Scariest movie I remember from when I was a kid, and I watched all the horror films too. It makes a lot more sense now as to why. "Safetyism" or the "devouring mother" archetype, or witches or sirens.

Note in the scene on the boat, how each man "becomes" the doctor he's being introduced as - starting with "Doctor Cheswick..." It's a lot like Forrest Gump appearing in the jungle, carrying his rifle and looking like a Bad Ass. Makes you realize how so much of what we see is what we're conditioned to see, not necessarily what's there.

Read this book a few years ago and saw the movie soon after. I had seen the movie back in the 1970s. It is no surprise Paul chose this film to review. An obvious theme that comes to mind is the way in which a misandric woman (a product of failure in the dating game?) misuses her position of power to pay out on men. In the book a pivotal moment is the comment made by the Japanese nurse in the 'zapping ward' upstairs to the effect that women of nurse Ratchet's ilk (childless spinsters) should be retired before they can cause damage. This is missed in the movie translation. Lots of psychology happening in this tale and the conclusion is powerful.

Few others out there: A Marriage Story, The Piano and the Last Duel. Those last 2 are supposed to be for Feminists but hilariously (or aggravatingly: laugh or you'll cry) , they speak to MRA issues! Example: think of how different the movie "The Piano" would be if it were instead, "The Flute".

The care and adroitness with which Janice Fiamengo chooses her words is a real delight to behold, as is the sincere appreciation for the masculine human spirit she betrays when viewing the footage of McMurphy kicking up the dust against Nurse Ratched's toxic authority. We are so lucky to have allies of the calibre of Janice, as we are likewise to have erudite intellectual-spearmen in Paul Elam and Tom Golden. Thank you for all you do, folks

I have seen the film years ago as I discovered the golden age of hollywood, I was mostly watching movies from 30s up to late 60s, but ended also watching this movie. I think this movie along with The Shawshank Redemption are some of the few truth, high art movies that came to be after the end of hollywood golden age. I am not sure if I understood the movie very well, but listening to you was very interestign and eye opening, I have felt like rewatching the movie in my imagination while listening to your analysis. Found this channel just lately, it is absolutely refreshing dose of common sense and vital ways of perceiving reality which are being told, no scratch that..... -which are being promoted, even just mentioned so rarely, if at all.

You've probably heard this recommendation a thousand times already, but I would love for you guys to do a review of "the Big Lebowski." I think it's a truly great American movie, based on how it depicts a lot of our gynocentric thinking, without even intending to do so. The Dude gets essentially lives the MGTOW lifestyle, gets pushed into saving the damsel in distress, finds out it was bullshit all along, even becomes a father against his own will, and his own best friend Walter can't give up either his past identity as a Vietnam vet, or his identity as taking care of his ex-wife's needs via her dog (which are probably linked). It's essentially justified as a story just because it forces the Dude to reproduce, but the raising of his child goes to his female partner, who has no interest in raising it with him. What's the lesson in all of his injustice towards him as a man? The Dude abides. That's what every feminist and government agency wants for us all, to just abide.
@jcrnda
@jcrnda 3 жыл бұрын
The Dude was lost to the cause before the story started. No job, no money, no life (except bowling), he's stuck in his own Groundhog Day and is incapable even of thinking. If you pay attention, everything the Dude says was something he just heard from someone else. And Walter looks like he would have a stroke any minute... But I agree, the Big Lebowski should be reviewed!
@erosmangr74
@erosmangr74 3 жыл бұрын
@@jcrnda What makes him fascinating, though, is that he is kind of living a red-pilled lifestyle, whilst being blue-pilled and oblivious. He just wants to be left alone, and lives a MGTOW lifestyle. I don't think the Cohen brothers did any of that intentionally, but that is part of why the movie is so great, in my opinion.

Too close to home with an older brother who recently passed away. I could not write my memories of this extremely talented, wonderful man in terms of the gynocentric world he could not cope with. No, the "problem" was his "mental illness" from an early age, NOT the family he grew up in. I could not be that explicit as all the surviving women (and several men) would have been horrified to think "little innocent me" was what drove him "crazy." "OH! Thank you brother for taking care of him all those years! (so we didn't have to deal with him)." Six months since his demise, and I still cannot reflect on the tragedy of his life without being reduced to a sobbing mess. A sane man struggling for all he was worth to cope with an insane world. A world where most women and far too many men are unconscious.

Great review! Very insightful. I've seen Cuckoo's nest many times but had not recognized this theme as well as you all described, an allegory for a major social trend. I had actually thought the book was more anti-feminist than the film, which I felt was more anti-democratic, but after y'all's review, I think this is a minor theme.

I watched this film right before this review. I'm 50, a grown-ass man, and I still weep at the shock therapy, suicide and pillow scenes. I used to think Nurse Ratched was simply misguided, and arrogant, but today I realized how manipulative and inappropriate she was. Note the red light over the doorway when she first enters. Her badgering of Harding and especially Billy were not only nappropriate, it was not her job description and she should have been fired.

The mental health industry is not like this anymore. Now the pendulum has swung the other way. Gone are the days of forcing patients to take meds. I worked years as a RN and felt at risk of injury often, physically as well as professionally, as false allegations from patients are taken at times way too seriously. Also gone are seclusion rooms, restraints, and adequate PRN meds for patient agitation. The institutions have changed hugely, but still are about as useless for patients, just not as punitive.
@elim7228

Very interesting to hear from an insider. That doesn't sound good. Looks like the pendulum swung too much the other way? Anyway, I think the mental institution was more like a canvas to the artists in this case. It is an allegory of the world we live in. Mad world.

I agree with this analysis for the most part. Nurse only caring that she is obeyed, not about the guy sitting down, really hit home. One point of contention: you said that this turned tragic at the end. I disagree. The ending was inevitable. Freedom for the sake of freedom always ends in destruction. You're not seeking something positive, you're only running from the negative. If you only have half of the equation, you're lost. Same with Bibbit getting laid. Screwing some girl didn't make him a man. It didn't give him the strength to stand up for himself, it only showed him there was more to life. In summation, the one part of the movie they failed to point out: Hedonism and Nihilism are two sides of the same coin.

I disagree: Freedom for the sake of freedom ends in love. I think it is important to note just how subtle and deep gynocentric twists to our thinking creep in, even into your argument: What McMurphy does in that institution is plain love in action. A misandric world depicts it as destruction - which it is not. Things have become twisted. I pledge what he does is enough - bringing people together, taking care, taking no bullshit. He even stays when he could have left to take care, because he cares. It is not his character lacking a vision, he is the fullest embodiment of that, it is the vicious system and Ratchet's destruction that does the destruction. Let's keep that clearly separated! Cheers!

If humanity went through the same phases every human goes through, its childhood would be the matriarchy, where the mother controls the resources (communism) in small tribes. Humanity's adolescence would be the patriarchy, where the father creates a ordered environment (the state), but demands subordination. Now we are supposed to grow up, move out and be free people, self-organizing on the basis of individual (property) rights, but the great mother returned, took control of the state apparatus (socialism) literally suffocating us, holding us in her embrace (lockdown), making us dependent on her to keep the children from leaving.

When I look at this story, I see a different dynamic that you guys don't mention... The institution is a power structure that the people who run it did not create. In fact, they don't know how to maintain it or even protect it. The power that they wield is exclusively the power of oppression. Nurse Ratchet may be the personification of it, but it's really the entire institution. This is a great allegory for the current situation. The leftist, feminist, tyrannical institutions of the world have never created anything. ANYTHING. They do not protect or maintain. They do not inspire or explore. Their ONLY power is to oppress. They are parasites, or possibly cancers. But... it takes a relatively small number of men (yes MEN) to rebuild. Everything here today will go away, at some point. But the power of men to overcome and forge anew still exists.
