Honda CRF300L Rally: Where the dirt ends and road begins, the CRF300L Rally is waiting to bring adventure bike capability to your everyday commute. The nimble design and plentiful low-end power combine with smart features for an ideal transportation solution through busy streets and bumpy trails. The bodywork is inspired by Dakar Rally racebikes, which means it looks as good as it performs. The tall windscreen provides solid protection against the elements. And the long motocross-style seat gives you all-day comfort and allows you to easily move around in the saddle. If you have a dual sport that’s even lighter and more affordable in mind, make sure you check out our honda CRF300L.
Yamaha Tenere 700:
The Yamaha Ténéré 700 is a midsize adventure/dual-sport motorcycle manufactured by Yamaha since 2019. It features a 689 cc (42.0 cu in) parallel-twin engine which powers the motorcycle through a six-speed gearbox and chain drive. Brakes are equipped with rider-switchable (on-off) ABS. The "baby Ténéré" is the latest in a series of dual-sport Yamaha motorcycles named after the Ténéré desert stage of the Dakar Rally in the Sahara. The successor to Yamaha's XT660Z Ténéré was first announced as the T7 concept at the 2016 EICMA with an anticipated production launch in 2018. A refined concept was publicized a year later.
Yamaha announced that delivery of bikes would begin in Europe in July 2019, and only the following year to the USA due to emissions and other regulatory delays. The liquid-cooled 4-stroke 8-valve DOHC engine with crossplane crankshaft was already in use and well reviewed in Yamaha's MT-07 naked and Tracer 700 sport touring bikes.

The fact that you're comparing a 300 cc bike to a 700 cc bike is a huge endorsement to the smaller bike from word one. Even more so when you know the 700 is one of the finest motorcycles available today.

Believe it or not, This comparison is something many people are torn over. Most people can only have one motorcycle and these two are highly sought after. I guarantee this video helps a lot of people out and will get a ton of views in the first few weeks alone.

Riding offroad since nearly 40 years I bought myself a T7. And by far, the best bike i ever owned. Loved every minute riding this bike. Then i got the idea to take part at a dersert rallye in marroc. So i started preparing myself, did lots of training, managed to get faster and faster. I was really happy with myself. I was able to use the huge power of the bike offroad. It was amazing. Until i crashed, finding myself in the gravel, destroyed....just one week before the rallye starts. One year preparation for nothing. No i have to wait for a year until my body is recovered. So i have the time to watch your hole video .......and maybe go for a 300

Great video and loved the intro. Been riding for 50+ years and I’m currently on a HD Pan America. Started in the dirt as a kid and went to the street as an adult and then the big barkaloungers as an old man. The Harley came out with their adventure bike and now I’m back in the dirt. And loving it. I’m giving the 300 rally some serious thought as a second bike just because the big adv bike doesn’t like the sand and mud that’s so prominent here in Florida. It does it, don’t get me wrong, but it’s a lot of bike to pick back up.

I found your review very balanced and informative for anyone considering either motorcycle or any dual sport vs adventure. I’ve a CRF250L and a BMW F850GS. Everything you said is correct. Technical Off-road light is right, therefore the CRF. On road the adventure motorcycle is great. Every motorcycle is a compromise and there is no unicorn.

I have both a 250L Rally and an Africa Twin and I love having options. I've camped and done day trips with each of them and it just depends what kind of mood I'm in and how technical the terrain will be. For longer trips with more highway, I go with the Africa Twin and would use the Tenere if that's what I had.

Great video! I'm leaning towards a Tenere 700 as I've had dirt bikes in the past so something that is more capable on the road would be nice but still able to go poking around up gravel roads that would be beyond a road bike.

Loved this review! Every bit of it. You really covered it all, for both bikes. I retired in 2020, and wanted a bike again, 29 years after I sold my last one, a Suzuki TS250. I read Ghost Rider, that got me interested in Adventure models, particularly the T7, but there were none to be had😢. I wound up getting a new 2019 Africa Twin for the same price though, a good deal, but a heavy monster of a bike. 2-1/2 years, 36,000 miles, and 4 sets of tires later, I do still love the AT, but at 69, and having lost weight and muscle (long COVID), I can no longer pick it up. I only feel the most confident off roading when I have help along, which isn’t all that often, as my friends mostly all still work. So to give me something to toss around, I began looking for a CRF300L Rally, but could only find a non-ABS 300L standard. So I bought it, and have warmed up to it, and it filled the bill for my intentions at a reasonable price. Recently I got to test ride a used Rally, and of course, loved it, but not enough to pay $1800 difference trading in the 300l. Your review really means a lot to me, and it didn’t disappoint in any way. If I could do it all over again, I’d have bought the T7 first, then the Rally. I seem to often wind up with second or third best, but I’ve still had a great time getting back into biking with my two Hondas, and will continue until I am not able. See you out there!!

I don't typically make comments, but both bikes are beautiful. I just happen to think that the Honda rally is the best looking of most motorcycles I have seen these days. I also like the high fender. And I don't mind the squinty eyed headlight of the Honda. I have never ridden either one of these motorcycles, but I bet twisting the throttle on the Yamaha is a lot of fun. I even have a good time on my Honda trail 70, but I also have the DRZ E. Although here in Texas I had to install a cooling fan for the radiator. My trail text speedometer was telling me my engine was about to melt. Thanks for the comparison

I think it really comes down to what you want to do on a motorcycle. Both of these bikes are very capable and worth the price. I own the crf300l myself, but see the advantages of either of these bikes. I do shorter rides and like the lightness of the 300 to whip around off road trails. The fuel mileage is great to. Love the Channel!

That was some good info and perspective nice job man👍 And anyone wondering why you would compare these 2 bikes before the vid probably has a better understanding of why, if they watch the full vid. So many peeps out there want power and comfort for the street riding but also want the agility and offroad performance for the dirt and ya gotta compromise somewhere. So knowing which type of riding you do most plus what you can and can't live with and or handle will help you decide between these 2 bikes, that I agree are probably being cross shopped by a lot of people.

300L owner here. Never had my hands on a T7 but my impression is that the T7 is geared more towards experienced dirt riders. My 300 is powerful enough to get through anything in my way while remaining very forgiving and being light enough to be tossable. I commented to a friend while it was parked that if it fell over I'd be more upset about my helmet sitting on the seat falling than the bike itself. It's geared well for it's power, acceleration is good and it retains enough power in 6th gear to run most highway speed limits. Running wide open I got about 45mpg on the highway at 75mph and 65 mpg when running a more reasonable 60mph. The extended service intervals are what sold me over larger dirt oriented bikes.

Great video.. I have just swapped my t7 for a 300 rally.. previously had a 300l.. swapped that for a ktm excf 350.. in my opinion.. the 300 rally is the best option.. you can't use the extra power most of the time.. I still have the ktm.. but it has limited uses compared to the rally.. and I found the t7.. very top heavy..

I live in Medellin Colombia and the mot scene here is crazy! For the city riding and this is the first real city I have lived in. The population is about the same as Phoenix AZ but in 10% or 15% of the footprint. So highrises everywhere you look. For city riding, I have a Yammie Bolt 950 w/hines pipe so people know I'm there. Here going the wrong way on a one-way street or riding up on the sidewalk is the norm. It's actually a blast once you get used to it. There's an ex-pat riding group I belong to that takes long rides and daily rides to pueblos throughout Colombia. Bcs my bike is street-oriented I just go on the hwy based ones. However, the hwys here are NOT even close to US hwys. Potholes and landslides are everywhere and in the pueblo to control speed they have speed bumps that vary in size. One of the Guys had the rally equivalent and he rode with ease on our last ride. I ended up getting into a fairly bad accident on my bike (labor is super cheap here and my bike is going to cost me $1,000 USD to fix) my ribs on the other hand will take a few more weeks to get better! Sorry for the long story. I need to get myself an off-road bike and looking at both the Rally and Yammy 250 XT. Already have a big bike so not going to even consider the Tenere. Thanks for vid!!!

Good honest review. For the T7. Aftermarket exhaust + Tail Tidy can save weight gained from added crash bars. Catalytic converter delete saves even more. Saving ~16lbs should be doable. The weight and high center of gravity are my biggest gripes for the T7. The Tuareg 660 improves on this. I couldn't find a Tuareg 660 locally new or used when I was in the market and they were out of my price range compared to the T7. T7 takes it in looks and the sound is among my personal all-time favorites. The T7 sounds absolutely wicked which begs to be blipped and ripped. The T7 is a respectable street bike with sleeper like sound and acceleration. It adds to the fun factor. The higher curb weight of the T7 is an advantage for highway in terms of stability/comfort and for a street bike, the weight is on the lower end of the spectrum. The extra power of the T7 is a huge benefit on the street over the CRD300L. In terms of looks. The T7 does a great job of encapsulating a unique aggressive modern/futuristic mix of street and Dakar without going full transformer which I was never a fan of. It's styled along the lines of modern hypercars or an aggressive rally converted Tesla. For a Honda the CRF300L is a bit more aggressive, but I find it a bit safe/boring as is tradition for Honda. Doesn't look bad by any means, but it's not as attractive to me compared to the T7. For me it would come down to price or weight. For a newer rider or someone not needing the extra power. I'd go for the CRF300L. I'd get the CRF300l over a KLR650 but would get a T7 over a KLR650 and pretty much everything besides a Tuareg 660. Anything more than that is out of my price range. The T7 is nearly twice the price of the Honda. It's less bike but it's better value compared to the T7. However the T7 is right behind it in value. In terms of practicality the CRF300L is going to be a more useful all around tool but the added highway comfort of the T7 makes up for it. But the T7 is an absolute beast of a machine and the added performance is a great value on the T7. I'd like to see how the T7 stacks up to the TransAlp. I suspect it would be similar to the T7 vs CRF300L comparison, coming down to use case.

Fun comp. Rally's on order, but I am starting think it won't show up this year. Really want the smaller, lighter bike, but with the range and windscreen. Outside of slower rural roads, I don't anticipate doing any of the more traily-stuff on it, just gravel, non-crazy double and single track. If I can't get the rally before summer riding season -- leaning toward the Tuareg. Not really interested in the little KTM.

Interesting that the new 300 rally is taller than the Tenere. In 2020 when i was looking to get back onto a bike after a 37 year lay-off my dream was the Tenere. As soon as there was one in the nearest Yamaha dealer I was up there to sit on it and that’s where the dream bubble was burst, at 5’6” I could barely touch the tips of my toes, ballerina style on the ground. After the disappointment I was looking for another option and the CRF 250 rally was on a deal so brought one over the phone while working in Holland, which was then delivered when back in the UK at the start of covid, it was tall but there was enough sag for me to get the balls of my feet down. After running it in, i took it back out to Holland and loved going out on it at the weekends, well i did for a month because it was stolen. So now I looked for a replacement, after a 6 hour ride on the CRF to Holland I soon realised that the seat was not ideal for long distance, so I ended up buying a Triumph Tiger900 Rally Pro (I know I could have picked a shorter version GT or even the GT low but hey, you have seen how cool the Rally Pro looks right!! So that was October 2020 and I took it out into Europe where I was working making 800+ mile journeys on numerous occasions. The Rally Pro is ideal for mile crunching and if you have the skill set it is a demon off road too (I don’t have the skill set) Most of my time was spent on the road 99.9%, so on 1st March I pick up a new bike, one that I can flat foot, a Triumph Speedmaster Chrome edition. I know its not adventure, but i hardly went off road when i had one. I will just have to get myself a small capacity dual sport too, to go off road with. Oh and I am sixty so hey I need to be careful yeah! All bikes are great and hey who knows I may get some knobbly tyres on the speedmaster yet.

Very useful and informative video, thank you. I am actually torn between the two bikes so this was a great watch. I live in the French Alps and my preference is definitely more on the technical off road side of the fence, so feel the 300 is probably going to win out for me. Keep up the good work👍

@@MotorcyclesOffroad I think they are definitely comparable because they are possibly the top choice of each category. Even though a huge power difference, both bikes have more off road pedigree for the price than most others in their classes. The big question for me is trying to decide which class my requirements fit. I definitely have a bias to off road ability over highway cruising so the smaller bike possibly makes more sense. Ideally it would be great to try both off road but it’s hard enough in France to even find the Honda let alone test ride one. I test rode the T7 but road only, which doesn’t really give much idea as to how heavy it might feel chucking it around off road. Anyway, your comparison was really great and definitely useful, so thanks again

Great comparison, but I had to own both to see for myself. I love duel sports, Between my brother and I, we have the T7, KLR650, DRZ400S, CRF300L, CRF250L, KLX250, KLX230. I enjoy all of them, the two bikes that stand out after riding them are the T7 and the CRF300L, they both show what gear your in, both have a gas gauge, love the T7 power, and how adjustable the suspension is in the T7. The conclusion riding all of these Moto’s is you need a T7 and a CRF300L. They are completely different but you need both for different reasons.

This if a fair comparison. Personally I would choose the Yamaha since I ride more on-road and it would do any off-roading I do. I will say that fuel injection and a six speed over a carb and five speed doesn't make a real difference to me. I have both and I just don't think one makes enough difference to sway my decision when choosing a bike. Very few carbureted bikes made today anyway. I always thought there wasn't anything wrong with a petcock and having a reserve, but without that I do think a low fuel light is nice. A gear indicator really doesn't matter much to me either. If I try to shift and it doesn't go into another gear I know I'm in either low or high gear. One feature I do like is that the bike settings stay where you set them when you turn to bike off and on. Once I set up the bike I usually never change it again. It's a real pain to have to turn off ABS or traction control every time you shut the bike off. Nice video.

At first I thought it wouldn’t be a good comparison with a 300 and a 700 but it really was. I’ve always wanted one of these Hondas, they seem like great bikes, but I do a lot of highway miles. Currently I’m riding a Moto Guzzi Stelvio. Great bike for my needs, but can be heavy in town. But the weight really helps on the highway at high speeds. Sorry for the rambling. It lays completely flat when on it's side which makes it difficult to pick up. It's great for gravel roads but you need to be an advanced rider to make it off road.

I currently ride a WR450 and CBR1000rr fireblade. I'm looking to get rid of both as I've ridden the fireblade for 95,000 km and I just really don't like the WR. Looking at videos like this where the tenere is $10,000 US kills me as in australia it's $20,000. That makes it almost cheaper to buy from america and ship it out. I'm really wanting a Tenere as I do a heap of highway trips (600 km a week) but still want to go on mini adventures. So thanks for the insight. I was looking a t the Africa twin but I think the Tenere might be the go.
