This is the balance *necessary* in dog training. I don’t care what anyone says. You can either submit to living with an out of control, unhappy dog or you can teach your dog to live a happy, balanced life where rules and boundaries exist.

I busted up laughing at 1:50 because this is essentially our dog and I've never seen behavior like that addressed in a training video before. Especially the collapsing on the floor and flailing when you ask for a sit/try to put a lead on. Drives us nuts and we didn't know how to address it. Thank you!

I have had dogs wonderfully trained go anywhere, Dobermans and Manchester terriers for 20 plus years. When I got my current MT, I bought into the "NEW" positive-only training method. I love how every funny thing that happened during his sessions (dog falling in the water, stumbling, doing quirky things) never made Joel laugh but the one bratty dog with an attitude somehow got a chuckle out of him.

You are so right about how things have changed with dogs and their owners. 20 years ago with my first Doberman, I didn’t have to carry pepper spray and have a mental map of the areas with aggressive dogs.

We took in a neighbor's pitbull just about a year ago after they’d kept him constantly crated for basically his entire life, done no training beyond "sit," "down," and "paw," and never taken him on a walk. Let me just say, after all the positive only methods completely failing, your techniques have given us a totally different dog than when we brought him home. He's only 3 & 1/2 now so there's still a lot of puppy in him, but he knows that when we say something, like "sit" or "drop it" or "come here," it's not optional. We *will* push his butt to the floor (gently, of course). We *will* make him let go of whatever he's holding onto. We *will* go get him, and play time will be over if he tries to pretend he just didn't hear us. And he is a *much* better behaved and *much* happier dog because we don't make him guess what is and is not acceptable behavior. Thank you, truly.

I adopted a adult siberian husky. Such and spazz when putt a leash on and a puller. This helped so much! For the first time today I had a well behaved dog walking WITH me. Not pulling me. It was insane. Thank you!

I did not understand the fake the dog out concept at first, but now I do. It prevents dogs from rehearsing and makes sure they are paying attention to you. This was a great video that should be very useful for people.

Hi. I think Jojo has Hip Dyspalsia. He has difficulties to sit down , and prefere to lay on the Floor. My doberman had exactly the same problem. He couldn’t walk , stand or sit for longer periods of time. Notice how he leans toward his left side when sitting. Poor Jojo

This was actually a great lesson for me. I have my dogs very well trained and behaved, but often they know what i want from our habits, so they assume and go ahead and do it a little before i'm ready. I'll try shaking it up so they check in. Thank you.

Maybe not a popular thought but I’d check out a dog’s back or other possible source of distress/pain that the dog is avoiding staying in a position that stresses it. Backs, legs, paws can be painful esp w/4 legs. It can be jus silly but maybe not. Pets can have gotten a tweak somewhere in their big moving & rough play. They’re stoic or silly over stuff. Not that this applies exactly to this big long back dog. Js

I love your "go get" method! I have a lab mix that likes to bark through the fence at neighbors but while doing so won't come when called. I did the go get method two MAYBE three times and he knows if i call him whatever he is doing i will come get him if he doesn't listen and it's not worth the trouble for him. It was like night and day. Now when i go to let him outside to potty i can see him thinking about barking and he will turn around to check in with me and won't bark! Anyone who says positive only training has never had a stubborn or willful pet. To be honest my favorite phrase now is "i'm over it" it really sets a tone for training with no nonsense.

I tried the positive training with my 13 month old Welsh Border Collie. I swear I could see her laughing at me 😂 Now I do the Tug at her lead. She’s not laughing at me any longer, now she listens and learns. Great video.

You are refreshing. Your videos are real life. I watch trainers seem to have perfect behavior in 2 mins but my guess is that’s 50 takes later. This dog is an example of how my dog is. Exactly and u are showing fixes real time.

My shelter dog bit the leash when I first got him. "Drop it" didn't work. It was bad enough that we couldn't even finish our first walk. So I took him to a field on our route and waited for him to bite and tug the leash again. When he did, I wrestled him to the grass and didn't let him up until he released it and calmed down. No hitting, no yelling, just giving the command and spreading my weight out on him (I'm pretty skinny, so I wasn't worried about hurting him) until he submitted. A little rough-housing to show who was boss. Any time he tried to wiggle free, I'd just readjust my weight until he understood he wasn't going anywhere. He let go and we finished out walk peacefully, and that was the last time he bit the leash. That was seven years ago. I kind of knew he was a good boy and just needed a little perspective change. People are so afraid to try unusual things with stubborn dogs. Meanwhile, they'll spend weeks trying to do it the "ethical" way, as if a dog knows what that is.

I watched this yesterday, but today while spending quiet time with my Ozzy I reflected on this video. I find it so refreshing to see you all tobe a true dog lovers. I am glad you were able to show us that even you have to push past their cuteness and wanting to feel gushy over them in order to maintain the confident training method. Our dogs are a major part of our lives and self control is key to managing all parts of life.

I used the release and pop method on our walk this morning for the first time after finding your channel yesterday. Bloody brilliant technique. The best walk we’ve ever had. Hardly any pulling and she was checking in with me and staying close and on loose leash. We will keep doing this method and get this perfected. All the other methods I tried were not working and I don’t like the Mollycoddling way a lot of modern trainers train. So happy I found this channel.

We had our first dog in the 80s. my god how things have changed since then. So many more dogs. An industry dedicated to scaring owners about what will harm their dog from a list of about 20 foods, telling them “no” will harm their confidence lol), no slip leads, treats for everything etc etc. People talking about dogs like they’re their toddlers. Precious owners, precious dogs.

Every time I watch one of your videos I learn so much the loose lead works a treat I have a 6 stone American bull dog who was nervous constantly pulled to get back to the car I started working on your touch methods slowed the walk down so she could absorb her surrounds and used the loose lead it’s totally changed her and she is so more relaxed and confident thank you we are totally enjoying our walks now 👍

Being tough doesn't make dogs hate you. One of my neighbors was watching an older dog for another neighbor. The dog had a huge problem with humping and the neighbors and the owner, who was a big guy, all said they couldn't stop him from doing it. It wasn't a dominance thing for him. He was neutered and only did it when other people around him were super excited and loud, and he wanted to join in. I stopped him in two days. I didn't yell, didn't knee him. I would simply put my hand underneath his chest and push him firmly while saying, "Off." Once he saw that I meant it, he stopped completely, even when the other neighbors came over, and as a bonus, it eliminated jumping as well. If any of us came to the door, he would calmly sniff our feet and back up so we could come in, always wagging his tail happily. I watched an older, spoiled dog for a friend. She won't beg at the table when I'm watching her, because even though her owner allowed it, she knows I don't and will lay down patiently until I'm done or she needs to go out. I was able to teach her to walk nicely on a leash in a couple of days even though the owner told me her dog is liable to run away and wouldn't stay with her on walks. I wasn't able to teach her a lot of commands because she's not my dog, but I got her to obediently heel on a leash, and if she started sniffing at a random piece of food on the ground, once I said "leave it," she would immediately obey. She wasn't perfect, but she did well enough for me to get permission to take her to parks with a large crowd of people and other dogs. These owners are adults who baby their dogs, and I'm a 25 year old girl who's never owned a dog in my life before. Those owners paid me to watch their dogs, and those dogs are always super happy to see me when I come over. I'm not strict, I've simply seen enough nonsense from other owners and their dogs, and I won't tolerate that.

I have a dog exactly like this and I was led down the wrong path by a behaviorist and a trainer who just wanted more treats, more treats, redirect, more treats. Everything changed when a friend who used to train dogs told me, "this is your world, and he's living in it."

UGH !!!! I have a now 9 month old Golden Mountain Doodle..Golden Doodle and Berna Doodle mix. He bites his leash, jumps up and down for joy when we begin our walk !!!! Our puppy trainer always said "you should never take from a dog..always give something !" WORST ADVICE !! On the drop it command we were taught to give a treat. Our psycho of a dog always grabs stuff, runs, then expects treats so we can get back our bras, peanut butter lids, homework, tax papers, socks, etc. Chews on us as a human toy, pulls at our clothes...horrible to walk !!! LOVE HIM but damn I have a lot of work ahead of me !!!! Great video!

We only use martingale collars for our dogs to prevent escaping the collar! They make great everyday collars as well as training collars!

Love this guy. Train horses mostly green and solving problems. Many of the principles are the same. Your animal should be engaged in the process and listening to you or cuing off you. Boundaries must be set and enforced. I of course have dogs. I’ve been to positive only trainers and I quit because it made no sense to not be able to instantly communicate with your dog to stop or correct behavior. In agility my border collie was crossing the beam and started to dismount I made a disapproving noise and he instantly corrected, but I got a lecture about how “we’ don’t do that. I partner with my animals but in the end I am a benevolent dictator. This guy knows his stuff. A secure dog with a strong leader is a happy dog. And horse for that matter.

I really appreciate you and all your videos. I’ve been binging all night. Me and my boyfriend adopted what we thought was a pit bull from the shelter. Turns out he’s a Dogo Argentino. Who’s been a stray his whole life. He’s also only 1. He is the most loving and caring dog to me and my bf but does the mouthing when we try to correct him or grab his collar or harness. He gets aggressive around other dogs, and also aggressive towards certain people. Not all people but certain ones. We can’t afford to get a trainer or put him through classes. So I’m very thankful for you and your videos. And seeing your level of sternness makes me feel better because I know I’m doing it correctly and I’m not being “abusive” like people would say. I’m constantly having to discipline and raise my voice at our dog (Arroe) because he gets into everything. He misbehaves so terrible and it’s hard. He also has selective hearing. We’ve trained him sit, and lay. But only does it when he wants to do it. Only does it if you give him a treat. So when he met my roommates dog. They got into it because Arroe doesn’t understand social ques and when we would try to correct him or tell him to sit he wouldn’t.

Finally a dog similar to my lab Thanks for showing dogs that aren't perfect..so many trainers say the dog is difficult but they show a "perfect" dog.

Love your no nonsense approach. My son thinks you have to give a dog an incentive to do what they are told. I told my son that the incentive is because I said so. I have a young dog with dominant personality so I don’t let her get away with ever saying “no”. She also does the mouthing and whole world is a game routine.. Thanks for the insightful video.

I have a super high energy thinks everything is a game big strong Husky/Wolf. I remember my dad being a super skilled trainer for his dogs and these methods you use remind me soo much of that! Ive never had such a high energy dog before and these tips have helped a ton with him. my dog is exactly like this, life is a game for him. He bites leash when we do leash work, he lays when he wants to, starts to ignore, you after 5 mins of a training session, he lunes. I have watched this video several times, because my dog is a real clown, too, not ever aggressive. It really helps me. I appreciate the variety of dogs dealt with by Joel, but there aren’t many that I can find that deal with silly impulsivity like this (adorable) dog. I catch myself getting caught up with my dog’s antics and he ends up winning his way. Thank you for reminding me that we have to be “over it”.
