In this video i am going to discuss moulting in birds of prey. moulting is something all birds of prey go through, and it involves dropping out current feathers and growing new ones through. I discuss feather structure and placement on the wing and tail, the moulting process and moult cycle, how long does the moult take, whats it like having a hawk during the moult, how to deal with the moult and what to do when your hawk moults, what not to do when your hawk moults, can you fly a hawk through the moult, can you hunt through the moult, and can you speed up the moult.

Fantastically put, great information on the moulting of birds, very interesting subject. I find it difficult to leave my hawk during the moult after a hunting season of daily interaction, so basically I don’t. This probably is only possible because we are out 7 days a week hunting and have a good well manned comfortable hawk, so during the moult I take the hawk to fat weight and continue daily to feed from fist or lawn perch, of course the Harris hawk maybe less stressed than others hawks and falcons for sure. That said if I saw stress I would leave to moult without contact, fortunately my hawk just continued to step on to my fist no baiting. I wouldn’t recommend it, as you clearly said, damaging feathers , potentially at risk. Its also good to give nature a chance to have their young without being hunted. Thanks for sharing.

Yes it all depends on how the hawk reacts, some people will find their hawk is fine with it like you and others won’t, just something people have to learn and work out

Very exciting, make sure you keep practicing up until Saturday, it’s to be able to do the knot without even having to think about it once you start adding a bird into the mix!

@@thespaceman903 I’m looking for a raptor care training school . I completed one course already , but want more . My retirement dream is to be hands on with raptors . Respect to falconers , but I can’t go that route at 69 .

Harris hawks can be like that, you need to spend plenty of time manning her, and don’t be hesitant with your hands around her, if she senses any hesitation or fear she will take advantage and foot even more. Try getting something long like a big feather or a pencil or something and touching her feet with it, if she foots and grabs it keep touching it with her, when she stops and ignores it, take it away. This method of training is called negative reinforcement, the negative part being the removal of the thing that’s annoying her by touching her and the reinforcement being when she doesn’t foot and ignores it she’s left alone. Peggy my Harris hawk was vicious with her feet for a while but I kept working on her and now she’s fine about things touching her feet and equipment
