That's because Janeway IS a crazy monster - she just can't show this to the crew, so like a good sociopath she finds other ways of living out her fantasies. Like "killing" holodeck-creatures ... Oh man, i wish this whole perception filter-problem would have even given Mr. Irish boytoy the ability to remember his wife and her sudden disappearance ... Would have been hilarious if he confronted Janeway about that too.

Who says they became sentient in this episode? They were still relatively simple simulations unlike the Doctor, all that stopped working was the filter that stopped them from reacting to things outside their program. Which made this even worse, because with Moriarty and so on you had real sentient AI - but these guys are not, so who cares about the problems. Oh, i forgot: "They might not be real, but our feelings for them are!" Yes, that makes it better ...
@lostbutfreesoul

@@lordmontymord8701 They perceive events that occur outside of the program being run, interact with each other behind the scenes to conspire, interact with the ship itself in ways that damage it, and many other things that where considered unique to one Professor Moriarty, Fontaine, the Dr. and a handful of other Holograms written with specific 'Sentence Code' as part of the character. Without that Sentence Code, and it really is the thing just go read Fontaine's page, these characters have as much understanding of the world around them as any Non-Player Character I run in an of my fantasy game. The moment those N.P.C's start interacting with the meta game that the players are using to create a story... fourth wall breaking... you have to explain why to the people behind the screens and not just their fictional characters. The writers for Star Trek long gave up on trying to do that because it is a lot harder to think like a computer program then most people give credit for. Take the wheel for a prime example: A N.P.C. would not be aware of the reset to the program, no memory of the tire being broken exists after you reset it out of reality. No one will ask about the vehicle that crashed because it is no longer relevant to the plot. All of those characters would have no memory period, because that requires computing power that is simulated by much more simple processes in such minor characters. Once one of those character walks through a door they will vanish, and the backstory of what the non-player character was doing would pop into existence only when it became relevant to the players sometime in the future plot. Holodecks do the same thing, but writers seem to have decided that would be boring! Cause it really would be, imagine what Fontaine would be like without the Sentience Code written into him....

The stupid holonovel was even supposed to get more screentime as a mystery adventure for Janeway (the whole "my wife is dead, lets not talk about her" and "DO NEVER GO INTO THIS ROOM"-thing). I think it was Jeri Taylors idea like so many bad things related to Janeway. She was obsessed with it. But other people had to explain to her that most Trek-fans would not appreciate a storyline about a Victorian era holonovel, where we only see Janeway solving a mystery thats even fictional in-universe. Holodeck malfunctions, as bad as they are, create at least a little bit of tension - this ain't. Sometimes you have to wonder how these people find a job ...

I look forward to seeing Allison tackle Fair Haven, since the writers show that on top of the normal science stuff they know jack about, they know jack about religion too since the Doctor, playing a Catholic priest is pretty blasé about a guy confessing that he's broken the fifth commandment again... meaning he's murdered someone and this isn't the first time. Also, got love how stupid Harry is in this ep. He wasted a replicator ration that could have been used to get food not made by Neelix's disgusting hands to get real flowers for a holographic girl. He could have just had the holodeck make holographic flowers for her, but he instead did the 24th century version of giving a box of chocolates to a blowup doll.

Ah I agree, the craic aside Id say these voyager episodes are industrial cringe. The 18th c is "the age of enlightenment," when Dublin was the 6th biggest city in a Europe that was leaping ahead in technology. The second city of the British Empire in a time when that empire was lead militarily and then politically by an Irish person. Our people were among the most privilaved of the intelligencia of the day and nothing like this atomic level cringe.

I must confess a sneaking fondness for the "Data plays Sherlock Holmes" Holodeck episodes of TNG, but in general I always felt like it was the writer's way of either phoning it in (Oh no the safety protocols broke for the sixth time this week!) or giving the actors something to do not involving body-length spandex. I don't begrudge any of the Trek shows either of those things, but a Q or a Borg episode they were not.

It’s Ireland in the early 20th century, btw. It’s supposed to be set around the same time as Joyce’s “Ulysses”. Just not in Dublin. I know I’m going to come off as weird, but I just finished watching all of “Voyager” (yesterday afternoon, in fact), and I really enjoyed the Fair Haven episodes. The whole point was that the ship was passing through a featureless expanse and the crew needed something to divert them, so Janeway decided to have Tom keep the program running 24/7. The holograms attaining self-awareness in this episode was part of a series-length exploration of holographic sentience. The longer the show ran, the more they came to recognise that the Doctor was less unique than he first appeared. They not only ran into (and accidentally created) more self-aware holograms, they even met full on photonic life forms! Sure, the accents are silly (except for Janeway’s BF. He was real) and the stakes are low, but these were genuinely fun episodes. My favourite holodeck episode is still “Bride of Chaotica”, though!

While you were pulling on some of the inconsistent threads in this episode (e.g. Janeway calling to purge the town then 8 minutes later insisting on saving it no matter what etc.) you exposed one of the underlying flaws of voyager: The characters frequently did things that were inconsistent, contradictory, or flatly 'out of character' for them. One of the worst offenders that comes to mind is Paris turning in to an eco-terrorist for an episode because that's what the script needed. Janeway also seemed to swerve wildly from episode to episode and scene to scene. Mulgrew had the range to do it, but watching two episodes in a row can give you whiplash.

Exactly. Well that, and the possibly horrific stuff that gets glossed over or shown as “good actually”. Like being so desperate to get home that they would give the Borg a way to defeat the only other lifeform to consistently keep them on their heels. Then again, Enterprise had episodes like that too. They both had so much cool potential but consistently under utilized it.

This episode drove me up the wall. Voyager had exactly TWO holodecks. For a crew of 150. "Sorry, Ensign What's-Your-Face. Darth Arachnia has decreed that one of the only two holodecks on the entire ship is now going to run a program of a quaint 1800s Irish town 24/7. If you don't feel like roleplaying during a time when people regularly died of cholera, you'll just have to wait in line for the other holodeck. Oops! Turns out Fairhaven is glitching because we've been unwisely running it 24/7. We need to use the other holodeck to fix it so the Supreme doesn't have to delete her Irish boyfriend hologram."

Voyager could have done interesting with the hollow episodes. Because the premise of the show was them being cut off from resources, the hollow deck could have only had a limited number of programmes all of which the crew started as hating, but as time progresses the crew came to appreciate them as a break from the endless void! Just a thought

One of many wasted potential ideas on that series. I like ST:Voyager, but the writers did virtually nothing with the core premise of the show. ST:V is a Star Trek show that should have been heavy on continuity, like having the ship become progressively damaged and "Frankensteined" with random parts throughout the series. Hell, ST:Enterpise did a much better job at illustrating the ship stuck in the great expanse without assistance.
@lostbutfreesoul

Problem with this thought - Can you fit it into a single episode, maybe a two part? It is the curse of episodic writing and board of directors... I joke a lot at the writers expense but it is more environmental. Great idea though, and a perfect excuse or the dreaded 'Sudden Sentence Code Development' storyline to pop up from time to time... and the ship having to deal with the consequences of that. I like to imagine half the crew being holographic by the end of the trip home, as a faction had taken over the ship but the situation still meant joining the Federation was the best bet for survival. Descendants of the original crew bring a seriously battered and damaged ship back to port... but we instead got a single captain with insane luck and time bending skills!

I remember the Holonovel one. Largely because the boy playing the boy in the story was a really good actor, and better than most of the grown ups around him. Had forgotten the french bar but it is coming back now. But Fair Haven was always one of those things I could never forget. No matter how much I wanted to. Here's a thought: what if Voyager is actually the Baywatch characters playing a virtual reality science fiction game? Janeway is Stephanie. Paris is Cody. And Harry is of course Eddie. I could go on. Just like Baywatch, Voyager did forget everything usually by the next episode, so Janeways concern here was a bit pointless.
