Motörhead to release Under Cöver in September 2017
Covers compilation to include new version of David Bowie’s “Heroes”, (above)
ONE THING Lemmy Kilmister, Phil Campbell and Mikkey Dee liked to do over their years together in Motörhead, was grab a favourite song by another artist and give it a good old fashioned ‘Motörheading’. To run them through the Motörizer if you will. To rock them, roll them and even give them an extra twist and edge.
In celebration of some of those finest moments, the band will release Under Cöver, a collection of some of their best covers, and a collection which will include the previously unreleased version of David Bowie’s timeless classic “Heroes”. Recorded during the Bad Magic sessions in 2015 by Cameron Webb, and was one of the last songs the band recorded together.
“It’s such a great Bowie song, one of his best, and I could only see great things coming out of it from us, and so it proved to be,” says Phil Campbell, “and Lemmy ended up loving our version.”
“He was very, very proud of it,” says Mikkey Dee, “not only because it turned out so well but because it was fun! Which is what projects like this should be - fun!”
To that ethic, the rest of the album contains loud and proud, raucous and raging Rock ‘N’ Roll takes on the likes of “God Save The Queen” (Sex Pistols), “Cat Scratch Fever” (Ted Nugent), “Rockaway Beach,” (The Ramones), Breaking The Law” (Judas Priest) and “Whiplash” (Metallica) which earned the band a Grammy in 2005 for Best Metal Performance.
“We were happy with them at the time and we’re happy with them now!” affirms Campbell, whilst Dee says, “We should remember that it’s about having some fun with songs that we all loved.”
So there you are. If that doesn’t have you scrambling for your music delivery device, then check your pulse pronto. Or just start scrambling for a copy of Under Cöver immediately. You won’t be sorry.

I'm not gonna lie: I am tearing-up right now. Lemmy left this world on 12/28/2015; David Bowie followed him out the door less than 2 weeks later, on 01/10/2016. 2 legends. Both resting in peace.

If this isn't the 'very best' cover song in the history of rock then my name isn't Sc..tt Old..eld. I've had the absolute pleasure of seeing Bowie live 3 times, and the honor of having dinner with him once whilst touring in Australia with the Physodelic Furs while on tour in the early 80's. This version is nothing short of freaking EPIC. R.I.P. Lemmy you shall be forever so very sorely missed..! 😥. A dead set legend - there's not too many musos who can make such a claim to true fame. Cheers and thanks to All who loved and respected this great and gentle man.

I met Lemmy one night at a strip club in Las Vegas. I walk in the joint and there he was - leaning against the bar looking like a fuckin' rock star. I walk up and ask him if he wants a shot of whisky. He says Jack Daniels. We chat for about 5 minutes then I leave before wearing out my welcome. In general, you should never meet your heroes. But, every once in a while, you meet a good guy that just happens to be a legend. That guy was Lemmy.

I have a friend in So Cal. Jeff, and he met Lemmy once. He told Lemmy that he was his hero, and Lemmy told him nah, be your own hero. Then he asked him what he did for a living, and Jeff told him he installed alarm systems. Lemmy then said" Jeff, when a family is saved from having their home robbed, who are they going to thank? Not me, be your own hero. Jeff was almost ready to quit that job, but Lemmy gave him the kick in the ass to climb the company ladder, until he became part owner of the company. Wise words from Lemmy, a all round great guy.

I never heard this cover before. I guess I wasn’t expecting much being heavy metal and such. Boy was I wrong. The music was spot on. It was a real tribute to the Bowie song. Lemmy’s vocals were fantastic. His toned down enunciation of the words showed a side of him that I never knew existed. This cover should have been a top ten hit. I love it. RIP Lemmy, you’re the man.

There's footage on KZfaq of the only time when they tried playing this cover live. They even restart the song but Lemmy keeps singing the lyrics to Orgasmatron. It's such a sad, heartbreaking thing to see. We shouldn't remember him by those last concerts though. He rocked out for more than 40 years and lived all of his life turned up to 11. He lived, breathed and died doing what he loved, making millions and millions of people happy. There's never gonna be another Lemmy but I'm glad that I managed to exist at the same time as he did..

The original was amazing. This cover does something new and different with it, so its also amazing. I think David Bowie would have absolutely loved this version of his song. In fact, he would have asked to come onstage and sing along with Lemmy. And if that had happened, then it would have opened a hole in the space-time continuum and angels would have poured through, strumming on guitars and hammering out a beat on drums. What a precious gift those tow musicians were. The world is a poorer, quieter place without them in it.

As a Motörhead fan from Iron Horse/Born to Lose... I really struggled with the post-Fast Eddie line up. Its only been the last 18 months where I've gotten old enough & wise enough to appreciate every incarnation of Lemmy's vision.. and I finally get it. Almost in my 60s there comes a clarity. Of how what hes trying to say is so much more than just music.. So. Much. More.
