I bought the Mountain Equipment Makalu Gore Tex Waterproof Jacket a year ago for a trip to the Cairngorms NP so now I feel it’s about time to share my honest thoughts on it after using it for a while.
ME state this jacket is a highly protective GORE-TEX jacket and is ideal for Mountaineering, Mountain Walking & Trekking.
In this video I will be going through some bits I did like and didn’t like - as well as my thoughts on it.

This is a very thorough and helpful review. I bought a Goretex rain jacket a couple of summers ago that has some of the features of the Makalu, but this jacket excels. If I need a new rain jacket in future the Makalu will be on my radar.

It's better to have sleeves that are a bit too long than too short. Those longer sleeves are to keep your hands warm! Nice review though. John from MI USA

Only slightly on the lower arms and around the neck area when I didn't have it fully closed during heavy rain. I haven't been in torrential rain for more than a few hours in it though, I have had it on for 3-4 hours of light to medium rain with out any problems. Very heavy rain for 1-2 hours at most without major issues. I have yet to wear it for a whole day in heavy rain.

Interesting, thanks Mary, but does it keep you dry in heavy rain wearing a rucksack ? I actually like sleeves that can cover my hands, so being able to walk around muffled up like a handless monster, is a plus for me. A lot of manufacturers are breaking the law, claiming their jackets are waterproof. I'm almost at the end of the road with waterproof jackets. Nothing works. I've used Berghus Paclite (Gore-Tex) not sufficiently breathable and I don't sweat much. Paramo Analogy - not sufficiently waterproof, unless reproofed daily. Frogg Toggs - fragile, tore on first outing The pressure from rucksack straps seems to destroy the hydrostatic head, so these parts of the jacket really should have plastic bag like waterproofness

I have worn it in very heavy rain for a couple of hours whilst wearing a small day pack and it held up well although slight wetness on the lower arms and around the neck area occurred. I didn't have it fully closed at the neck and was wearing a buff which did soak up the rain a little and I was wearing gloves which I think was the cause of the moisture being dragged up through the lower arms. I haven't worn it for a whole day in torrential rain yet but I have had it on for multiple half days in light to medium rain with no issues. I am yet to see the effects of the jacket losing it's protective coating due to a backpack - but as you can tell the jacket is still in very good condition as I haven't used it enough with a pack to see if it will stand the test of time. I waited a year to film this video for this very reason - but if I waited much longer I thought the jacket would be update/replaced with another model.

Mary good morning, maybe one day in a while you will come and visit the Bandeira Peak between MG and ES. See the photos that climbers took from the summit. ⛺️ amarelinha 😜 Ah! AAAAAA As Fronteiras with Rio de Janeiro, Mirante Mangabeiras. Yes Mary, Man learned other ways to fly. Yeah Mary, Pilots from Minas Gerais use paragliding in Serra da Moeda, 1500m. But, It's not as cold as this environment you're in 🤔 Rio It is the closest coastline to Belo Horizonte. Oh, my God, your nose must be cold. Nice Mary jacket 🌳🌳🌳 __ Mary bom dia, quem sabe um dia em algum tempo você venha conhecer o pico da Bandeira entre MG e ES. Veja as fotos que os montanhistas fizeram do cume.
