There's no shortage of amazing Hand built Mountain Biking trails in Vermont, but Mt Peg has to be one of the best kept "MTB secrets". Combined with the fall foliage in peak season this experience is hard to beat.

@@sweatdreamsdjs31 There's a reasonable argument that user created data is what they built the platform on. It might have been nice to offer a free year or two to people who contributed to a certain extent. Newcomers to the app, sure, pay to play. I contributed over the years, and pay, and am basically fine with it. But I understand the argument and sentiment.

Phil, YOUR RANT about Trailforks is warranted. I think it's asinine that they took content that volunteers put years into developing, such as designated loops and other valuable additions, and then just "assumed" the rights to it, and they are now making money off of it. Had I known that was the long range plan, I would have put every bit of my efforts, and encouraged others as well, to use MTB Project instead. It's essentially the same functionality, but they're just slower to get information since Trailforks was bought by PinkBike, and got more prominent advertising. It's a REAL pet peeve of mine, and I think it's flat out wrong. You want to charge for your service, then YOU DO THE LEGWORK, and don't rely on locals to do it for you and then bill for it. I will never contribute one more thing to them, and it's a joke that they only allow you to get a certain footprint for free. Gee...thanks, I have my HOME trails that I already know. Ughh.... /rant
@joeykjeldsen6591
@joeykjeldsen6591 2 жыл бұрын
They made it pay to view once the surge of new mountain bikers using the service meant they had to upgrade their servers and it started costing them lots of money. You are implying that they don’t provide a service for which they should be compensated for developing the program and hosting all the data. Trailforks is a better user experience than MTB project. It’s getting better all the time. That takes money.
@willbros1499
@willbros1499 2 жыл бұрын
@@joeykjeldsen6591 .... Obviously you're entitled to your opinion. I'm crystal clear on the situation. They grew, and needed to up their infrastructure. And...their growth was in large part due to user input and the improved utility it provided. So....as they gained subscribers, and users contributed more to them than the other apps, it just built up a larger number of people to bill, for the same service they got previously for free. What you're saying is the equivalent of you spending hours on end erecting a beautiful piece of art in your town square that brings in tourism dollars to the city. You feel good about it, because you benefit from that influx of tax dollars and revenue that the city gains. You donated your time and materials, and made a contribution to the betterment of the city. Then the following year, the city starts charging for people to view the art, and you don't get a penny of it. Just curious, how many hours did you put into providing content for TrailForks? I understand what you're saying, and if TF just one day decided that they were going to charge for THEIR service, and THEIR content that THEY developed, then that's fine. But to utilize user content that was provided PRIOR to it being a paid service, is something I vehemently disagree with. Many others and I went into it feeling like we were contributing content for visitors coming to our area, in exchange for us utilizing their content when we traveled to other areas. So yeah, I'm a little bitter. But it's cool if you want to pay them...your prerogative, obviously. And your explanation isn't going to influence me into paying, anymore than mine would influence you not to pay. I have a feeling we're coming from different places on this.

Hey Phil love the videos! I don't know if it's the same problem that I was getting on trail forks but the pro option is like a free trial you have to use it for it to go away. So more like a mandatory trial. They're probably trying to entice us into getting pro and paying for it. It is kinda hard to figure out how to use it up though but if you play with it you'll figure it out.
@SkillsWithPhil
@SkillsWithPhil 2 жыл бұрын
I just assumed other features would be part of the "pro" subscription (recording rides, etc) I didn't expect them to put the core functionality of the app behind a paywall. This was the first time i had used it since. 3 dollars a month isn't that unreasonable, but with almost everything becoming subscription services, the costs add up quickly and gets a bit tiresome. I don't fault them for doing this, it's a business model that works obviously and plenty of folks are happy to pay for the services.
@davidvanschubert9093
@davidvanschubert9093 2 жыл бұрын
@@SkillsWithPhil So do you already use pro? Cause the thing that you were seeing is like a mandatory free trial. It goes away in like 7 days or something. I don't know about any of the other features like recording a ride because I never use them but if you do and they changed it so that you have to pay for it now that's kind of annoying. I use trail forks too and it's back to normal for me.

@@SkillsWithPhil It would be interesting to get an update to confirm or not what David is saying in these comments. Are there different levels of paid TF accounts? That would be news to me because I've assumed that there's only one payment plan. I've felt it's worth it because of the convenience of the service they provide, even with the controversy of the trail information being crowd sourced. The work to create code throughout the information revolution has consistently been co-opted by business models, ie, Microsoft, etc. In this case, I hope it's worth it for the carrying costs of the project. Ride happy Phil, love your work. That last dh trail looked especially fun.
