Mount Mitchell Trail | Strenuous 12-Mile Hike to Highest Peak in Eastern U.S. | North Carolina

In July, my daughter, Joella, and I hiked the tallest peak east of the Mississippi. We summitted Mount Mitchell, a peak in Western North Carolina contained within one of the nation’s first state parks. The hike starts in the Pisgah National Forests and ends within the Mount Mitchell State Park of North Carolina. Not only is Mount Mitchell the highest of all summits in the Eastern United States, it is the fifth most isolated peak in all of North America, almost 1200 miles from another peak of its size. It stands at 6,684 feet and provides great views of the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains. Due to the high elevation and prominence, weather at the top can be severe. The average annual snowfall is 75 inches and winds of up 178 mph have been recorded there. Our late July day, however, brought beautiful, modest summer weather.

Thanks for posting this. We’re hitting it in April. Two suggestions for you: 1). Ultimate Direction ultra runner vests, which we found more comfortable than packs and MUCH lighter & balanced. 2). trekking poles.

I'm sure you will love it. I don't know the plans for your trip, but I'm wondering if you would consider some of the other nearby hikes. We have videos on the top hikes near Boone and Asheville. If you're looking for ideas, you should check them out. Grandfather mountain is a great destination. Hope you have fun!

I just hiked this and it was brutal Coming down I thought was more challenging simply because how fatigued my legs were. Apparently I missed a black bear and her cubs on the trail by 30 minutes

A bear and her cubs, huh? What's funny is that we were not too far from there ourselves. We hiked the Deep Gap Trail (aka Black Mountain Crest) this past weekend. This hike is shorter, but it is rugged and technical - and will wear you out. You have to watch your step 90% of the time. But we love it. Check it out: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Z55gZqeVzLG8pHU.html. Additionally, we understand about fatigue and the hike down. We actually prefer a tough hike up than a tough hike down. We feel there is less risk of injury going up. Thanks for leaving the comment!

Yeah. She needs to make it look a little harder - or people will get the wrong impression about the difficulty of the hike. She just ran her first marathon in November, so she has the endurance. Needless to say, I'm proud of her. Thanks for taking the time to comment.

How long did it take round trip ?

Of course, this depends on your ability. In this video, my daughter and I logged 6.5 hours of moving time but had an additional 45 minutes of rest time and taking in the scenery at the top. I would set aside 7.5+ hours round trip. It's one of the longest, constant uphill climbs in the East. Thanks for your question - and good luck if you decide to tackle this one.
