This project has no purpose except to have some fun with my friends. I have missed Alex & Dave and meeting in Berlin was fun. We met in the xHain x-hain.de/ and were able to convert that old particle board IKEA sofa to a mad bull ride machine. You can find more info on the custom firmware for the controller here:
github.com/lucysrausch/hoverb...
github.com/EFeru/hoverboard-f...
And this is the online compiler:
pionierland.de/hoverhack/

Nice one, Congrats to you guys. Too bad you were not able to test it in a place with some more space. Interested in learning 0-100 kmh time...

This is so cool. I like the backward movement sound :) but here the real question comes can you drive a sofa without a license in Germany :D

We basically took what's there. If there was a wardrobe instead of the sofa it would be a motorized wardrobe 😂

It's easier to add an ESP32 in front of the hoverboard main controller because: 1. The mainboards are SUUUUPER noisy and the serial interface will at least give you checksums; you also get serial feedback as a bonus. 2. You can use the ESP32 to allow multiple input types without touching mainboard firmware. (I made mine selectable between Crossfire RC protocol and bluetooth Wiimote+Nunchuk on the fly.) 3. Not all nunchuks are created equal, so I use the ESP32 wifi as a configuration server to quickly configure min/max/middle throw of nunchuk and also to adjust expo.

I think the default mode for that firmware is voltage control, which does not relate well to actual rotational speed and gives the "bull ride" result you mentioned. You can set it to use speed (aka velocity) mode which adds a second loop to adjust the voltage based on desired speed. The 'speed' mode is extremely smooth to control and will give you brake as well (can park on slopes), but then you'd probably have to be careful not to brake too quickly. For a human riding application none of the modes are really perfect, imo the ideal situation would be velocity mode but without braking, and then apply braking separately with a second channel. That would give you the closest feel to driving a car. Not sure if that firmware allows it though.

Awesome ! Indeed, I would make up anything to see my friends ! And as Berlin is a very nice town, that's one more reason to go there and stay a little bit longer. I would do that too !

Can you please add a command to clean display in your esp32 VGA out library. As it will be very useful for displaying moving data on screen.
