We are glad to be having Zane McNeill to debut our new series of collaborations with other scholars and activists. Z. Zane McNeill is a nonbinary activist, scholar, writer, and artist whose co-edited collection, Queer and Trans Voices: Achieving Liberation Through Consistent Anti-Oppression, was recently published by Sanctuary Publishers.
In this piece, he wrote about how structures of oppression (and thus, liberation) are etched within our bodies, using theory from Eli Clare and Michel Foucault and speaking honestly about personal experience.

Thank you so much for this beautiful video and essay. I feel I want to reflect on the metaphor of Mountains in the essay. Something about it is unsettling, and I think of mountains as how the planet talks. Perhaps we can dance with them in very different ways. They are so generous.

At 4:40-ish there is something powerfull I think. That if we recognize that the world isn't as dualistic as it seems, that we if we start thinking about each other in a less binary or digital way, and acting accordingly, we are dismantling systems of oppression (even in a tiny way). Not reducing others to some category or group, not tying to fit them into existing boxes, but leaving space for their conplex humanity (or other ways of benig) is so humanizing, such a beautiful and necessary thing to do. Even though it can be hard.

It's also respectfull in the most root definition of respect (which comes from latin re-spicere: to look again). Look again at someone you think to know and you will find beautifull, complex humanity...

The reminder of our power at the end is so fitting. We do have the power to change things, we've proven that again and again, and if/because we must, we'll do so many more times.

I think reducing colonialism to ‘whiteness’ is pretty naive. Your whiteness isn’t perpetuating capitalism, your complacency is. People are able to abuse hierarchy because the masses generally dont revolt (in the west). You should feel much more bad for perpetuating capitalism via your actions not your skin color.
