14 Towbar Bike Carriers in comparison for eBikes and eMTBs. When travelling with E-Bikes weighing 24-26 kg, there are many factors to consider to ensure that transport is truly safe. Towbar bike carriers usually have a load capacity of about 60 kg, so they can accommodate 2 ebikes.

The 'towbar load' refers to the maximum weight that the towbar of the vehicle can carry. This includes the weight of the bike carrier itself plus the weight of the bicycles to be transported. For example, if the towbar support load is 50 kg and the bike carrier weighs 15 kg, then the total weight of the bicycles that can be transported should not exceed 35 kg (50 kg - 15 kg = 35 kg). So be sure you know the maximum weight allowed by your tow bar. On ebikes, but especially on eMTBs, the wheelbase should be at least 1300 mm, in order to accommodate wheels up to 29". The wheelbase is the distance between the wheels of the bike measured from their wheel centres. A well-known German-language MTB magazine tested 14 towbar bike carriers, discovering their pros and cons and finally deciding on the winner.
The test covered, handling, practicality of mounting the bikes, anti-theft locking systems and finally they carried out an off-road driving test, on a slalom course on the road, simulating a sharp turn at 60 km/h and performing emergency braking at 100 km/h.
