In this video, we venture off into Big Bend National Park. We stayed there for two nights, once at Ernst Tanaja, and then at McKinney Spring, both off of Old Ore Road! We hiked the South Rim Trail, and also attempted the Black Gap Road in our Bronco.
The Mountain Lion attacking the deer had to have been one of the craziest experiences of our lives.
We loved the park though, and will absolutely return in the future!

Wow, Didn't realize Big Bend was that freaking beautiful. What a wild experience. Even seeing a cougar is rare, but witnessing a kill is astonishing.

So two things were spotted in the wild on your trip: a mountain lion... and Hiker Trailer!!! Holy Moly! 40 years of camping and hiking and I've never seen anything like that. AND YOU GOT IT ON CAMERA!!! Pretty cool way to meet you. Safe travels! (Full disclosure, a fellow Hiker Trailer friend of mine spotted your trailer and sent the link). :-)

I held my breath while you're directing the driver over the rough terrain. I felt so sorry about the deer being killed right in front of you. I joined. I like going on adventures that other people take. I cannot wait to see the other videos you have posted.

Great video and nice catch on the mountain lion kill. Unfortunately looks like too many vehicles that shouldn't be on the trail have gone over the main black gap obstacle. It's so filled in with rocks from stacking a Subaru could make it.

Yup those are my old stomping grounds. In fact I especially remember the stair steps on Black Gap Road at 25:00 in your video. My Taco remembers it too because my IFS frame horns were “reshaped” by those particular rocks.

Hiker is a good little trailer. If I am seeing it correctly you have a standard type ball hitch. Speaking from experience, if you’re going to traverse rough roads with a trailer then you want a hitch type that has more articulation - else something will soon get bent.
@TheScenicRoutes
@TheScenicRoutes 2 жыл бұрын
We actually have an articulating hitch! It’s cylindrical with a hole through the middle for off roading. Forgive me, I forget what it’s actually called!

Hey there, love your videos! I’ve watched quite a few of them! We are happy with it. It’s a little cramped with two people and two dogs (queen sized bed inside) but overall it’s capability makes up for it!

Amazing. Many years ago on a hunting trip I was in a stand and a rabbit came out and a fox chased down and killed the rabbit right in front of the stand. Ended the Deer hunt but was the most amazing thing I have ever seen in the wild.

Speaking of amazing related to foxes, I was on lonely traffic free paved country road in Sonora Mexico, maybe 10 to 12 years ago looking for snakes. It was after sunset and I think I stopped for a rattlesnake. After looking at it, I was admiring how warm and pleasant it was with the sounds of creatures. In the low light, I could see something up the road coming towards me. I was standing in the road and it looked like a small dog like animal. It was oblivious to me and kept coming. It seemed to be a fox and was going to just walk past me within feet. When it was less than 10 feet away, it stopped, dropped a rabbit that was in its mouth, then picked it up again and continued on. I got two flash photos that did not seem to bother it at all. I don't think the fox even looked at me.

The humans most definitely cost him or her its life. They were making so much noise and distractions the deer didn’t have a chance.

@bs1820, it’s nature, and natural selection. No fault of the humans, the lion was just that good at what it does and got its kill.

To think if the deer hadn't been distracted by the multiple parties of noisy, smelly humans, if the humans had alerted the deer to the puma by making _any alert/warning sounds_ like any intelligent animal would have, the deer wouldn't have died at the moment it did. So, really, thank the hikers for aiding the puma in his/her kill. Don't give pay any lip service to "not interfering with nature", either. Their human presence there 100% interfered, just to the puma's advantage and not the deer's.

IKR. I would have tried to distract the lion to save the deer. Fully armed of course.

Mountain lion has to eat and this is his grocery store. Sometimes things work out (whether aided by humans or not) and sometimes they don't. That's life, and death.

Whether or not the humans distracted the deer, the predator needs to survive too.

When I went to Big Bend in the early 70's regularly, we called the paved road north east of the park the "Black Gap Road". It led to the La Linda river crossing bridge that one time I found wide open so I crossed and explored some of that part of Mexico on dirt roads. I wonder if the one you were on existed back then. Nice car! I saw a mountain lion back then (maybe 1969) on the NW side on the flats near the Chisos Mts. It walked across the road in front of me while on a dirt road at night.
