After several keyword searches, this video showed up but I had to scroll down to it. Out of a gazillion tutorials that are woodworking related, this topic was hard to find. There are many that cover distressing, surfacing, and, of course, using this type of lumber but not much about preparing it for use. Turns out that this video is a perfect fit for my questions. Gave me all the information I knew I needed and then some I didn't know I needed (bugs, for instance). I appreciate the information and the effort involved in sharing it.

Absolutely amazing video! Very clear directions and very thorough. You even covered several types of solutions for each topic, thats amazing! Most people don't put in the effort. Its great that you gave the viewers variety of options. Like diy vs. Professional solutions. Definitely worth a sub and a like 👍

Spray it down with 30 second house wash. It’s just high concentration bleach, soap. Light scrub and spray off with hose. You can do multiple boards at a time. Do it on the ground with a long handled floor brush. You can clean up a fence this way, too.

Great video! Thank you. FYI . Common misconception. Dimensional lumber is smaller than the stated size because of planing, not kiln drying. The size is measured before planing.

6:24 Did this previously with only water and a watering can + A few big barrels of rain water. Took me a couple of hours to clean the deck off. It went pretty well even without soup for those out there looking for even cheaper options. Remember if you have the option to move the wood around try to rotate were you are cleaning it so it doesn't get too wet and muddy on the ground where you are doing the cleaning, and have a great day.

Maybe I missed this, but do you cover inspection at all? I am trying to use some lovely old growth douglas fir lumber (true 2x13.5") for building a new garage, but my building inspector (in Rhode Island) says all reclaimed lumber has to be inspected and stamped ahead of time.

Hello, I have a small storage area that has walls made of old barn wood. My problem is this room was used to ferment wine for years and has a smell to it. I am wanting to use it for storage but not wanting to put anything in there until i clean it up and get rid of smell. Do you recommend some sort of sealer or to paint the walls? Thank for your thoughts in advance.

Wondering about the Borax spray. Does it leave any residue or film that needs to be cleaned? Or will it be okay to put a stain on afterwards without cleaning?

Thank you so much @Charlie & Jayne Neu when we generally oven heat our wood we will put it on the lowest temperature setting and do it for about 10 to 15 minutes each side. But it will depend on different factors like age dryness, or moisture. I hope this helps at least a bit :)

It actually does. I torch my wood it's the only way. Idk why anyone would bath wood 😂. Been a woodworker well over 15 years I've learned if the wood is expensive like barnwood ect. Use the torch to heat the wood some people don't want their woods look changed.

Can I wash and spray borax solution after washing/cleaning and let dry for 3 days? Or is it better to wash, let dry for 3 day then spray solution?
@Mountainmodernlife
@Mountainmodernlife 4 жыл бұрын
Hey @Melissa Martine sorry for the delayed response. I think either way will work. The washing of the wood removes anything on the surface that the brush can get whereas the Borax seeps into the wood for anything else. Does that make sense?

very helpful.?Thank yiy. i have an opportunity to buy 12 by 12 by 8 ft barn wood beams and 8 by 8 by up to 16’ lengths. Over 100 years old . Probably 600 linear ft worth. $1000. Mostly pine. Good deal? Suggestions in turning this wood into 20 times cash? Fireplace mantels? Slice into 2”boards? 1” flooring boards?
@Mountainmodernlife
@Mountainmodernlife 4 жыл бұрын
That doesn't seem like a bad rate @Brad Brown though to be honest I haven't bought in bulk like that so my knowledge is a bit limited. There's so much you could do with it I think you'd be able to get your money back though it would take a lot of work. Let me know what you decide to do and how it goes for you, I'd be interesting in hearing :)
