Aaron Tveit has always been a favorite of mine. He so expressive in his singing and can bring you into a moment with just a shift of his eyes. I remember watching "Along the Way" (I think that was the song) years ago, like very early in his carreer, and his emotional shift made me just decided he was the next Broadway God!

omg thank you so so so much for reviewing/analyzing a song from Moulin Rouge, and more specifically an Aaron Tveit performance. I am so so excited for his Tony nomination (FINALLY!) I don't care the circumstances behind it :) And I have been a big Karen Olivo fan since In the Heights and the WSS revival. So yes this was one of the shows I was dying to see and was prepared to book tix for in March....and then we all know what happened :( I really hope it comes back with the OBC bc I need to see Aaron on Bway immediately and this must happen and there is no other way! Yes, I feel like a lot of ppl hate on Aaron....mostly just cuz, and I am not entirely sure why. Bc he has so many fangirls maybe and is not seen to be as interesting and dynamic a performer? I dunno, but I've always been so in awe of his talent. Like you say, I always found his to be one of the purest musical theater voices, with a softness and brightness that was just perfect, plus the ability to act through the singing so evocatively. And his diction has always been *chef's kiss* So I am really glad you enjoyed his performance here - his and Karen's voices really do blend so gorgeously, I think they are a perfect duo. Speaking of Aaron....would love to see you review performances from Next to Normal, either the 2009 Tony performance (when Karen won for Anita in WSS, btw) or perhaps from a bootleg. Love your channel so much!! xx

He sings with such passion and physicality , and he's proven himself as an actor over the years. Karen is a great beauty and really has a spectacular voice. Their duets are heaven and they sing as if their voices are intertwined. Thanks again for your tips also. I work in the music biz, not theater, and always remember your tips in real life as well. I started this video and ten seconds in had a good giggle. Your pronunciation of the french 'l'amour' on screen like the italian 'amore' but without the e means that in french you're actually saying "la mort." Which is 'death.' You said 'Death. Death indeed' like it was so touching -- which is of course darkly hilarious considering the end of this musical.

Marc, I am so very, very happy you reviewed this performance. I don't know if you remember but I had tickets to see MOULIN ROUGE in April but you know what happened. Anyway, Aaron has the Broadway voice I love. He has room at his top voice and it is so focused, free and at times lyrical. I love how Karen responds to him. They are in love! I had spent quite a bit of money to see this and of course I have no regrets. If and when it returns to Broadway, this is a must see for me. Thank you so much! Again, I'll keep requesting you. Would love for you to talk about yourself so that your fans (at least this one) will have a greater connection to who you are. Please don't feel that you might come across as self centered. I've also been a huge fan of Aaron Tveit and Karen Olivo for a long time so it's really exciting to see them onstage together. Also because Karen disappeared for awhile to discover other creative avenues before coming back to the stage so I'm so happy to see her again. Just to point out her name is spelled O-l-i-v-o. I saw two shows on March 11 (JLP and Emojiland). I was in the lobby at the Hirschfeld on Thursday, March 12 at 1:45PM, when ushers came out and handed us papers stating the show was cancelled. However, I am not a fan of some of the changes made to the song itself, especially the ending. I loved the powerful ending on the line "Until my dying day", and this one just felt disappointing, kind of like it just drifted off. Maybe it's a case of which I'd seen first, or maybe it would feel better within the context of the whole show. Hopefully I'll get a chance to see it!

You said "Death, death indeed" at the start. I think you had meant to say "Love, love indeed." :) Vowels matter in French almost as much as they do in singing.

Love the voices and acting. Truly amazing. However, I prefer the way the songs were sing a bit better with Ewan/Nicole. This is one of my favorite musicals and have watched the movie lots of times so maybe I'm just too used to the way the songs were sung in the movie making the stage version sound odd. Regardless, I would still go see this and pay serious money to get up close seats.

Is everyone here gonna hate me for saying that I like the original from the movie better? xD It's not perfect, but that's what makes it perfect in the context, to me. I DO love musical theatre though, I promise! xD

Same here, I only started liking Aaron in Moulin Rouge. I guess, intentionally or not, he over-performed or out-performed his fellow-actors. Now I get it, this time he is matched with a phenomenal singer who's hard to drown by his talent..

That 'never turn your back' rule was largely because you simply could not project your voice well enough before mechanical amplification with that voice heading backwards,, and nobody can read lips that they cannot see those lips. Even Ethel could not have been heard if she is talking or singing through the background scenery to a back wall! The sound has to be going directly toward the audience. So often people are judging the predictable acting choices of bygone eras from clips, without understanding the practical limitations that drove them. Modern amplification allows for a lot more creative use of the stage space, and more realistic and varied acting choices because the microphone is always so close to the mouth wherever you stand or which ever direction your character might face. In this one respect, acting for stage is much easier than it used to be, when everything you did was driven by the need of the audience to hear you.

I love Aaron Tveit, but I have to say my husband and I went to see this show a couple months after it opened and were incredibly disappointed. They made every song just a juke box collage , took lines from characters to give to others, completely changing the point of the scene. The acting, choreo, and vocals were fantastic, but the writing as a whole was chaotic and messy.

Karen just seems so miscast here. Too aggressive for the role

I can’t bring myself to want to see this show because the music is completely different from the film. The film is all I know, so seeing something so completely different just doesn’t spark desire in me. I do love Aaron though, ever since I saw him in the Les Mis film.

Tuning in the duet part is so amazingly perfect with vibrato intensity. Last note, though - one would expect it to be longer and so,a short, last minute, crescendo was needed to boost its "cutting". HIS singing is not as emotionaly involving as HERS. Good SINGING, good tuning but didn't fall from the chair (surely not classical to my opinion but very pop). His eyes where not "loving" enough: too serious. She, on the other hand, is on another level. Thanks for an another spot on video

I know it’s an unpopular opinion but, I prefer the film version. I love Aaron and his voice in this part, not a fan of Karen at all in this role, but the song feels forced and almost over performed. Whereas in the film it felt natural and almost spontaneous. (The same with The Elephant Song - don’t even get me started on that mash up).

Hmm. I do agree, its hard to get the original out of your head when you're so accustomed to it.

Obviously a much larger scope issue than this video, but where is the push on Broadway to cast actors that look like real people? Or is everyone ok with it all being escapism?

I really don't understand the love for this production or these performances. I saw it in 2019 and it was all glitz and glitter and zero substance. Songs shoved in for no good reason. More chemistry between Satine and the Duke than with Christian. Aaron and Karen are both excellent performers, so I dunno what happened with Moulin Rouge, but he was used as little more than a prop to the Satine and Duke show and she was this stromping boss babe take on Satine that made no sense. The music video here is way better than the live performance.
