This video demonstrates a feature that allows you to take a vector profile and create a toolpath that in effect extrudes that profile along another vector shape. This is ideal for creating moulding profiles, arches, frames etc. The toolpath can use a combination of a flat tool and ballnose to more efficiently rough and finish the shape.

This was very helpful. I would like to try and use this to cut a curved backrest for a chair, but not sure how to set it up.

Hello Nigel thanks for the comment! So glad it was useful and as for using it as a backrest the molding toolpath does not let you project it onto a 3D component (the underlying shape of the backrest) so your best bet is creating something in Aspire.

How would you combine something like a vcarve or laser toolpath onto a moulding?

Hello Peter... thanks for the question. When it comes to using the moulding toolpath, no. Seeing as the toolpath is created from a cross-section and a path, there is no "real" 3D surface to project v-carving or lasering to (we have the option to project these toolpaths onto a 3D surface in their options). Now in saying that you could get a "result" with a laser depending on how deep the moulding is. It may suffer because the distance from the laser to the surface will change the focus of the laser will not. So adding a texture may work well, but adding text may not work as well or look bad. If you are looking to project the VCarvein or laser onto a surface, you will either need to use a premade 3D model or work a bit of trickery using a surface that closely follows your moulding. This last option... your milage may very depending on how close it matches. Of course if you have Aspire you can create a 3D model of your moulding and then you are able to project both the vcarve and laser options onto it. Hope that helps...

@@vectric Thank you - that's what I was thinking too. Although the preview function from the moulding toolpath does a great job of rendering the 3D surface from the cross-section so it would seem that the 3D surface could be derived from the preview somehow. Is there any way to capture the surface from the preview and bring it in as a 3D surface/model?

Just figured out you can ignore the oversize errors and continue with modeling, just can't cut. So I guess I was downsizing for no reason! Haha
