This video is the best comparison which makes me can identify the sound very clearly between different mouthpieces, thank you.

Fun to listen for the differences in the sound... as a sax beginner this also reminds me to blame the mouthpiece when I squeak, thanks!

I absolutely agree! Second the Meyer, first place Theo Wanne. I’m playing the Durga on my Tenor ;-) even I’m still beginner…started two years ago.

Good choice! I'll be watching to see what else Theo Wanne comes out with in the years ahead.

Spend more time with your metal Dukoff. There’s a lot of potential there in your sound. You also don’t necessarily have to use a lighter reed on it-since it’s a D5, you can probably get away with using a 3. I play a metal Dukoff D9 on Tenor (I know) and I’ve noticed that it’s really picky with reeds in terms of strength and placement. They take a lot of patience and getting used to (long tones) but I feel the sound is worth the effort. Great video and thank you for the comparison :)

Cheers, thanks for watching! Yeah the metal Dukoff does have potential but I don't think I've got the required patience. I give it half an hour every year or two and it just confirms its place in the too-hard basket. Darkening it with a harder reed just makes everything more effort than it's worth, when the super-easy Wanne is just sitting there...

Hi Chris Thank you for the mouthpiece run through. So insightful. I would like to know about scale practice, and a run through the altissimo. Many thanks Guillaume

Normally I'm not that good with hearing the distinction between mouthpieces, but your demonstration was quite clear. I've got a SYOS mpc (which is wonderful), but really always wanted a Theo Wanne Durga. Good to hear you rate the Theo Wanne mpc very highly. This pushes me a little closer to maybe buying one of these ridiculously expensive mpcs one day. Suggestion: Why don't you play a R&R song on the tenor one day ;-)

Try the Elements series - a lot more affordable and still amazing pieces. I'm excited to play sax again now, haven't felt that way in many years. Cannot speak highly enough of the Earth! Re tenor, my horn is being borrowed by a friend who needs it more than me right now (I usually stick to the alto)... but I'm going to start writing my own music and will definitely be featuring the tenor. Gimme a month or two. It's coming.

Funny coincidence. I played the Meyer my first 10 years. And I'm playing the acrylic Dukhoff (but a D8 Miami Florida super power chamber) after that. Naturally,i preferred the Dukhoff :) Oh, yeah, and my name is Chris (probably same age too)

Thank you very much for such a complete explanation. I'm now looking for a new mouthpiece and your opinions help me a lot. It also would be great to know your opinions about the selection of reeds in relation to the open tip of the mouthpieces. THANK YOU!! And congratulations for the video. It's great.

You're very welcome! Apologies for late reply. Regarding reeds, generally speaking thinner = brighter, but also more prone to squeaking and intonation issues. I prefer Vandoren ZZ or Java as they're generally easily available at most shops / online, and I play 2.5. But reeds are a hugely personal thing so it;s worth getting a handful of different brands & sizes and finding what works best for you. Good luck!

First time here, Chris. Nice comparison video. Meyer sounds so stuffy compared to the rest, almost classical. I'm a bit surprised that you control the plastic Dukoff far better than the metal. I agree Dukoff's can be like a high wire act. I have one for my tenor and love it. I also have one for my soprano and still can't get it completely under control, although I like how it sounds in the low end of the horn. Never tried a Theo Wanne, basically because the cost as much as one of the student saxes I own. Anyway, enjoyed the video and I think you sound great on the plastic Dukoff and almost too controlled on the Theo Wanne, as if that can be a thing...

Thanks Bob! Yeah I've had a bit more time with the Wanne now and it's opened up for me in terms of versatility - I can make it wail when required, but it just removes that harsh edge the Dukoff had that I never really liked - that nasty upper mid tone, around 3500hZ that I'd always have to EQ out when playing live. The Wanne Earth & Fire are definitely worth a try and are about half the price of their other prohibitively expensive pieces - highly recommend giving them a try if you get a chance!

I had the metal power chamber back in the mid 80s. 8 opening. Build on it was dreadful…Window was crooked, a blob of metal was left in the chamber. I should have been smart enough to return it. I moved to the Jumbo Java A8…one of the old blue ones. Similar in design, but quality and playability much improved. Sold both for good cash maybe 10 years ago. I did also like the plastic Dukoff…

perfect! Watching whole video I got this same though 1 - theo wayne earth 2- Plastic Dukoff 3- Meyer 4 - Metal dukof maybe the #6 of dukoff mouthpiece is the trouble here... almost everyone uses this mouthpiece with #7 or #8.

Step baffles are truly a mystery for me to play too, baffling if you will lol. I sound like your metal Dukoff on one and hate it, but would love to figure it out. You sound great on your plastic however, but even fuller on the Theo Wanne. Anyways, would you recommend something in their lineup versus an otto link as an alto player? I’d like to get that deep, spread, warm sound out of my sax.

the differences are subtle , the Meyer has a rounder tone and you seem to be able to play it easier the other three sounded so similar, the Theo Wanne was less squeky. I had a Dukoff 7 super chamber and it was impossible to play.

Hello.. Great video... Beautiful comparison... I need a little help here.. I'd like to know the difference between Theo Wanne Earth and Theo Wanne Fire, if thats possible... In my country, with the currency exchange, the mouthpieces are considered expensive.. and its almost impossible to get the opportunity to try them before buy.. if u could help to provide some info or comparison on them, it would be a great help for me to make a decision... 😂 My current setup is Barkley Brazil Pop Kustom 7 with Alta Ambipoly Jazz Reed 2.5... i need to upgrade my mouthpiece to metal as the one i'm using now could not give what i need... looking for a little brighter setup, thick high register with good subtone on low register.. Cheers from Malaysia..!!❤🎷

Yeah the Wannes aren't the cheapest, I agree. Metal are generally a lot more than plastic or hard rubber. The Fire was awesome, really fantastic modern tone without being impossible to control... but still just a bit too bright for me - I need to be able to play quietly at least as often as I play loud, and the Fire just didn't have the subtlety I needed. At least not for me, other players might be able to do quiet stuff with it comfortably. If you're looking for something similar but a lot more affordable, you could try the Rico Metalite. I have one on soprano and it's awesome!

Hey mate - I don't think the Elements series has different openings, they're just one size each. Pretty sure that's the case anyway. Definitely recommend trying them out.

You realise more expensive doesn't always equal better right? I tried the Durga and preferred the Earth. The reason they make a bunch of different stuff is because there's no one type that works for everyone.

My alto was a Selmer super action series 2. Not a cheap horn, obviously. Best mouthpiece I ever played was a plastic/rubber diamond Beechler. When I was a kid, of course, I wanted to be like David Sanborn, so I had a few Dukoff mouthpieces. They were garbage, full of pits and inconsistencies. Also, very soft metal.
