These are magnificent animals. Sightings of them used to be almost unheard of, but as humans have encroached on their territory, they are no longer rate. My mother, who would be 101 years old this year, spent over fifty years hiking in the wilderness of California, and never encountered one. In the last fifteen years four people I know encountered them within a radius of 25 km surrounding San Francisco

I grew up in Marin County north of San Francisco, half the county is real protected land, and on one particular trail intersection; there was a mountain lion warning sign that made me afraid of running into them at night, but also begin my admiration for them on top of an assembly from grade school were two captive mountain lions were brought before my class. Unless Jaguars proliferate across the southwest again, or the wolf packs return, which is thankfully happening in some areas, mountain lions love to reign as resident Apex predators with deer being their favorite food to hunt.

Mountain lions in North America can weigh up 250 lbs. It is a very powerful predator. I don't know why it's not considered big. Bobcats, mountain lions, jaguars, ocelots, jaguarundi are all native to America and should be protected. Human encroachment is the problem.

I think that in English you call big cat the species belonging to the panthera genus like the lion, the tiger, the jaguar and the leopard. They are panthers, in the broad sense. The cougar, like the cheetah (which is closest to it), which can sometimes be bigger than some jaguars and leopards, do not belong to the panthera genus.

"The United States was a primitive, barbaric empire that existed for only a few hundred years between approximately the 18th and 21st centuries. Known by rival nations for their brutally ignorant cruelty, even toward the end of the empire's reign of political and environmental terror, nearly half of the general population continued to believe that the Earth was flat, and created in exactly seven human days, by a sky giant who hated gay people and rewarded humans for destroying the rest of the sky giant's creation."

This is a beautiful cat. A killing machine. I think we should limit our hunts, and let the Mountain Cats take the deer. If they are killing cattle, then we need to have ranchers hunt, but also use "sheep dogs" to protect their herds. Just my opinion.

Killing pumas and many other wild cats in any form except self-defence should be seriously punished. Hunting by those stupid men with packs of dogs and rifles should be forbidden, punished even by prison - 3-5 years for 1 puma or bobcat etc in USA! Hunters for me are primitive people and simply barbarians, with complexes. The feel strong shooting strong cat. Let they stand 1 :1 with boxer, karatekas etc. or e.g. me ! The will be taught quickly what "strong men" they are, crying as child not to beat them. Wild cats are endangered - most species of them! There are only 270-300 Syberian Tigers on the whole Earth - due to stupid, cruel hunters!!! I would never shake hands with any hunter! @Rez bird - if you afraid cats so buy fence and don't kill cats which are worth more for me than you.

I can guarantee you, there are no people on earth who care more about conservation than hunters. The money they pay for tags and licenses goes directly towards the forest service and conservation as a whole. Mountain lions are a species of least concern.

I don't hunt; but I don't condemn hunting either. I have seen what happens when a specific animal such as deer are protected and have absolutely no predators. Their population booms until conflicts with humans is unavoidable. They can become plagued by disease(s) that can quickly spread through a dense population. In the case of the deer that I observed, deer-car collisions were almost a daily occurrence; often more than one accident in a day. They get injured but don't die and end up hobbling around with a broken leg dangling like a voodoo doll hanging on a car's rearview mirror. Due to increased population, their nutrition suffers as there are too many animals eating the vegetation, which isn't sufficient for the number of them in the area. Cougars are a bit different, but still suffer from over population. Just like deer or any other animal that can't get enough to eat, cougars will come in to areas populated by humans. Restaurant dumpsters, local wildlife and even pets become a meal for these cats. Just like any other animal that over populates, they become prone to disease and injury. As much as I dislike any animal being hunted; I understand the need for hunting. Humans have reduced the numbers of predators (some of which pray on other predators), so animal populations tend to grow unchecked. In cases where wildlife become too numerous, hunting is a necessary evil.
