Wyoming has multiple species of animals to hunt during the winter months. Mountain Lion hunting is sometimes controversial and has seen many regulation changes throughout the US. We were given the opportunity to accompany a houndsmen during the mountain lion season. Learning about management, hunting, and cooking of the species is the overall goal. We spoke with Wyoming Game & Fish about Lion management and recruited Ryan Callaghan from MeatEater to guide us in cooking a few meals.

One minute you are an apex predator chasing down deer and elk the next minute you are a lettuce wrap. Gotta love the circle of life.

First thing I thought when reading the title was the .240 Weatherby would be an excellent cartridge for game of that weight and build.

Sweet 👍, I have a 240 Weatherby Mark V deluxe and love it!! I load H4831, with 100 gr nosler partion bullet. My favorite pronghorn rifle, plus, my long range rifle I used in Africa for springbok and Impala and other plains game.

I'm on the fence , 240 or 257 Weatherby ??? If you could do it all over , which would you buy and why ??? I live in Va . , we have big black bears and some critters people scoff at , but I've seen them twice personally , and they are no joking matter. 240 I'm told isn't much more than a 243 and the 257 , people say is just a 25-06 . Advice ??

@@thebigfellar7178 The 257 can be loaded a little heavier with up to a 130gr bullet, while the 240 has Max of 100 GR bullet. I love my 240 for deer, pronghorn and lighter plains game in Africa such as Impala, warthog and springbok. The 257 is a great deer rifle too but for larger game as black bear and even elk, I use my 270 weatherby rifle, only because I am getting older and injuries from my younger days are catching up to me. The 270 weatherby has very little recoil and is a great all around load, much than the 270 Winchester. I do prefer my 340 and 300 weatherby rifles for larger game but the 270 weatherby is fantastic. Also I am a fan of the 7mm rifles. To answer your question, I would still prefer my faithful 240 weatherby. If I could have only 1 weatherby rifle, my choice would be the 270 weatherby and I shoot 150 gr Barnes TSX bullets from mine that I load myself. If you are set on either the 240 or 257, I would choose the 257 only because it can shoot a heavier bullet.

@@thebigfellar7178 I would choose the 257 weatherby if I could only have one. Reason being, it's a great caliber for small to medium game. It's very accurate and flat shooting. My friend owns a 257 weatherby and I load all of his ammo for him. A great all around load is the 115 GR Barnes TSX bullet. Remember, bullet placement and bullet construction are the key to one shot, quick kills. You can never go wrong with the 257 Weatherby Magnum. If I could do it again, I would choose the 257 over the 240 because of the ability to shoot a heavier bullet. It was Roy Weatherby's favorite caliber also.

Anyone who thinks hound hunting isn't sporting never felt the excitement of hearing the dogs run. The thrill is awesome when the dogs blow up on a track. Not ALL quarry is caught, not all quarry is harvested. In reality only a small percentage. If not for hound hunters there would be more attacks on humans ( ask California department of Fish and Game ), or any state where dog hunting is banned. No fear of humans means more human confrontations. Don't listen to the hype, hound hunting is ethical when lawfully allowed.

@@BigHarryBalzac I always took my Kids hunting. Now they take me. My boy is a accomplished hound hunter, runs bear And cats . I can thank hunting for keeping them out of trouble. 5mins from the house and he was deer or elk hunting. It's so much fun to watch his skill with the dogs. Who knows what would have happened had I not taken him hunting I shudder to think!

@@The0Matador0 most school shooters are mentally disturbed, California has cougars watching kids in the playgrounds, attacking joggers etc. Then the Fish & Game dept has to call in houndsmen to track down and kill the animal. A dead joggers children are orphaned and disgusted people like you donate to the dead Cougars orphaned Cubs. Could have been avoided with sound game management by factual study's rather than Bay Area liberal voters, or bleeding heart bunny huggers!

It's alot more work, time and energy than about anything else. elk or deer are easy compared to what Ben Rogers has put into this cat hunting it's hard work they don't come easy and it's about the most natural respectable way to hunt these creatures nothing unsporting about hound hunting at all you would have to go on a hunt to appreciate what goes on here
