Really enjoy watching him work, both here and on the History Channel. Unfortunately, I have been unable to find any videos of him building either his for forge or his bellows. Forge seems to be clay over (fire?)brick. Blower seems to be a variation of a Japanese bidirectional bellows. Would be very interested in info on the forge.

he is making what the Japanese call tamahagene, steel made traditionally from either iron sands or iron ore. It is very difficult to do, and the steel that results is at best a 1040 or so carbon steel, but you know what? A knife with a 1040 steel blade will do everything a knife should do, and will last you your entire life if you take care of it and do not abuse it. I think this is very cool
@JustinTopp
@JustinTopp 4 жыл бұрын
It would’ve produced much higher carbon than 1040 it all depends on how long it could soak carbon in from charcoal in the bloom furnace among other things

The work it takes to make your own steel versus buying some blanks is not even close to being worth it. High carbon steel blanks are not that expensive, and will allow you to create many, many more knives to be sold versus the time wasted to create your own steel. Still fun to watch though, and rewarding to watch steel being created from ore taken from the mountain.

Some would ask why he is putting an ammo can full of oil on top of the fire. This is to heat up the oil, because if the steel is too hot and the oil is too cold, the steel can't take the dramatic change in temperature and literally crack.
@WinterXI
@WinterXI 4 жыл бұрын
naw i forgot the name for it but if the oil is too cold it causes a steam pocket between the steel and oil and doesn't actually quench it as fast as warm oil would
@ernestsheffield9976
@ernestsheffield9976 4 жыл бұрын
@@WinterXI It's called vapor jacket, and when oil quenching it is less of an issue. Agitating the oil during quenching pretty much alleviates the issue. What was said above is somewhat correct. Some of the reason why certain oils are heated is that they actually cool the steel faster when they are more viscous.

Hello History, I was scrolling through videos and I came across one video. Specifically your strongest man video in which he lifts a 400 something bag with ease. However, I couldn’t watch it due to it being disabled in my nation domain of the United Kingdom. I have come here to press this query as to why this may be? Please do explain
@ethanstang9941

The reason why is that the UK government deems certain videos as dangerous content and makes it so you simply can't watch it.
