Fly Beep you must be below 30. It’s simply a generational thing. I’m 39 and I also think it’s weird that people actually BUY digital copies. If you lose internet or if the service dies, all that stuff purchased goes with it. My hard copies are always there- and can’t be altered or anything !

If you really want to secure yourself from that you can download the movie/series. Just use Windows/Android App. No App for MacOS though. Also is a great way to watch content definitely in HD as there won't be any "network optimisation". But downloading takes some time...

I prefer physical for a couple of reasons.. The main one is conductibility, but also the fact that some movies are either near-impossible to find on streaming services, and even when they are, they risk being pulled any given day. There are services to buy digital movies like Vudu, but those are usually right at or more expensive than you can get the Blu-Ray from a service like eBay. And often times the quality is actually better on the Blu-Ray, not to mention the special features that you can rarely get digitally. The good news is that collectors like us are keeping the hobby alive, so I see physical releases continuing into the near future, even if they slow down a bit. Heck, Vinyls are even becoming popular again.

computerkid1416 Physical media are probably becoming the new laserdisc. -Prices for each title will go up to, but at least have more content. -Players will become more expensive. -Covers will become more than just your standard little casing. They'll be boxsets, designed with distinctive each time. And eventually production of physical media will cease to exist.

@@pHD77 The number of streaming services are increasing as are the prices of each streaming platform The biggest streaming service. ,Vudu, is shutting down and streaming services owned by Criterion, TCM and others have already fizzled out. I had no power for 5 days after a bad storm knocked down a pole on my block. We had no cable/internet either. Even when power came back, we still waited 2 days for the cable company to repair their wires..... we used a generator to run the fridge and tv/Blu-ray player. All we had was our PHYSICAL media. My Netflix subscription was completely useless while costing me $18 a month!!! I will never stop collecting physical media! It’s the only way to truly OWN the thing you pay for.

While you have a valid point about waiting for physical media to load, depending on your streaming player, you've still got to go through three menus to get to Netflix (or whatever streaming service), wait for the Netflix icons to load, and then wait for it to load to start playing. And if the connection is slow, it's going to pause in the middle of the movie anyway. Barf.

Streaming media feels far less personal and far more disposable to me. I’m of the opinion that if I spend money on a film (or music) I’m going to ensure I consume the media. With Netflix and Spotify, everything is more disposable. Not instantly into the album you’re listening to? Fine - you didn’t pay for it, only the monthly subscription. Find something else, you might enjoy it more. And that to me is the biggest issue with streaming media I personally have. There is no monetary outlay on the media people watch now apart from the subscription, so everything is far more disposable as opposed to the days when we went out and picked a single movie from Blockbusters on a Friday night, or when we went into the local HMV and brought an album. We knew we had invested time and money into our media consumption, so to dismiss the music and films we consumed then had more a financial repercussion. And because of that, it meant we were more invested instead of having a niggling feeling at the back of our head that we can click off and find something else immediately.

The only con of physical media is finding the space to store them. And for releases with very small demand, the physical media used are often DVD-R/Blu Ray-R, which could possibly deteriorate in the future and even become unplayable(?), unlike proper factory-pressed discs.. :(

In my opinion here's pros and cons on digital and physical. Pros on digital. You can get it right away instead of waiting for it to be shipped to you or picking it up in a store. Not worry about scratches or losing it. Cons on digital If your wifi is slow it will be buffering or just loading all the time. If your wifi is down you won't be able to watch it. Pros on physical media You could own it. You don't have to worry about internet problems or buffering. Cons on physical media You can scratch it by watching the movie or show many times. You can lose it. You can run out of storage on shelves. Your DVD/ Blu Ray player can mess up.

Very interesting video. I think downloads / streaming will become a standard in the future. The only thing that isn’t clear to me is: What service will it be? After VHS was over and out, it was replaced by dvd and later Blu ray. That’s easy. One standard supported by all brands. But what will the future of streaming / downloads look like? Will it be iTunes? Will it be Netflix? KZfaq? Nobody can tell me wich direction it goes. I started collecting movies on iTunes, but it doesn’t work anymore on older hardware. I don’t watch enough movies to subscribe to a streaming service and have no idea what I have to choose after dvd.

So now I have a crap load of both, duplicate copies of a bunch of them and guess what 4k dvds have been introduced! WTF! I'm done and now I just use VUDU. Been buying from them for a couple of years and it's pretty great. Also it's helping keep the peace with my wife who just loves shelves and shelves of movies all over the living room and spare rooms. physical media is not dying. Actually this era is the greatest era when it comes to physical media. You can purchase a film in 4k and get a digital copy, blu ray copy, and 4k copy. That's 3 versions of the same movie. That's insane. And it will pretty much last your entire life unless you lose the movies and lose access to whatever app you have the digital movie installed under. It has been 2 years since I started collecting movies and it feels like the 80s and 90s all over again. Collecting my favorite movies and watching them. It feels like i'm watching them for the first time. Cause now i'm noticing stuff in the movies I did not notice on vhs or dvd on a crt tv. Anyone who says physical media is dying don't know what their talking about. In the next couple of months The Running Man, Twin Peaks, Twins, Big Trouble in Little China, Back to the Future, and Beverly Hills Cop Trilogy will all be coming to blu ray or 4k steelbook. And I will be buying all of them. Maybe physical media is dying for new movies. Because 90 % of the films are mediocre and are not worth buying physical copies. How many superhero movies can a person possibly watch b4 getting burned out. Do u guys think 40 years from now. Their will be a large library of movies that would be worth going back to watch like how we do with the terminator, back to the future, die hard, the predator and etc. Movies in todays era do not hold their value.

What I miss most is good TV channels and their movie shows. PBS and especially TVO here in Ontario had a great midnight show called Saturday Night At The Movies. They would show classics to modern foreign films, and would prologue them with interesting trivia, why they're unique, controversy it created, etc. So it was like going to a friends house that's really into movies and learning. Not that I liked all the movies shown, but I appreciated them for their inventiveness and joy they may give to others. With Netflix and all now, there's nothing to preface the movie other than the selling synopsis of Action, Comedy, Drama, etc. and a brief plot at best. Thankfully for YT and folks like you Niki, I get a more in depth look at what I may find interesting and/or what to avoid. The packaging is getting insane too, I agree. I miss the DVD's with a little chapter card or pamphlet inside a easy to open clam shell case. Then this crappy cardboard casing and reduced plastic method to presumably reduce excess and weight for shipping and stocking. But actually doubling the impact with DVD's, Blu-Ray, and 4k all being delivered at once now. I will give kudos to "premium blu-rays" from Korea et al. They really put effort into their releases, be they classics like 2001, or sleepers like Her. Proud to own and display those. But honestly, YT here is my starting point. If you or others recommend a movie, I may check out the trailer here or on IMDB. If I think it maybe interesting to sit down with, I'll either borrow it from the library, or buy a cheap DVD of it on Amazon or 2nd hand. And if I really love the movie after, I'll try and score a premium BD or Criterion DVD of it and turn in the DVD to a store or a friend. Not at all intrigued by Netflix really, other than Bong Joon Ho. And yes, I got Okja on DVD now too. Don't ask me how, but it's out there. :)

A big check for Blu-Ray in the pros column: adequate video quality with minimal compression. Especially once you have a 4K TV, there’s nothing nastier than your streamed 4K HDR movie suddenly becoming a 480p sub-DVD quality HDR movie, stretches across a 4K screen.

I think part of the collection is somehow exclusive packing and cool menus. If not just buy some pirate DVDs and blu ray to have simple menus and cheap packing.

Physical media is nice to have Internet in your area goes down. We have the movie Groundhog Day on dvd because for some reason Netflix will carry the movie until it gets close to that holiday and they remove it for some reason.

Superior picture/audio quality and bonus features. That's worth the 2 minute load time for me. That's also why people who wanted quality went with Laser Disc over VHS back in the day. More inconvenient to flip the disc, but better on everything else.

Nothing keep me away from experiencing my own little going to block buster experience when I go To my local library and then local gas station or grocery and buy popcorn and candy If I wanted to watch every show/movie I’m interested in. It would cost $50 a month, with hbo Hulu and Netflix, also I don’t watch tv enough to pay for all that.

I agree with you about the tedious nature of blu rays, and definitely agree the menus are often times stupid in that they spoil the movie by showing key scenes. Who thought that was a good idea? But I will always choose physical media and support it 100%. Digital may take over at some point in time but while physical media exists I will continue to support it.

I agree that disc menus are problematic, especially on standard Bluray, but 4K alleviates some of those issues, and the increase in video and audio quality, as well as being able to have it as a collectors item are worth it

I tend to only buy blu rays if I’m a big fan such as the mcu or Star Wars or if they are meant to be good and aren’t on Netflix/amazon prime, which isn’t much because I live in the UK

1:05 II really miss the bonus material. Although Amazon Prime, because I think John Wick chapter 2 had included the bonus material or is, there was an extra file that lasted two to three hours about behind-the-scenes or making-of. That was pretty cool and you didn't have to pay anything extra. You don't even have the opportunity to get from the bonus material, even if you want to pay for it. I don't have that much money so I can't buy a blu-ray or uhd that often, but where I really like the film like John Wick or where I'm a fan of like the old Star Trek films 1 to 10, I bought the box so I would have all the bonus materials.

0:42 I've already read several articles and newspaper articles that even if you get everything providers that exist have a subscription for it, i.e. Netflix, Disney, Amazon Prime, Hugo, Paramount, and so on and so forth, you would only have 5% of all films and series ever produced. Which is a pretty weak selection and such series as Band of Brothers or the wire or special films can never be found on the streaming platform. And there are even many films and series that you can't even buy on Amazon or iTunes and you can't find them physically on Amazon or even on Ebay, perhaps to bid on them. And then sometimes there's just no other option than downloading them from any site on the internet.

Streaming is more convenient, but I personally love having physical things that I can hold in my hand, also it doesn't feel like you actually own something unless you can hold it in your hand and do whatever you want with it, I also might be the only person who doesn't mind weird packaging.
