The main happy music piece that starts about 1:25 is called “Sellenger’s Round”, or alternatively “The Beginning of the World”, and it’s a famous morris dance tune. Recorded on a number of morris albums, especially those by the Albion Dance Band. I remembered it all these years from when I was 5 or 6. It’s one of my favorites and it is available on iTunes by numerous artists.

Like others here, I watched Paul Terry cartoons on television during the early 50's in NYC. I'm thinking it was channel 13 and the program was Uncle Fred's Cartoon Frolics. A man in a suit surrounded by kids sitting in the gallery. The music for any of the cartoons was a medley of maybe 5 selections - always the same music.
@Donato48
@Donato48 4 жыл бұрын
That is correct. Channel 13 filmed in Symphony Hall (Newark, NJ). Junior Frolics hosted by Uncle Fred Sales. I was in the gallery for one show with my cousins. I was probably about 4 years old (1952?). Disappointed that Bosco wasn't the sponsor of that show because they would give out jars of Bosco to those in the gallery

Junior Frolics! Holy moley! Sometimes "Uncle" Fred Sayles would also read comic book versions of fairy tales. The name of the books escape me. However, a recording of Grieg played in the background while Mr. Sayles read aloud. Wow.

Some of these early Paul Terry cartoons ran on local TV when I was a kid (and I ain't no kid anymore) with different music, from a distributor called Stuart Productions. Loved 'em then and it's great to see them again. Paul Terry was one of the greatest pioneers of animation, and of course went on to start Terrytoons and create Mighty Mouse and Heckle & Jeckle.

These surreal cartoons are overflowing with tiny details, like the duck mannered opening and closing of doors or the way he backs out to the wall after being nearly drowned, and has amusing bits like the dog prodding the farmer with a back leg for some petting, much to the farmer's annoyance. The catchy music, as usual, doesn't match the action, making them eerier and quirkier and funnier. Unlike the digital-age cartoons, which get old very quickly, these black and white, hard-lined animations are so simple and so matter-of-fact they seem ageless and often nearly futuristic. They don't overstay their welcome, either.

Another viewing of this great cartoon. It looks kind of primitive but it manages to create a nice cartoonishness that really works. And the story just gets better and better as it goes along. Farmer Gray's real and true name is Farmer Al Falfa. I forget the story but the name change was some kind of short lived tv rechristening, but he's Farmer Al.

Growing up in Brooklyn during the 50's and 60's, I recall that one of the NYC TV stations ran these cartoons in the early morning, soon after the station went back on air. later on they were played very late at night before the station went off the air and into test pattern mode.

Wishing to relive my happy childhood a bit in the 1970's I reached out to Thomas J Valentino, Inc. who used to be a notable soundtrack music licensor and I found out that they did license out selections from their film music library to the Commonwealth production of the Paul Terry Aesop's Fables for striping them with music. Adding he music cues was poorly done with the music often not matching the action in any meaningful way but as kids did we know any better. I realize now how much a child's brain can store as these music themes seem like I heard them only yesterday and are indelibly burned into my mind. By the way the program I saw these cartoons on was Early Bird Cartoons on WABC channel 7 in NYC. Must have been from around 1958 until around 1963 when they vanished forever from channel 7. They were the first thing on the air after the sign-on as I recall. Over the years I have searched for these genuine Commonwealth Terrytoons only to find the silent cartoons but with a different soundtrack music that did not match my vivid memories of these cartoons. Let me know if anyone ever comes up with the original Commonwealth Aesop's Fables as made for TV in the 1950's.

I'm equally influenced by the music cues which are burned in my brain as well. Those Early Bird Cartoons on ch 7 (I'm also from NY) had fabulous excerpts from the "classical" genre, on eo f the major reasons I became a lifelong musician. Problem is while I did play in orchestras I can't identify the titles and composers of many of these tracks. Do you know of a resource that might reveal this information? I have a bunch of footage but the newer soundtracks suck. :-) bstoloff@aol.com

Yes I bought 16mm prints of some of these cartoons with added music tracks but it was not the Commonwealth release with that very familiar music. Some of that music was recently composed (1950s) from the Thomas J Valentino Music Library which used to be in NYC. IF you could find an old set of those 78 RPM discs which the library was distributed on up the the advent of LPs some time in the 1950's you could most likely find some of that music and thus get the composer credits. Also old TJ Val catalogs would also be a helpful reference. This music cost Commonwealth a licensing fee per needle down so I can imagine the producers were delighted to mix in lots of free Public Domain light classical music like Strauss' Tritsch Tratsch Polka which has been a lifetime favorite of mine. Please let me know if you make headway on this musical history quest?

Strange cartoon, and I am not sure they were trying.. The characters, especially that mouse looked great, everything a toon should be. That goose butler may be an ancestor of Gandy Goose. I remember these old Farmer Al Falfa cartoons from watching tv in LA back in the 50s on Sheriff John's Lunch Brigade. I never much liked Farmer Al Falfa, but lately I am developing a real fondness for these old Terry toons.

A lot of commenters here had the same experience as I had, but I'll comment anyway to increase the comment count. In the early 60's as a youngster, I, too, woke up at the crack of Dawn, after the test pattern ended and the National Anthem played against the waving flag on the flagpole, I watched these cartoons. I recall the music to be entertaining/soothing but don't remember the melodies. I do remember my favorite being when the farmer forced a mouse to be the engine in his car and put it under the hood of his car, and when the farmer arrived at his destination the farmer looked under the hood and found a muscle bound mouse who punched the farmer into the horizon Ha!

I have a catalog in my files from the early 1970's but the library had been updated from the old library that would have been available to commonwealth films in the early 1950's. I even purchased several of the TJV LP's ($5.00 each) hoping to catch some familiar music but I did not find the familiar themes we are longing to recover. Somewhere there must exist a set of old discs (most likely 78 RPM) for the TJ Valentino Library as it existed in the early 1950's where I am sure you could hear the licensed music used on these cartoons.
