Motorhome Gas Fridge (Dometic) Fails to Light (FIXED)

Our Hymer had a very common problem with a Dometic gas Fridge.
This is the way I fixed ours in 5 minutes.
Basically the gas supply to the fridge goes via an electrically operated valve. When the vehicle has been stored for a while then it can seize-up, requiring a simple bang to free it up.
Humberto has been stood for 18 months while we set up a new life in South West France.
He is now registered here, insured and has a 2 year "MOT" (Controle Technique).
I fired him up and tested all the services. Everything worked first time ... except the fridge.
I don't know whether this fix will last permanently but at least I know the faulty part if it keeps failing.
Currently it's been performing fine all day on the thermostat, coming on and off without the fault light flickering.
I hope this will help others save time and money, avoiding a potentially expensive garage bill with a simple tap of a hammer.

Thank you,this is exactly what has happened to mine,only difference mine on all the time,I live in the caravan, I changed the bottle when light started flashing, but surprised to find it was half full,changed it anyway, and same thing come on solid for 20 to 30 seconds then click click click,so I know what I'm doing tomorrow, it's 2.30 am Highlands of Scotland and windy!,thank you

You sir, are a star! Had the same issue with an Electrolux 3 way fridge which came with a Motorhome we just bought and it looked like we would have to get an engineer out for £100 plus another £250 for a new regulator. Gave it a tap as you suggested and now it works! I have restarted it many times and it works every time. Thank you so much!

Thanks for sharing, first time off grid and although I didn’t bring my hammer drill tapping with a small adjustable did the trick. You are a star, my beer will stay cold🤣🤣

That was it!!!!!! I was just about to buy a new igniter, which wouldn't have fixed my problem. I put the hammer drill on it and boom, it's on. I spent an awful lots of time trying to figure this out. I did tap the valve with a hammer and it didn't work. Hammer drill is the key! Superb fix!

Both of the vents are for the fridge, lower being the cool air intake, the upper the exhaust vent for the fridge - not the oven.

Interesting, Thank you., I have just changed my gas valve for a new one as I have been having on/off issues for years, So decided to change the valve, Flame sensor and everything works perfectly, I wish I had changed the gas valve years ago or at least brought one to carry around with me. Sometimes it's just peace of mind as you know getting parts when you are on the road and trying to fix things can be a real pain. Welcome to France btw, I too registered my motorhome here, Zero road tax and two year CT's what's not to like 🙂

Agreed. Road tax is antiquated when millions of UK motorists are exempt or illegally avoid it. Annual MOT was from an era of Austin 1100s when 50,000 miles was the same as 200,000 miles today. 2 year CT is much better, especially with a low mileage commercial chassis motorhome.

Also I watched your repair on your headlight, How has that worked out?, any problems with the CT (if it's due yet), I also agree with a comment you made that France was the best place in the world for camping cars, The thought of taking the van back to the UK for a holiday fills me with dread and I will avoid at all costs. I also think they are much more understanding on the CT than the UK MOT, I guess the set up is different than the UK were they are a bit more keen to fail you to get more money and work. Although when I lived in the UK I used local council testing stations which in my view were much better.

@@SlimTortoise Hi. My plexi-glass/Acrylic headlight cover made it through the last CT .... as did the whole Motorhome. The headlight "glass" I made is only conspicuous because it's actually clearer than the original one on the other side. The only real worry is that the (Fiat Ducato) handbrake is very feeble and comes close to a fail every time (on the UK MOT as well). I think it's a known issue and really needs a whole new cable assembly. I just leave it parked in 1st gear.

Sounds good, Our van passed a few months ago, No problems, Although for peace of mind, I changed both front ball joints, (slight play up and down) and tie rod ends and new bushes x4 total cost was around €60, I also adjusted the hand brake, but it's a very easy job on a Sprinter base vehicle.I may change the shocks and brake discs for the next CT, but I keep checking them and they are perfectly ok which does not seem bad as they are the original parts so 21 years old. All the best 🙂

My camper fridge would not work on gas,wrggled all the electrical connectione and sprayed with w*40 ,gave the gas valve a good hiding click click it fired up nice blue fame.thanks for your advice.

Excellent and informative video mate, thank you for sharing your experience with us, we have a similar problem but our fridge doesn't spark when you switch it to gas and no gas comes out, what I did find is a burnt terminal on the igniter burner control device (the grey box) have ordered a new one so hopefully it will be working again soon. Thanks again for your help 👍

This worked on my RMD8555. I’d been cleaning the burner thinking that was the problem. After seeing sparks and no flame I tried tapping the valve…sure enough lit right up and stayed lit.

Mine has stopped working and it has been in constant use. I tapped that valve area with a spanner (which has worked in the past), to no avail. The stove is working but the deep cell battery is flat as parked in the shade and not able to use my generator.

On mine the drill did not work so I removed the gas valve to find that the miniature nut that holds the insulated spade terminal on was corroded underneath and the spring washer rusty. The contact area in minute so it does not take much to loose contact, clean up and check with a AA battery 1.5volts and you can just hear the valve working, PS both ends need fixing. I guess thats why vibration gets it to work one more time.
