Philadelphia's famous news theme has been here since 1971. "Move Closer To Your World" by Al Ham.

I've heard the vocals on this are The Hillside Singers, a group of studio singers brought together "on the fly" in 1971 by producer Al Ham to record a TV commercial jingle for Coca-Cola -- "I'd Like to Buy the World a Coke". The 9 person chorale group included Mary Mayo, a former band singer with the Tex Beneke Orchestra. The commercial proved so popular that The Hillside Singers recorded a non-Coke version called "I'd Like to Teach the World To Sing". The song became a peace ballad, and ended up selling over 1 million copies! The New Seekers, who'd originally slated to record the jingle but cancelled out due to scheduling conflicts, ended up recording their own version of "I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing" in 1972 (which also became a sizeable hit, especially in the United Kingdom).

The legend himself, Jim Gardner will be retiring. He will stop doing the 11p newscast at the end of this year and then will retire at the end of 2022. He announced on air a few weeks ago.

Dennis Taylor I've only watched Action News since 1998 (mostly online),but that guy's a Philly institution. Ditto "Move Closer to Your World",aka the Philadelphia national anthem.

Dennis Taylor I only got to visit Philly for the first time about 18 months ago. I always watched online from Los Angeles(before 2004)and Albuquerque(since 2004). Action News is quite different from what I've been used to over the decades. A Philly institution.

I was born and raised in Philadelphia. I moved to L.A. 10 years ago and I grew up to this news song. I still remember the song. You can't forget it.

Classic score! What great memories this music brings back to me growing up in Cherry Hill in the 1970's. Think Ellisburg Circle, Ponzio's, The Cranberry Room in John Wanamaker's at Moorestown Mall, Strawbridge and Clothier, Bambergers, the old Cherry Hill library, Richman's right next door, and on and on....sadly all are gone today except for Ponzio's. When that goes so goes an era of a simpler, happier time and place to live.

I lived in Atlanta, and I recall my hometown station and then-NBC, now ABC affiliate WSB-TV, as well as WOW-TV in Omaha/Council Bluffs and an unspecified station in Denver (either KBTV (now KUSA), KOA (now KCNC) or KMGH) had the theme in the mid 1970s, before switching to custom themes.

WPXI Channel 11 in Pittsburgh PA used this in the 80s and 90s. In about 95 or so they went way from it and I'm actually about to start a petition on Twitter for them to bring it back

I grew up in LA. I don't remember any of our stations using this for their newscasts. KABC of course had the classic "Cool Hand Luke" music for decades. MCTYW avoided LA. Hmmm...

I believe around the time he was putting it together, Al Ham was working with Daryl Hall (this was before Hall met John Oates while at Temple) I believe. Quite the connections back than.

WPIX-TV (Channel 11 in New York) also used this theme (though sped up slightly and without the vocals) when they had the "Action News" format in the 1970's and early '80s and is actually where I first heard this.

Recently, I came across a video on twitter; a Phili resident made a hilarious compilation showcasing the insanity of Philadelphia mostly from Action News clips, and appropriately enough, used the theme song for it. Most of the comment section had no idea what it was, and the rest of us had to clarify XD

I got news for ya - this wasn't the only station that used this theme by a dang sight. In my home town of Lafayette, LA the ABC affiliate, KATC-TV 3, used it for many years to open its evening newscasts, which were also called "Action News."

Here in the NY metro area, WPIX used the Action News format and MCTYW theme for a time in the late 70s/early 80s, while Hartford/New Haven's WTNH had it through about the late 80s.

If you had extended "Mad Men" further into the 1970's (as I would have done with an eighth season that would have advanced the storylines to 1973 and '74 up to when Nixon resigned), I would have used this to end an episode of that.

The playback seems slow to me, dropping the pitch as well. Perhaps actual studio/video mix required a faster track for timing's sake. I remember it brighter and faster.
