A ceremony was held this weekend at Mount Rushmore in South Dakota, officially recognizing - for the first time - the contributions of an Italian immigrant, Luigi Del Bianco, who was the memorial's chief carver. Jim Axelrod takes us through the history of how Del Bianco (who died 48 years ago) is receiving this long-delayed honor from the National Park Service.

I think it is VERY unprofessional how the Mount Rushmore tour guide didn't want to "brush up" on her knowledge of Luigi del Bianco. That is YOUR job to accurately inform your visitors about what they came there to learn. It is not your decision to pick and choose what facts or opinions you want to share. The man carved the thing!!

The name, Michael Keropian, should have been mentioned in this new's segment as being the sculptor of the plaque!!

Yes, right or wrong, the news sometimes has to trim the story to make it fit. Sean Herbert did a masterful job as producer and my family has been so fortunate to have the great talent of Michael Keropian who brought our plaque to life two times now: one in Luigi's adopted hometown of Port Chester, New York and now at world famous Mount Rushmore. www.keropiansculpture.com

I doubt if this monument is beloved by the Lakota nation. It insults and desecrates their land.

The Lakota presence insulted the people the came before them also. The tribes have been warring and migrating for thousands of years. Every country on the face of the earth is the result of a conquering people.

@@charleskristiansson1296 What? Are you truly ignorant of history? The Lakota were a forest dwelling people of the north about 500 years ago. They drove southward with warring parties and forced the Omaha peoples out of their lands. You are ignorant and enjoy believing your delusions.

Ronald Reagan should be added to the monument. It is time we recognized someone who was so influential in a more current time frame. If not the monument, one of our currencies should honor Reagan by having his likeness on it. He is the greatest President of my lifetime, and deserves something honoring him for eternity.

The dude is responsible for modern crony-capitalism in government n political parties. He let corporations turn him out. The democrats followed suit with Billy Clinton leading them.

@@ishmaelm1932 No. He wanted government out of the private lives of people. I just finished reading a biography entitled, "True Reagan", and urge you to do so as well. He left office with the highest approval rating of any sitting President EVER, a statistic that remains to this day. He is ranked third as the greatest President EVER by various political pundits from both political parties. He did what he thought was best for the country and led us out of a great RECESSION. Remember Carter leaving us with interest rates of hovering at around 20%, and unemployment at an alarming high. Mortgage rates were at around 12% when he took office. No one could afford to buy a house. Reagan may have made mistakes, but that is what human beings do. We learn by doing, and he always tried to DO, not just sit on his hands and hope that, magically, things would improve and fix themselves without him taking the helm and doing what needed to be done at the time. And the economy rebounded and boomed.

@@TheVerbalVolley The US isn't a country - it's a military industrial complex that can't even provide basic health and education for its citizens.

@@charleskristiansson1296 That is the shame of it, Charles. We CAN provide these things for our country, but government is not doing it's job. Congress currently has free health care for it's members. Let me repeat that: CONGRESS HAS FREE HEALTHCARE FOR ITS MEMBERS. If they were forced to have the same medical coverage as the average citizen, we would have the best healthcare system in the world. Education? Don't get me started. We used to be #1 in terms of education. We are currently #13. We should have free colleges, rather than the current colleges that seem to only exist "for profit". Most all other democracies and republics have free tuition. My biggest gripe is that someone only has to serve in Congress for one term (two years) to qualify for a pension. These are well educated and talented people, who can do ANYTHING they want after being voted out of office or choosing to leave office. They literally have their whole lives ahead of them, but all they have to do is sit back and wait for their six figure retirement checks for only TWO YEARS of work. Ridiculous!
