@@donkey3187 I really believe that Edison eighter killed or had the guy killed who actually invented the 1st camera. The guy's personal belongings were found on the train, Joseph Nicephore Niepce inventor of the 1st camera was to meet with someone to get his camera idea off the ground but he never made the meeting and his personal papers/& camera was missing. His body had been found not far from the train tracks, not far from the train station. Not long after we know the rest and who got the credit for the 1st camera. Edison missed by a few hrs to make good his claim on inventing the 1st phone.

As a historian, when you said the name William Strickland, by ears perked up. I actually went back to make sure I heard it correct. He also designed President James K. Polk's tomb as well. He built our state capital in Nashville. He said it was his crowing achievement and his entombed within the walls.

George Washington is a fascinating guy and I can never get over the fact that he came from an English family. I now view Americans as ‘the same but different’ but really, in Washington’s time it was a rapid change from the ‘British colonists’ to ‘Americans’. A change in mentality. So curious. Also, it’s strange when you see someone’s tomb. Then it’s like ‘oh, there you are. I’ll never truly know you but I’m standing only a few paces away.’

Damn he died on Dec 14 my birthday....it's strange all the stuff that's happened on my bday John lennons 10 min of silence on Dec 14 1980 I was born almost 9 months to the day after William Randy Rhoads was killed in a plane crash Dimebag Darrell was buried on Dec 14 2004...his death was the John Lennon of my generation John and dime were both killed on dec 8th 24 yrs apart 2012 school shooting in Newtown CT gunman opened fire at an elementary school killing many children and teachers. So sad the saddest thing about the shooting in Newtown was that was my 30th birthday and my wife and I went out to eat and when we are at the restaurant I was talking to her about Columbine and Virginia Tech and how high school shootings happen all the time and we don't know when the next one's going to happen.. we finished our lunch went to shop came home turned on the TV and seen what happened in Connecticut and where completely thrown off because it was something that we were talking about that afternoon. What are the chances?? very sad all those innocent kids that were killed doesn't make any sense Anyhow it always seems ur own date has had misfortune more than happy times,

Why is Martha Washington's moniker engraved as "consort?" She was married to a great man, a farmer, a warrior, a gentleman, a liberator of slaves, a president; he was not a monarch, as the definition explains. Thank you.

i wondered the same when i saw that, so i looked it up. notice it says "especially" not "exclusively" _of a monarch_ . consort n. A husband or wife, especially the spouse of a monarch. n. A companion or partner.

I'm surprised that they did not mention this factoid: There is also a tomb for Washington beneath the Capitol Rotunda in Washington, DC. Congress wanted to rebury George and Martha there, and they wanted to turn the Rotunda into a mausoleum dedicated to Washington. After it was completed, the Washington family refused to let the government move George and Martha's remains from Mount Vernon. The tomb on Capitol Hill is empty. (See en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Washington%27s_Tomb_(United_States_Capitol) )

An old friend, and a noted collector of presidential memorabilia, showed me a very ornate presentation case (bedecked in red velvet and gold) that contained a regal crown and a lock of hair and the pinkie finger of Washington. The provenance reveals that Washington’s Physican was granted permission to acquire these parts as was apparently custom. When the remains were moved to higher ground, the corpse was examed and the pinkie was noted missing.

Hi Peter! Thank you for the question and we apologize for the late response. George Washington did not have any direct descendants because he had no biological children, only step-children. It is suspected that he may have been infertile.

@@mountvernon well that sucks for his family. I'm devorced with no kids myself and not because of being able to have kids, my ex wife Angy did loose one baby due to a miscarriage way back in 2001 but luckily my younger brother Chris who's American has 3 little kids who I love to pieces.

With no disrespect to anyone, I wonder what was the men's first thought when they had to open Washington's casket to move his body to one place to another.

Martha is described here as "consort". Was Washington considered Nobility or was this a term used during the period in which Washington lived?
