#Lexus RZ450e
#RX450e
#CoupleCarReview
This is a Motormouth couple car review of the all-new all-electric Lexus RZ 450e crossover. The RZ, Subaru Solterra and the Toyota bZ4X all share the same platform but the RZ has a larger 150 kW front motor, 80 kW for the other two.
The Lexus RZ has a 71.4 kWh battery with up to 354 km/220 miles of EV range, 313 horsepower and Direct 4 AWD. With the larger 20” wheels, you get a little less range, 315 km/196 miles.
The Lexus RZ offers 7.9” of ground clearance and has a sporty exterior design with a floating roof and sharp looking headlights. It comes standard with LED headlamps, LED rear combination lamps, power folding exterior mirrors, roof rails, 18” wheels, available 20”.Standard features include, a 7” multi-information display, a 14” touchscreen, wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto, a 10-speaker audio system, wireless charger, heated steering wheel, heated front seats, Nuluxe interior trim, 8-way power driver and passenger seats and Lexus Safety System + 3.0.
In the US, the base trim also comes standard with ventilated front seats, driver seat memory, a panoramic glass roof, power rear door with kick sensor and a panoramic view monitor.
Here’s the pricing for the Lexus RZ, 450e Signature $64,950 CAD, 450e Luxury $73,550 CAD
450e Executive $80,950 CAD. In the US, 450e Premium $59,650 USD and 450e Luxury $65,150 USD.
The Lexus RZ comes with a 6.6 kWh onboard charger which is weaker than many of its rivals and its DC Fast charging capability is limited to 150 kW connections. With a DC Fast charger, it is capable of an 80% charge in about 30 minutes and with a Level 2 charger about 10 hours. Lexus and Toyota say the RZ and bZ4X will retain 90% of its charge after 10 years. Toyota says, 90% retention rate is world class. Lexus offers a warranty of 4 years or 80,000 km/50,000 miles. In the US, complimentary maintenance is covered for 1 year or 10,000 miles.

Agree with you 100% about the range. The vast majority of people who complain about EVs like these with "too little" range are usually non-EV drivers who don't really understand how little long distance driving most people do. These are the same people who will road trip once every few months, but drive the typical ~30 miles / day commute, and base their entire buying decision on that one road trip they take every few months and think they need 300mi range on a charge. It is really silly that people want huge battery packs when they commute 30mi a day and can plug in at work or at home over night.
@JY-lg6ee
@JY-lg6ee Жыл бұрын
So what you are saying is people need to buy 2 cars, one for daily short commute , and one for a Road Trip ?? A car is a tool , it should not be limited in ina short range, for EV , range means capacity, less range mean you have less electricity for AC, for Climbing a hill, for diving in the cold weather or strong head wind.... It is not just about the Range, by the way , the batter pack is NOT huge, it is heavy, but getting lighter and lighter
@user-tw7ln7ux6n

@@JY-lg6ee Yes it is a tool, and like most tools it has limitations. Are you going to try and build a house, or even a shed, with just a screw driver? probably not. And no, you don't need 2 cars because most people do not road trip as often as they believe in their minds. Yes a shorter range EV will be inconvenient for that road trip - but you will be inconvenienced once every few months for that one road trip you take. People have it in their heads that they road trip every weekend and that's simply not true with *most* people. If you are the exception and you do road trip every weekend then obviously this isn't for you. And yes, you are absolutely right about batteries being HEAVY. Which is why it's even more ridiculous that people demand massive range with more cells and heavier batteries when the vast majority of the time they are short commuting and only using a fraction of all that weight 5 days a week (or more often).

I am picking up a luxury trim RZ this week. $20k under msrp. If people were buying it, it wouldn't have those incredible incentives from Lexus. I am comfortable with the range and I think my all black with the 20" rims is just a beautiful machine. The panoramic roof is a panty dropper.

On most of the EV introduction videos ,I usually fast forward to the range and it is there and then that I skip the entire video. For my basic requirement, they must have 310 miles range to be efficient for some longer distance travel.

First intelligent review I have watched. Everyone keeps on saying the same thing. Poor range, bad charging etc. It's like most of you are bots or you don't have the ability to think for yourselves. I drive 80 miles at most a day. This car will do okay in the interim. Let's say I'm going on a road trip that's 300 miles away. Do you think I'm going to drive for 300 miles without stopping? Exactly, I can get 80 percent charge halfway through my journey. If it's cold I don't think I'll be driving an ev just yet. I suggest people start thinking what they need the car for rather than going super size when you don't really need it. It's a part of our culture we need to do away with. My only gripe is the price and the lack of a few features it should come with. Come on people start thinking for yourselves 😊🙏🏿

For some reason, people have bought into range is the main priority of cost for an EV. I reject that. I do think this Lexus offers a workable range for the way most people use cars. It also has more than enough performance/acceleration. I think it's a Lexus first, or an EV done the Lexus way. And it's a fine vehicle.
@agharuokansirim4935
@agharuokansirim4935 Жыл бұрын
@@benjaminsmith2287 I agree, most people moaning only use about 40 miles a day. And okay they should be worried about that road trip they may or may not take. If the range isn't enough buy a petrol hybrid. This lexus isn't perfect but it isn't bad either. It all depends on what your needs are.

Fantastic review of the Lexus RZ! Glad you choose the white because most reviews have mostly shown the silver or grey and the white also looks great. My favorite part of your review was the discussion about battery life and the info behind the limited range. I would definitely prefer to have this car 5yrs down the road than any other. I see a lot of people online ready to dismiss the range of the RZ as lacking and these are the same folks who's only concern is immediate gratification. If I was spending my $70,000 (luxury model), there isn't another EV on the market I would even consider over this. In the meanwhile, I'll stick with the RX.

Couple of thoughts: 1) I wouldn’t classify this EV as a “road trip” car because of the limit on DC fast charge of 150 kW. Not to mention that your stuck with subpar charging networks you have to use. Compare this to Tesla which has a 250 kW fast charge capability and a much more reliable charging network. 2) For a Lexus I think they haven’t figured our packaging quite yet for their EV. I mean it should be a “premium” EV. And this is where I’m disappointed that Lexus didn’t upgrade the DC fast charing capability. I think they need to differentiate theses Lexus EV more than they are doing today. 3) Zach / Andrea - we know up to date software on an EV is super important, so can you talk about how Toyota / Lexus / (even) Subaru are handling over the air software updates? And frequency of those updates? I know Tesla has that down… with other EV vendors struggling to figure that out.

This was a refreshing video after looking at others where the reviewer couldn't get past the low range. Yes, this vehicle does have lower range than most of it's competitors. Does that matter? If you plan on taking long road trips, I would stay completely away from EVs in gerneral. Gas or hybrid cars are still the most convenient way to go (until solid state gets here). Lexus does have a "Lexus Reserve" program where you can get a free car to use on road trips up to 30 days and three years. If you spend most of your time "running around town" and have a level 2 charger at your residence, this would be an excellent car to consider. I have one of these and think it is the best car I have ever owned. It should be realiable, comfortable, luxurious, fun and have a lot of "bells and whistles"....yes, this checks those boxes for me.

I'm noticing that the front end of many vehicles these days need to be a bit more conservative. Interiors are generally better but the isolated iPad look on touchscreens really needs to be better integrated into the dash. I also like that other, more cutting edge "quasi-head up display" instrument cluster on the Suburu/Toyota. It's futuristic, streamlined, and minimalistic, which I love.

Boy Zach seems pretty salty in this one haha. I get the argument on the battery longevity, I really do, I even think people need to be less focused on range and more focused on having enough charging around. If we didn't have to worry about chargers being broken, slow, or having lines people would worry so much less about range........but we DO have to worry about those things and will for a while so battery longevity or not people are going to look at that range number and cringe.
@benjaminsmith2287
@benjaminsmith2287 Жыл бұрын
I think we have things backwards. I think we should look at moderate sized batteries and moderate range and make the focus on reliable charging everywhere. Otherwise we end up with bigger batteries and a lot of trying to find the solution with faster charging batteries. Battery longevity and reliability should be the goal over range and fast charging should be only occasional.

Thanks for the review. The headliner color does make a difference in the feel of openness, especially on this base Canadian model without a sun/moon roof. Maybe one day they will offer an F-Sport version that will have adjustable suspension, different exterior and interior colors, nicer wheels/brakes, and of course, a bit more power. For me, the reason why I would buy this RZ is because of the brand name. Although it is missing a frunk, there must be a good reason for it. I agree with Zack that the power liftgate should have been standard since this is a Lexus after all. Therefore, I think that next year there should be an additional package available that would bring a power tailgate and sunroof for around $1500. The biggest problem for this model will probably be the availability, as is with most other EVs/none ICE brands.

Hello Canada. I have never seen the point of the powered trunk hatch, but I understand that you like it. In Norway we can get an Executive model for so little extra that I think most people would choose that one over the base trim. I'm glad this will keep the 18" wheels, and in addition you will get right up near the equipment in the Luxury model. And we can get the 11 Kw home charger, and we have got upgraded winter driving and fast charging in cold temp with warming the battery. The battery warmer first came at the UX300e with upgraded 72 Kw battery.

150 would be passable, if not capped at 2 sessions per day and if charging was consistently two thirds of that for a fair portion of the charge curve in cold weather. According to reviewers of the bZ4X AWD (same battery in Europe as the Lexus), cold weather range and charging of the Toyota are a big problem and it is probably similar for the Lexus. Perhaps there will be a software update to improve battery pre-conditioning. I would not however base a purchase decision on an update that may never happen.

They use Alcantara instead of leather in the Luxury models. Both the Nuluxe and Ultrasuede are Vegan friendly. The base 18" wheels and tires get about 10% more range and all season. 220 miles. You can go to range mode which limits electricity use for climate control but gives a little more mileage. The amount of regeneration/charging when lifting the accelerator can be adjusted with the shift paddles. 0-60 times are about 5 seconds which is fun to use when you need it. The instrument cluster is much nicer than the spartan Suburu and Toyota versions. I want the Yoke steering wheel.

Based on how the RX rapidly became Lexus’s best seller, I would expect that this new RZ will sweep the entry level luxury EV market. Lexus driver tend to lean on the conservative side of vehicle market (though not exclusive), where reliability is paramount. They tend to want few surprises when it comes to vehicle maintenance. Both Toyota and, especially Lexus have continually not disappointed this important group of buyers. Tesla, Genesis, Cadillac, Audi, etc. … each have great and interesting products, but when consistent/historical reliability is one’s number one concern (especially with new technologies) … I think Lexus (and Toyota) is remains their safest bet. I really disagree with Toyota’s approach to the range and charging speed on these vehicles. I saw a video where people took a 800km round trip in a Tesla, an Ioniq 5 and a BZ4X. The BZ4X arrived 4 hours behind everybody else because of the slow charging speed. If you like waiting around at the charging stations, go ahead and buy this one. Otherwise wait for Gen 2 when Toyota fixes these shortcomings.

Has it ever been a Toyota that topped the Lexus design/finish? Or is that arrangement between design engineers that they leave the best for Lexus or is it just the more dollars that helps Lexus with better finish? Or am I thinking too much for a Monday 😄

DC fast charging at 150kW is not class leading, but at least better than the 100kW of the AWD Solterra and bZ4x in North America. If capped at 2 fast charging sessions per day, like the Toyota and Subaru, bad choice for road trips. All EVs have slower charging and less range in the cold - I hear it is especially bad in the bZ4x. In a cold climate, unless used almost exclusively for commuting, I'd suggest waiting until real-world cold weather charging and range testing is done before finalizing your purchase.

I own a Lexus and am a fan of the brand. For some people, this car may be a perfect fit. However, for buyers that plan on road trips, especially if charging the Lexus is as poor as the Toyota, for this amount of money, I'd instead go with a Genesis GV60 or GV70, a Cadillac Lyriq or a Model Y. For considerably less money, one might even buy an Audi Q4 (bummer about the heat pump being removed) or a Volvo XC 40 Recharge, which often qualify for Canadian EV rebates.

The longevity thing, I think you forget that the EV is still a very new technology. Even if the battery last 10 years with 90% retention. And in no more than 3 years time, the battery range of most manufacturers would have increase by 10% to 20%. For 5 years, probably 30-50%. So even if there is a 90% retention, most people with this car which is the above middle of the middle class would want more as of today. Not the bottom of the pack. Only my 2 cents. But I really like their recent design language.

This is for a select group of people that can afford a luxury car for running around town. By the time you take off for cold weather and driving at high speeds and the fact that you don’t drive down to 0 range, this won’t go very far. At some point Toyota will make a serious effort at an EV and it will probably be a lot better than this one, but the completion will be getting better too and some of them are way ahead of Toyota, like Hyundai.

Having an NX (that I love but will prolly be trading it in for this) Lexus interface on the 14" screen is OK they could ahve done better IMO- sometimes they make you press too many buttons and they didnt take advantage of the space the screen provides. Also if it doesnt wirelessly connect to your phone- it pops up a No Connect message like every 30 seconds till you turn the car off. Annoying but not a deal breaker- just could have been better- Ive seen better in other cars.

Lexus #1 in dependability Tesla #28 out of 32. Lexus world's better looking exterior and even more with the interior. Could care less about the range because would not take it on a long trip anyway. Would drive our 2023 NX 350 h that gets 40 mpg and takes four minutes to fill up.

14:32 I really don't get this mentality that more money should equal more range and the only reason to consider an EV, or even the main reason to consider one, is range. You don't need that much range if you drive your 30-40 miles a day like most people do. When I spend a lot of money on a car I expect there to be more refinement, quiet, nicer materials, a more premium driving experience. I don't think range should be the determining factor of price. The Tesla Model Y is out of my consideration due to its poor ride and lack of refinement. I don't care if got 1000 miles of range for half the price. It just doesn't make sense to make so much about range. I'm really tired of hearing about range with BEVs. And get smaller tires. 18 inch wheels aren't small but today, there is so much excess in terms of tire size and horsepower, it's ridiculous,. BEVs offer a quieter, smoother operation, more space, and seem to be more crashworthy. They have instant torque. This Lexus needs to be tested with the variable steer by wire version because that's the big innovation Lexus/Toyota is bringing into the EV space. The radiant heat is another. I like the interior. The dash is one of the few that doesn't seem to have a stuck on tablet. It looks modern. The car is understated luxury and modern without being cold in design. If this car has the smooth ride of a Lexus, the build quality, and has better acceleration than the hybrids plus it is smoother and quieter, that's a great reason to buy it and make it worth its money. IMO, unless you do a lot of road trips, range isn't that important. And Lexus is offering people free cars to rent for 3 years when they need to take road trips. btw, I loved your response to this question/statement. People are too range-obsessed about BEVs IMO.

@paulbrown2422 Жыл бұрын
@Benjamin Smith I like your opinion, you have many good points, especially regarding refinement and ride. Regarding range, you are correct that this range is sufficient for most people and most of their driving. What some people (including me) are talking about with range is that if I spend $60,000 US dollars for a different vehicle, I could drive to my mom's place 265 miles away without refueling/recharging. In fact, I could drive there and back with literally 4 minutes of fueling. It is that flexibility which is missing from this vehicle, and therefore limits the usefulness of the vehicle, and makes it distinctly less practical than many other vehicles, including some other battery electric vehicles.

I never saw it before but watching the views on the car from head on...that front panel looks like the car has a big mustache. I won't say whose mustache it reminds me of...but it is a bit off-putting. Get the all black variant...lol. That said...I just need a slightly larger battery for a bit more range and then it would be somewhat appealing.
