Mount McLoughlin // The Mountain you Ski on your Way to Shasta

Ben and I met a lot of nice people on Mount McLoughlin and almost all of them were on a ski pilgrimage to Mount Shasta. You can see Shasta off in the distance so maybe pre gaming on McLoughlin takes some of the anxiety associated with skiing the unknown away? It could also be that Mount McLoughling gives you an opportunity to break up a long drive. Or maybe backcountry skiers can’t resist such an obvious snow covered slope. We’re drawn to them like ants to a discarded sandwich. It’s definitely not a prestige mountain. Which feels kinda rude to say. There could be someone out there who trained for a decade just to ski Mount McLoughling. And after that fateful day he solemnly hung his skis above the fireplace. Then stepping back to survey his work he put his arm around his long suffering wife and signaled with a subtle nodding that this chapter of his life was over. He had done it. He had conquered Mount McLoughlin.

As an east coast skier that flew out to the west coast to specifically ski this, I feel personally attacked 😂 All jokes aside, we picked this mountain because my friend and host lives less than an hour away in medford and this peak offered a great intro to PNW volcano skiing 101 course for me. Overall I think its underrated and Im glad that you checked this off your list and had a great day out there!

Fantastic video. Back country skiers are the cream of skiers in my opinion. I have seen the terrain they ski in the winter, which sends shivers down my spine.

Brings back memories. I lived in OR for a few years and did all he volcanoes. Surprisingly good skiing really lat in the year, but massive long slog through forests made for long days with not too much vert for the effort.

The animal most likely to chew on shoes is the porcupine. Porcupines have no trouble at all climbing trees.

Long walks through the woods bookending some excellent skiing can sum up the Oregon cascades a lot of the time. The approaches out here can be longer than other people’s whole tours lol. But hey, your legs look amazing at the end of the season.

What is the best time of year to ski this mountain and Shasta. Early June?
@benjaminfox-shapiro4032
@benjaminfox-shapiro4032 23 күн бұрын
We were there late May, if you go earlier you would likely have an easier approach but the snow might not be as settled. Early June would probably go just fine most years if you're willing to walk to reach skiable snow.

Spritz your chewables with windex. Ammonia is a real deterrent if you put your wet mouth on it. If it's your shoes or handlebar grips, or wiring under your truck, hoses in the engine bay, or yummy tires. No one will ever know they've been sprayed with a little ammonia -- until they lick it. A friend's new garden hose was chewed into pieces by raccoons. What's not to like? It was chewy and had a tasty freshwater center. So I patched the two ends together and gave a light spray of windex. Ammonia is a base, wet it's slippery, tastes like soap and burns a bit. Dry it's none of these. I thought she have to do this every couple of weeks. Nope. The raccoons were still working their 'magic' up and down her street, but never touched that garden hose again.
