I ever had was one screen on top of the other with about an inch between them. The rear screen was about 10 inches and the front screen was about 14 inches and you could adjust the outside screen up and down several inches. I had no buffeting and I looked at least 2 inches over the top of the front shield. It was a "Windbender" on a 1800 Gold Wing. Nothing else came close! I'm 6'1" Note! Give me my Texas 66 sign back, so your the one....

The only aftermarket screens I will buy are those made by Madstad. They are the only ones that truly work. Unfortunately, 1. They have a limited selection of vehicles which they make them for. 2. They don't look great.

Robert Nocera Jr the wind isn’t the problem, it’s the turbulence the windshield is producing is what the problem is. if you haven’t ever experienced it, it’s quite annoying.

Is it caused by the vacuum behind the screen? I had the same on my old Honda, it was horrendous after about 30mph. I tried a screen extension, no better so on my travels I bumped into another biker who had cut two holes in his screen at about 8 inches above the handlebars. It works great he said. So I did mine with a 90mm hole cutter, instantly better as there is no wind trying to fill the vacuum behind the screen. It's not perfect but I can ride with my visor up now.

Great video, thanks. I have the same problem. Husky Terra with stock screen. Though I needed higher screen to stop the buffeting. Made a mock-up to direct air above the visor. It didn’t make any real change. I would have annoying Buffeting around 80k on around and under the helmet and it was annoying and noisy even with ear plugs. When I stood and got clean air it was gone. Went to the lengths like you sticking strands of wool to screen to see air flow (same as in sailing “setting the woolies” to trim the sails). The air stream on outside of screen flowed parallel but centre of screen was sucked down. I loosened the screen an put spacers under it to increase airflow under the screen to combat the vacuum, but there was still turbulence. I kept standing on the pegs and would feel clean air that slowly sit and cop the turbulence. Finally I removed the screen entirely and - it was great. No turbulence and more comfortable at 100 than previously at 70. Bit of a shame, as bike doesn’t quite look as good without the screen. Bit of a shame really. Hope this helps others. CJ

Tech tip for dual sport off-road typical bikes.. on my XR 650 I have installed a windscreen for $25.. Simply install a full face helmet visor up side down on top of your dashboard! Works great and definitely helps without getting into a big ass Wind shield.. check it out on my Facebook page. Robert nocera Jr@ Facebook..... Thanks again mate for your work and message..

A word from (expensive & sorry) experience. This shield is too small (many are, "& on purpose") to be good at anything, but flickin air & other projectiles at your face/head... Better off with now't. (Workin through the same now). Could a "GIVI Airflow" be fitted, somehow ( these work)? & I see you'r a bit of a fabricator & you'v got it.
