Despite the bad weather forecast, I was keen to get back to the Brecon Beacons, so I packed my Hilleberg Soulo and headed for the top of the famous "horseshoe" and looked for somewhere quiet to hunker down out of the wind and rain.
I bought a couple of new bits of kit for this camp, with my favourite being the Sea To Summit Collapsible X Bowl (in XL size). I've added a link to that bowl down below, plus links to the Flextail kit I mention in this video along with other items I used.
Thanks for watching, and let me know in the comments if you have any questions.
James.

Hi James, sorry I've not kept up with your videos, but I hope you can understand 😊. Another great video to watch and I promise once I get a little better I'll be more active again, I'll also catch up eventually with the vids you've uploaded. Saying that, and as I said a cool watch and I'll see you on your next adventure ✌️ 🤙 🤟

Very pleased you sorted the bottle out. Definitely no danger of the Nalgene leaking! Though I still think a bladder with a cap is an even better idea - compacts to nothing, and softer to bag in a back. 😁 Lovely video as always!

Yeah I'm glad you called me out for that one - lazy on my part! I always take a 500 ml bottle of water anyway (rather than having to mess about syphoning water into my cook pot from the water bladder in my rucksack), so the 500 ml Nalgene bottle is perfect for me. Cheers Ste! 🤠

Thanks Pete. Too right - layers don't have to be expensive to be effective. James 2 is a royal nuisance 😏 I recently discussed pack weights with someone else. I'm aware that some people state their pack weight without including food, water, and many other items. My stated pack weights include absolutely everything - food, water, beer, all clothes and all of my camera gear (including drone and tripods when applicable). I'd be a lightweight if I didn't film my trips! 😆 Thanks for giving it a watch 🙏🏻 James.

A very relaxing video. I'll be picking up one of those Flextail light covers. It makes the tent look very cosy especially with the yellow inner. I noticed you kept the inner door open at night here. Was that just for filming or do you feel this is a viable thing to do with this tent? I'm pondering the Soulo but I'm a little nervous it might feel a tad claustrophobic all sealed up.
@joinmeoutdoors
@joinmeoutdoors 3 ай бұрын
Yeah I really like that softened light quality with the lampshade attached. I generally shut my inner tent doors to keep any creepy crawlies out. I may unzip the top portion to help with ventilation, and/or unzip the solid skin on the inner door to reveal the mesh skin for better ventilation. I sometimes take the Soulo because it feels nice and roomy compared to my more compact Terra Nova Southern Cross 1. I'm aware that some people find the Soulo cramped though, so it's down to personal preference really! 😊

Very good James, full of lots of 'useful down to earth hints & tips' for someone starting out like myself... Got to say you make it all look so calm & easy - your experience certainly shines through. I have one question regards water - how much would you normally carry for an overnighter if you weren't expect to do any in field filtration from streams or the like? Did you filter on this hike or was it all carry in? Thanks again & keep up the great work - John
@joinmeoutdoors
@joinmeoutdoors Жыл бұрын
Thanks John, and I'm glad there were some useful bits in there for you. I actually did a bit of chat about water quantities for this one, but edited it out as it was a bit waffly and the video was already a bit long. I generally allow roughly 100 ml of water per mile of walking, plus whatever water I need for cooking and drinking at camp. On this trip I took 2 litres in total, and didn't collect any water en route. Cheers, James.

As with a lot of these things, water consumption can vary significantly depending on the individual, on the weather (hot day = more water) and on the terrain (more climbing = more water), so it's best to aim high for your first few outings, and then steadily reduce the amount of water you carry as you get a feel for the amount you get through 👍

As you mention in your video you’ve been out enough to know what you need to feel comfortably warm. I do generally find in winter I don’t want to be outside of my tent for long (at all once the tent is up) and it is amazing once you get in your bag how quickly can shed layers. Do those pumps work on nemo tensor pads? I’ve resisted buying one long enough now I think.
@joinmeoutdoors
@joinmeoutdoors Жыл бұрын
@@richardwaudby7338 It does feel good to zip your outer door shut and then zip yourself into a nice warm sleeping bag in winter! Quite the opposite in summer. I'm afraid I don't have a Nemo Tensor, so can't say definitively if any of the Flextail adaptors would fit it. It comes with quite a lot of adaptors, but you'd want to be sure before you ordered one. Sorry, that's not much help!

@@richardwaudby7338 Hi Richard. I've asked my Instagram followers about using the Tiny Pump 2X on a Nemo Tensor. One of them has a Tensor and has a Flextail pump on the way, so hopefully he can let me know the outcome 👍 James.
