Handwarmers, S01E03: Rebuild a Zippo Handwarmer with Carbon Felt and Platinum Catalyst

When your Zippo Hand Warmer dies, you could buy a replacement burner with questionable catalyst material, and place it back on the mantle of the scorched cotton packing, or you could rebuild it with carbon felt and high quality platinum catalyst on a durable substrate for about the same cost.
This demonstration goes through the process of rebuilding a Zippo Hand Warmer to give it a new life, and engineer it so it can function at maximum performance levels.
While we're at it, you'll learn a better way to fill, and how to stop the naptha stink that is the bane of liquid fuel Hand Warmers.
If you do not own a Zippo already, then there is no advantage to owning a brand name over a generic aftermarket item, so you can plan your purchases accordingly and save some funds to spend on your next outdoor adventure instead.
This procedure will also work on most of the other similar Hand Warmers that may be laying in your closet since they died.

I have three of the current Zippo hand warmers. I have a lot of trouble lighting them despite following directions exactly. The catalyst seems to degrade quickly. The current head design is significantly different than what you show here. Have you tried replacing the catalyst in a current stock Zippo?

All liquid fuel handwarmers operate on the same principles, the material to refurbish them is therefore the same, as are the procedures.

Does the catalyst pad in a factory zippo suck? Mine is 5 days old and will not stay lit. It also looks like the Chinese heads and not like the one in this video. Adequate fuel and airflow. Are they better when rebuilt like yours? Thanks in advance!

When the unit is new it should work. Your unit is probably going out for one of the many reasons outlined in the videos. Having said that, I find I have the most problems with the Zippos going out, and the best luck with the S-Boston.

Hello my friend, I live in France, I would like to rebuild a catalyst, but I do not know what type of "foam" you use can you tell me what is it? And by what can I replace it if I dont find it in France ? Have a nice day ! French friend

There is no foam in the rebuild process of a handwarmer. To rebuild the catalyst you use platinum catalyst material.

The head (catalyst part) kept detached from the body of the warmer when using. Any suggesnsts? Thanks.

pinch the bottom edges of your catalyst head together so it has a tighter fit.

Does the kit include the Catalyic pieces? or is that a separate order?

All items for handwarmer rebuild can be bought individually, or as part of a kit.

Hey man great video you got came to it because it seems like my zippo hand warmer burner is kicking the bucket it doesn’t seem to want to keep on going even if it as enough fuel and one more thing I never took note upon the Frist time using it if the hole platinum catalyst would glow but it’s definitely not doing it now my question is is yours an older model because mine doesn’t have that spring instead it has like a copper like gasket part that under the platinum catalyst my question how can make this burner rock that nice glow and give off some good heat I have not said this even with the original burner I freaking love this thing I don’t even think about those other ones that are basically over sized oxygen absorbers thinks and when can you get more of that platinum catalyst in stock thanks new sub and like from me

None of the stock handwarmers came with springs, it was just an idea given to me by Jeff Hanna as a way to hold the catalyst in the handwarmer head without falling out in fragments while maintaining a proper gap between the reservoir material and the catalyst material to enable air flow and thus ensure the platinum gets sufficient oxygen.
