My dad bought a new 1984 300zx n/a with 5-speed. I'll never forget the smell of this new car in our garage. Best new car smell ever. I was almost 17 at the time and he used to let me take it out on weekends ( and also every single "hey do you guys need anything from the store? can I take the Z??" ) Fast forward three years and he bought an '87 Turbo and gave me the '84 with 17k miles on it. Happy days.

I got this car about a week ago. It has all extra options including digital dash and 5 speed manual with single turbo. Almost every day I get compliments about the car. I've had many newer cars, 99's mostly and this car is by far the most fun I've ever had driving a car. I absolutely love this vehicle!

Had a ‘84 300zx turbo with the hood scoop...was a headturner in the day...not fast-fast by todays standard...but it was remarkably reliable. Mine could do 0-60 in 7.3 with the 5 speed manual. Also had the voice warning system: “you reff your rites on”. Stored it winters as it was more of a murder weapon than a car in the snow...

I was a young teenager when this car came out. It looked awesome, and visually, a massive advancement over the dated 280z/280zx predecessors. The half-hidden headlights made the car look aggressive and refined at the same time. Kind of amazing that they needed a 3.0L, turbocharged engine, just to get to 200hp.

The manual's troubleshooting section from my 87 Z31 turbo stated: "Excessive engine power: Turbocharger waste-gate failure" or something along those lines. Nissan ran a low boost number so that they would not need an intercooler and BOV. Also, they wanted boost to max out early so that people wouldn't complain about turbo lag.

Something that can't be stated enough on these cars. I know they're not the most sought after car or even the most sought after Z car. It didn't look that much different from the 1982 Camaro and Firebird, IMO. Also, it looked very much like the 1984 Corvette. Many 80s cars looked very similar. I never realized that these cars even existed until many years later because they were so bland. I could recognize the 280ZXT and earlier Z-cars and I could recognize the 300ZXTT, but I never noticed the early 300ZX.

In the 80s people weren't such boring dullards and liked flashy stuff - this was a fairly simple design with just some straight edges. I like the way it looks, but it is boring compared to other cars like a Z28 or a Corvette - and this is right in between those price wise. Still a good looking car, but by 84 standards, it's kinda boring.

Love the TURBO decal on the doors, so 80's lol. And these were probably a lot faster with the manual. Most of the times I've seen say 0-60 in 7.0 to 7.5 seconds, about 15 flat through the quarter mile. Which for 1984 was straight up moving, a Ferrari 308 posted similar times. And I've always wondered why MW gets crap numbers on their acceleration tests. I'm thinking part of it is their test track is slightly uphill. Or that they just post whatever number the car ran and do not calculate in correction factors for humidity, ambient temp, etc like other car magazines do.

Without exaggeration ive had a lot of cars. Most expensive was my BMW 740il back in its time. Probably the fastest car of all my cars throughout my lifetime. This exact model 1984 5 speed turbo was my favorite car ever next to my 740. I've had many Z's in my life. From 260, many 280's and models of them and a few 300's. I just recently got a 90 fairly. Auto no turbo and wrecked but hoping to piece it together someday. My first Z was the 260 when I was 17. It got stolen and recovered behind repair at that time after removing engine trans etc..parts but they also damaged the remainder of the car as if it was in a crash dirty. I didn't have full coverage ins at that time which ins wasn't even a requirement. It would definitely be a check off my bucket list if I were to get this exact model before my passing. God bless and keep an eye on your Z so you won't have to go thru the experience I had

The 15.5 1/4 mile time shows it was decently quick. Autos of the 80s and 90s were generally 1-2 seconds slower 0-60 and even minimal turbo lag (by 80s standards) would cause a lower 0-60 time than expected

My friend bought this car in 84. It had the turbo. I remember he was raving about how fast and powerful it was. He let me drive it and it was pretty slow. You could really feel the weight of the car dragging on the engine. The turbo did not add much help. It was lack luster for sure. Straight line acceleration is not what the 300ZX was about. My 2006 MX5 Miata with its normally aspirated 2.0 engine will easily beat this car to 60. It weighs 2300 lbs and has 160 HP. The ZX weighs 800 lbs more with only 40 more HP. Its a dog when you look at the weight/HP ratio. But not so bad for the time I guess. However years later some other friends were telling me they were driving one in New Mexico at 110 MPH for good length of time and said it felt really good at high speeds and right at home. The low drag probably helped it stick to the road. This was the one of the great interstate cruisers in its day.

Motorweek's test is one of the slowest I've seen for a turbo Z31. Most publications got a 0-60 time of 6.9 to 7.3 seconds, and a 1/4 mile from 14.8 to 15.2, with a much higher trap speed. I'm not sure what the problem is here. Maybe the fact that it has the 4-speed auto, as opposed to the 5-speed manual. These cars weren't intercooled from the factory, and ran very low boost. It's pretty easy to get them up to 260-280 horsepower by adding an intercooler and turning up the boost a few PSI.

Most may not know this, but back when these were new, US Dealerships marketed an optional "Leather & Digital Pkg", which also included factory bronze tinted glass all around. The package added $2,200 to the price of the already expensive car & the two options weren't sold separately. Fact: When you enter $2,200 in the Dollartimes Inflation Calculator & transition that figure to year 2023, the $2,200 in 1984 equals the same as spending $6,446 today. A loaded 300ZX Turbo Coupe stickered for $21,600. That translates to $63,285 in today's dollars. Dealerships wouldn't budge a penny on pricing.

I had an 82 280zx Turbo, and a 84 Mustang GT with the 5.0, 4 barrel with a 5 speed (both). The GT had 225 hp., and would SMOKE my 87 Mustang, the first year with the fuel ingestion.....but I'm telling ya...my Z would eat my Mustang up...and both had performance exhaust and intakes...my Z car, with the 5 speed manual, would eat my girlfriends 85 300 ZX turbo with the auto transmission...if you kept the RPMs up, you'd swear my Z had twice the horsepower it did...but another buddies GNX, with an automatic tranny, is the ONLY auto of that era that, with the positive tractioned...rear end, you'd let off the accelerator BEFORE the car quit roasting the tires, in fear of loosing control it'd be roasting the rubber do furiously!!! Sometimes the rear of the car would start bouncing and it'd freak us out..

Jeff an 84 Mustang had at it's best 200 hp and that would be after Jan1 84 when they changed the cam. The initial 84's had 175 hp just like 83.

moejr1974 I just going off what was claimed!! It said in the owners manual that it supposedly had 225!! I also bought, right off the showroom floor, an 87 LX with the GT package. It supposedly had, 225 also. Course my carburated 84 would eat the 87 up...for some reason. I figured that with the FI, it was a chip issue.
@moejr1974
@moejr1974 7 жыл бұрын
The 87-93 5.0 were 225 hp. 82 was 157 hp 83 and the first half of 84 was 175 and the 84's after 1/1/84 were 200. 85 was 210 and 86 was 200.

Why they testing an automatic? With modern tires and suspension, etc these cars can hang. Mine at 120mph feels smooth and nimble. Its a 5 speed 130k miles. Definitely best bang for buck in old sports car mkt. Remember, it was good enough for Paul Newman who won many a races in a z31 body.

Exactly how reliable are these cars? Can someone daily these, or even take day/weekend trips a couple states over in these, no problem? Or would some of the things like turbos or whatever else that was considered never before seen at that time be way too worn, even if garage kept since new, 1-2 owners & odometer below 100k miles... to pull any of that off?
