The tree is called a Banyan tree and yes it's native to India more or less. The branches grow roots which on reaching ground develop into new trees and so on. One tree can literally grow into a forest in the later years. They are very beautiful in the day but grotesquely haunting at night. Almost every village had a haunted banyan tree story.
