Documentary series dealing with every aspect of special effects in movies, from low-budget make-up to multi-million-dollar computer-generated graphics. The clear presentation includes descriptions of the creation and technical problems of the effects, and interviews with effects technicians, directors, stars and other crew. Each episode deals with one topic, effect or technician (eg theme park rides, CGI, Stan Winston), concentrating on one or more current or recent films.

Not a great pain. We had pretty much automated processes like this by the late 80s. Video in general was easier to work with than film. The real initial challenge for our studio was finding capable framebuffers for our in-house NLE system(built around multiple IRIS 1400 servers). None on the market in 1984 were large (or fast enough) to hold frames at full film resolution, so we finally built our own from scratch.

For some reasons I like how they used cgi back then. I feel like we have too much of them and the wow effect is gone. Less is more I guess. But there was a charm to it and a newness for sure

When CGI first appeared, it had to first be plotted or printed out, and then transferred to the film with an optical printer. It was a real handcraft back then. Those working with movies probably prefer modern technology, as it is much easier and a lot faster, but the old process was more visible than it is today.
