I feel like because people had smaller TVs back then and HD wasn't even a thing, people would be more inclined to believe this stuff purely because they couldn't see what was happening on the screen as well as we can today. All they'd see is what looks an awful lot like someone committing a crime but not much more than that. Now, for theatrical release it might be more obvious with a bigger picture, but I'd assume most people would see it at home on a rented vhs tape or something. I don't know. But I can see some reasons why people might fall for it under the unique circumstances of the time

@@heartslove8449 fair but in terms of accessibility I think that the screen size is a solid case for how it may not have worked out quite so well for the general populace at the time, and alongside the quality issue could have definitely contributed to why people fell for it.

@@heartslove8449 The reason we can watch things on phones iPads and such is due to resolution increases though. Imagine an iPad pro with the screen quality of an iPod Touch 2nd Gen. It would be awful, and you really wouldn't be able to see any details. As somebody who didn't see a flat screen TV in person outside of a tv until about 2010, you could *not* see fine details back then. There was a lot of signal noise, and TVs were terrible quality, regardless of if they were similarly sized to modern TVs. I don't even want to think about a 50+ inch tube TV, that would hurt my eyes so bad. Do you watch videos in 360p? If not, then modern is non comparable. You can literally see actors pores and stuff nowadays, back then you'd be lucky to read what they're hat said.

In the 90's I had a friend who told me about a movie they saw where after the movie ended there was scene where a real woman was killed. My friend believed this to be a real killing, she was terrified just talking about it to the point that I always wanted to know what movie it was. In the mid 2000's thanks to the internet I randomly remembered this movie and searched for it. I found it pretty quickly and couldn't believe that anyone would think this was real. It's crazy how different things were in the 70's. It's hard now with special effects that are incredibly realistic to understand that people didn't know what a murder looked like, so if you make this appear like it's true, people will believe you. Glad you covered this. Great video.

God, I remember this film. Back when VHS recorders took off, a friend of the family opened a video library, and we'd end up renting tons of films from them. They really went into it heavily and got loads of niche films. Then this film popped up, along with a few others and yes, the hype and stufff went with it. As soon as I got it home, I was still believing it, but it only took a few minutes of the first atrocity before you could easily see this was absolute bullshit. I get how many like myself would tentatively be suckered in by hype, especially as back then there was NO media coverage of stuff like this, and of course the distribution was limited, lending to the myth. But anyone who viewed it would quickly see how shit it was when you can't even get fake blood the right colour or texture. Let alone anything else. The only thing that wasn't dull about this film was the end scene which was a murder that was pretty innovative, though still bullshit.

I think a lot of the "oh my god it's real!" came from people not used to gore films who simply didn't look at the screen during the dismemberment-scene at the end. Being too shocked to visually confirm what they think is going on, their mind pieced together a version that looks way more realistic than was shown in the movie. Which is a bit like how audiences swear there is a lot of explicit gore in Texas Chainsaw Massacre and the infamous shower scene in Psycho where people were so certain that Hitchcock had shown the knife stabbing the naked breast, when no actual knife penetrating skin action was even filmed. Stories like that does feed into the belief that "what you don't see is much scarier than what can be shown". But it also means that for people who just looks at the images as they are... the result is a much tamer reaction. And of course there's also the infamous story where Charlie Sheen called the FBI when he saw the second installment of The Guinea Pig films. And the filmmakers just laughed and sent them a copy of the making of video clearly showing the prostetics and fakery.

I bought this back in the day (roughly 18 or so years ago) in the city of Melbourne, Australia at a store called Peril Underground. The cover looked like a crumpled paper bag with no film rating on the front or back, and even the clerk tried to convince me it was legit. I bought it for $80 on DVD when they were still somewhat new-ish. I went home immediately and watched it. I knew straight away that it was terribly fake and i'd been beyond ripped off. I went back to the store and asked for a refund. The dude behind the counter was shocked, but obliged - i bought some cool goth gear, because i was one of those teens back then. When i look back on this situation and tell others about it, they dumbfounded that I didn't have access to the internet, and didn't own much tech at all, but i'd just tell them that it was all about exploration, and trial and error back then. I rented a ton of movies, drank a shitload of goon bags in the city, saw alot of shit. Good times. Manson claimed they killed hundreds of people , any time he told authorities where to find bodies none were found , he was likely just trolling them.

On another note, if there ever was a KZfaqr house party, project x style, you know Whang would be there.

Death Edit On May 16, 1977, Michael Findlay was killed in a helicopter accident on the roof of the Pan Am Building in New York City. The accident occurred shortly after the 5:33 PM arrival of the New York Airways helicopter from John F. Kennedy Airport. It was in the process of taking on 21 passengers for the return trip when the landing gear failed and the aircraft tipped on its side while the rotors were still running. Findlay and two other passengers in the process of boarding were slashed to death as the spinning rotors detached and disintegrated. Another male passenger died later in hospital. A woman on the street was killed when hit by falling debris.[5][6]

My best friend trying to hype this movie so much I refused to watch it when it came out or ever would have been comedic gold if there was just a camera!

The movie '8mm' with Nicholas Cage, really brought the idea of 'snuff' films in to the mainstream back in the late 90's. I remember being a Junior in high school, watching '8mm' in my parents basement with my then girlfriend. We could barely even focus on the movie because due to her monthly cycle being delayed, we thought she was pregnant. I apologize for that random info but it's just a significant memory from my teenage years.

I recommend going through the Mondo movie iceberg everything from shockumentaries to real disturbing moments caught on tape.

I fell for the movie The Poughkeepsie tapes. It's a mockumentary with "real" tapes from a serial killer. I was like 14 when i saw it

Exactly, they're very easy to find on the clear net. Snuff films are very real, but a lot of the more known films are just fictional violence.
