Star Wars has been very disappointing under Disney. Recently as a long time Star Wars fan I have become increasingly frustrated with the current state of Star Wars. After the disappointment of the Sequel Trilogy, Book of Boba Fett and Obi-Wan Kenobi, things have been seemingly getting worse. Although shows like The Mandalorian and Andor have been great, it still doesn't make up for how Lucasfilm has handled Star Wars lately. The entire IP has become an unfocused mess, with seemingly more of the same on the way. We take a deep dive into Disney's Star Wars reign and dive deep in this Star Wars Video Essay!

Honestly, I'd say the force awakens was the real start to the downfall. Because in episode six the empire was defeated and luke was to build a new jedi order. TFA just hit the reset button and brought back the empire and destroyed the new republic and we didn't see luke's new jedi order. Fans accepted it, because it was the first time in over ten years a new star wars movie came out and it was a nostalgia trip and we fell for it. The last jedi was more of a wake up call if anything.

My thoughts exactly. TFA was not a good story. It was a rehash, it has no world building, it disrespected Han, Luke and Leia AND Chewie, the new characters were just not that good at all, and it relied too much on sequelbait threads to get people hooked in.

It was ok, in a vacuum. I had my issues with it and didn’t think it was anything special. What they did to Han should have been an even bigger red flag than it was. The second film really showed something was wrong. I never even saw Rise because I knew it was probably going to be an unmitigated disaster - lo and behold it was exactly that and even worse than I would have expected per it’s reputation.

Yeah, I feel like TLJ gets a lot of flak for problems that TFA created. Fans were so enamored with nostalgia and loved the marvel style quippy humor that they didn't stop to critically think about what The Force Awakens was setting up.

I think the best way to ease people back into Star Wars wouldn't have been to rehash New Hope, but to show us Luke and his new order, the new republic, and Leia and Han as a happy couple. Destroying all of that off screen isn't exactly easing anyone in. Especially with a tagline like "Luke Skywalker has vanished"

Force Awakens feels like a very shallow attempt to appease those who didn't like the prequals. So gone was the space politics, complicated plots, or much world exploration, and instead they just made something trying to mimic ANH.

There's absolutely nothing defendable about how Disney treated Star Wars IP. Even J.J. Abrams and some actors admitted there was absolutely no plan for the three movies when they started shooting the sequel trilogy and Disney CEO Bob Iger said the main thing they focused while doing Episode 7 was copying the original movie. There was absolutely no creative vision. They treated the IP as cash cow ready to milk as much as possible.

Which proves that the downfall of the franchise started with episode 7 and not with 8 and 9. Even episode 7 is a complete shitshow and should be acknowledged as such. It may be slightly less shitty than its two followers buts its still a bad star wars movie and objectively a bad movie in general. The story is garbage, consistent characters do not really exist. There are lists of some character trades but no real characters. Their basic motivations change every 15 Minutes. The whole plot is completely unrecognizable. The story arc moakes no sense. Its a very bad copy of A New Hope. Thats it....

Gotta reboot stars sequels how micheal Meyers did it... like how halloween 2018 ignores all sequels and picks up its story 40 years in future. For star wars. Scrap new trilogy. Sequel trilogy is a dead end and Disney knows it. Nobody will give a shit and pay to see what the hell Ray, Finn, Poe, Rose etc doing after Episode 9. Also some actors openly said they'll never do another Star Wars movie because they know the movies they starred turned into a shitshow and want no involvement anymore. The best option for moving forward beyond Return of the Jedi is completely ignore sequel trilogy like The Mandalorian did and erase them from continuation.

If only there were more. We're missing so many genres. I really miss Lucasarts, the games may not have been very expansive, but they had great ideas and execution. Empire at War and Jedi Academy remain installed forvever for how much fun they offer for almost no install size. They were light on story, but explored gameplay concepts that were ridiculously fun and intricate. Force powers and saber combat in Jedi Academy are still some of my favorite. And while Fallen Order may look very pretty and have smooth, flowing gameplay, being able to turn a stormtrooper into a pile of body parts just by turning on my lightsaber next to them is a satisfying feeling worth the bare minimum graphics to convey the process.
@Xanlet
@Xanlet Жыл бұрын
When Rey mind controlled a storm trooper when she didn't even fully believe the force was real yet, and then the first time she turned on a light saber beat someone who had trained their whole life, that was when I knew Disney Star Wars was bad. Throw in Fin gunning down his squad mates in glee just a few scenes after being too traumatized by combat to even shoot his blaster, and it's clear as day. TFA was a bad movie, but if you got carried away with the cultural hype it's understandable. It just means you have difficulty independently judging a film and instead use popular opinion in lieu of your own.

Disney wants mindless, unquestioning, consumption of assembly line spectacle. The old fandom would have appreciated Andor, but they're gone now. I have to disagree with the TFA. It was honestly very overrated, and all the "promises" were hollow upon release. Much of the problems we have with the later Sequels really started in TFA. Rey being a Mary Sue, Finn being underutilized, Ren being a wimpy villain, wasting Legacy characters and overblown with Nostalgia. The "love" it got in 2015 was fake and blind. It was loved more to spite George Lucas and the Prequels. Nearly every review praising it always took unnecessary pot shots at George Lucas or the Prequels that it made me cringe. TLJ only made people realize how shit TFA really is. In my opinion, TFA was truly where SW began to fall apart. TLJ was just a wakeup call to how crap it was.

I'm still a bit sore on how the new "canon" treated Luke and turned him into a bitter hermit. In Legends, while he wasn't perfect, he matured over time and the lessons he learned about the Force shaped the new Jedi Order. Seeing Luke act like in BoBF hurts especially when he made Grogu choose between becoming a Jedi and his foster father. Heck, he would've encouraged Grogu to spend more time with Din before continuing his training as a Padawan because for Legends Luke, attachment is something you must treasure but also be mindful of.

Luke is someone who became a Jedi precisely because he was more hopeful, more loving, and more emotionally present than the Jedi before. That’s why he’s able to save Darth Vader. Luke was a symbol of hope like tyr a hero to darth vaders bloodthirsty odin, this need for something to believe in even dates back to the ancients. it was a masterclass on principles and i think THAT is what they really want to see removed ultimately because that’s how you create confusion. We’re no different as societies as they were 3000 years ago. Wether it was mythos or made up tales i think this is what mr jrr tolkien was trying to recreate as well. Every piece of entertainment media is mind numbingly empty and superficial and i see right through it. You think it doesn’t matter but it does, everything matters. Kids look up to these creeps and it breaks my heart because i know some of them like me go to entertainment to escape their daily trouble and they can’t even do that anymore. The worst thing that can happen to Star Wars has already happened: audience apathy. Most people simply don’t care anymore, and once you lose that momentum and fan passion, it is _incredibly_ difficult to regain it. I have absolutely zero interest in Star Wars under Disney’s purview. None. It’s dead to me because not only is it creatively bankrupt and incompetently executed, it represents nothing I adore about the property. For as bad as the prequels were in execution, at least the soul of the IP was there. At least it was about the universe, characters, mythology, and journey. About the trials and triumphs. Now, it’s all about treating it like a commodity and shell to cash in on. Show after show after show barfed up from the Mickey Mouse factory assembly line to sell tickets and fill rides. _This is not what people want, or why we were fans._ The absolute cluelessness of Disney and those managing Lucasfilm is remarkable to witness. I’m only immensely grateful that we have the three (unaltered) OT films, and they can never be taken away from us. I will treasure and remain incredibly thankful for those brilliant visions by people who strived to tell us wonderful stories that spoke to fundamental human truths and values, and who put commercial considerations in the background. Do it to tell us great stories, and the money will pour in. Do it for the money, and you will fail.

Relagated Luke to an island, leia to a failed general, and Han back to his smuggling ways. Turned a rebellion that won back into a small pack of "resistance" It also narrowed the world down again to just Skywalkers and recloned Vader and the empire in Kylo and the first order. I don't know why so many people fail to see how terrible of a setup TFA was for the rest of the sequels" And it sums it up perfectly most of the problems with sequels IMO.

I doubt Andor had a higher budget then Obi-wan. I think it really just came down to the competence of the people making it. Like, Andor used real sets, so a lot of the quality is due to the people who found the places to shoot ("location scouters" is their actual title, IIRC). Hiring a good location scouter probably doesn't cost much more then hiring a bad one, but if Tony Gilroy knows good location scouters then that will play into how good the final product is. At the end of the day, just hiring the right people has more to do with a quality final product then hiring a *lot* of people - just look at Rings of Power, they spent billions and it still *looks* cheap. They spent, like tens of millions of dollars on an ocean set so they could make a 'shipping' pun in the final episode, lmao.

The idea was to start fresh and “purge” everything instead of going through each book and deciding on cannon status (because damn there was some dumb shit) which would be easier to keep things “cannon”. Unfortunately for some dumb reason they never had an overarching story in mind when creating the sequels, possibly to prevent leaks. This lead to TFA which while fun it’s also full of mystery boxes full of disappointment. TLJ was then a deconstruction of Star Wars and was supposed to build it back up but it was extremely flawed in its deconstruction as it misunderstood so much about the universe both cannon and philosophy. Finally TRoS was doomed from the start, TLJ train wreck threw out everything people were interested in from TFA leaving nothing exciting or satisfying for the trilogy to end on.

Imagine how much better things would have been if they adapted Timothy Zahn's Thrawn Trilogy for the sequels, eventually following them up with the Dark Empire and Yuuzhan Vong. It's sad how so many characters like Kyle Katarn, Mara Jade, Jacen and Jaina Solo, and so many stories will never see the big screen when they were all right there. Disney just chose to ignore them, made them all non-canon, for the purpose of telling their story that was 1/2 nostalgia and rehashing the og trilogy and 1/2 no plan and making it up as they went along. Say what you will about Lucas' prequel movies, at least he HAD a plan!

Grogu shoulf have been kept out of the picture for more time with Luke. This would have sparked the interest more in him. But instead Disney just thinks on quick cash grab. It also usubverts the relationship with Mando a bit. Because at the end of Season 2, Grogu realised that the Mandalorian loves him and he (Grogu) loves Mando. But he can let him go and does not need to be near him all the time. Knowing someone loves you is enough and was perfect fot him to become a jedi. A jedi as he should be. but now it is a regress.

If anything I'd bet good money against it... but it made me realize there's actually room in this franchise for thoughtful storytelling - and fans out there who are interested in and appreciate such content. That's good enough for me tbh - I was sure star wars was a doomed IP and had checked out of this entire scene years ago. shit, I wouldn't even be commenting here were it not for Andor, that's how little I care about star wars otherwise.

People only disrespected the prequels because they overused CGI, had a couple annoying characters, and a bad script. It’s been praised recently because people actually have gone back and realized the heart, soul, and world development that takes place in the prequels.

The nostalgia for Force Awakens was powerful at the time, but it's pretty much gone now This is what happens when you make a film that only relies on nostalgia to draw in its audience Also kind of ironic how Abrams wanted the film to mark a return back to the OT style of Star Wars when the film is littered with CGI and has marvel style humour. It couldn't be further from what Star Wars actually is.

The Force Awakens was the nostalgia trip Star Wars badly needed after the Prequels were so terrible and was good enough on it's own merits. @@immortalfrieza Disagree. Force Awakens had some of the most shallow worldbuilding I've seen in any film, and that set up all of the problems in the rest of the sequel trilogy. @immortalfrieza
@immortalfrieza Жыл бұрын
@@Onezy05 The Force Awakens showed Star Wars fans that Star Wars was actually going to BE Star Wars again. TFA didn't need much world building because the OT had already long since done most of the work. All TFA needed to do was teach us about and develop the characters and it did it. One of the problems with the prequel trilogy was all the long scenes of nothing actually happening while everybody stood around spouting unnecessary exposition for the sake of "world building" in a galaxy that everybody knew was going to drastically change and make nearly all of it irrelevant by the OT anyway, rather than like the Sequel Trilogy trusting that the audience had brains and thus didn't need every last detail spoon fed to them. The sole problem with the Sequel Trilogy was the "fans" that hated on The Last Jedi for no good reason, leading to Disney actually listening and acting like TLJ never happened with Rise of Skywalker. Nearly everything wrong with Rise of Skywalker can be traced directly back to doing everything possible to pretend TLJ didn't happen. Up until Rise of Skywalker the whole trilogy was perfectly set up to rival if not exceed the Original Trilogy.

@Onezy05 Жыл бұрын
@@immortalfrieza All of that 'unecessary exposition' was necessary for telling the story of how the Republic became the Empire in the first place lol. Everything with the Trade Federation, Clone Wars, and political scenes set the groundwork for why the Republic became the Empire and how the Jedi were dispatched of. It builds a world that's about to be torn down and explains why that world and it's systems fail. Everyone goes on about how TFA FEELS like the OT when what they're really saying is that they just like the return of the familiar aesthetics. The humour is unlike anything in the OT, there are CG effects galore, and the camerawork is a far cry from anything that came before on a consistent level. All that's familiar is the OG cast and the surface level aesthetics. By just retreading the familiar aesthetics of the OT, Abrams ended up regressing the situation from how it was left in ROTJ. He wanted to make Han Solo the familiar smuggler we first met in ANH instead of progressing the character from where he was last left off. But in doing so, Abrams made Han a loser who's lost all of his achievements and character progression from the OT .... off screen! Is the First Order still the same entity as the Empire? If so, how has it amassed more resources to create the monstrously overpowered Death Star 3.0? Why didn't the rebuilt Republic stop them? What even is the new Republic like? Where did Snoke come from? Why is Finn the only Stormtrooper to defect? What's the mystery behind Rey? Why did Luke seclude himself on an island when the galaxy was in its deepest peril.... again? These were all questions TFA set up that hooked people on at first. The potential for a good story was there because.... uhhh ... I don't know, we'd find out what the real story was about in the next one! Rian Johnson was kind of written into a corner in this regard and had to manufacture artificial and inorganic solutions to these mysteries. Yeah, he chose to make those crappy decisions (albeit with some great cinematography and actually innovative ideas) but TFA was what wrote him into a corner in the first place

The biggest issue is there was zero story for the three episodes that Disney did. All of the movies before this had some type of over arching plan for what things should look like. Yes, were there things that change like I really doubt that Princess Leia was going to be Luke's sister when they wrote the first two movies (If so that would be kind of sick). Still the over all concepts of things like what the Emperor was, what Vader was seemed to flow. The whole "I am you father" line worked even with the first movie saying that Vader killed his father. In these three movies you had very lazy writing like how this scraper is an ace pilot. Yes she know all of the pieces and parts and likely read or watched things like manuals for the equipment she was dealing with. But to fly a ship and not just a normal ship. Then there were so many questions best left for a later time it was crazy. Then to have the second movie totally go off the rails with the low speed space chase and everything else that did and did not happen this thing was a mess. And then end on the Dagger that shows the place the crashed Death Star chamber is that was created long before the thing was destroyed. I am sorry even cash cows need to be treated humanely where the heck is PETA when you need them.

I was about to experience my first Star Wars movie in theaters, I went with some of my family members who loved the saga, we loved the movie, but even back then I noticed the similarities with Episode 4, I loved seeing the old protagonists although I would have liked to see them all together. I rewatched the movie like 3 times. I really loved experiencing Rogue One at theaters and I regret that I didn't watched it on 3D, It was amazing to see Darth Vader for the first time on the big screen, I watched it another 4 times. When Episode 8 was released, most of my partners said that it was bad, I was able to notice some details that bothered many but I didn't hate the movie, but the moment when Luke threw Anakin's saber I was like "what?" while some of the audience laughed, I only rewatched it once, the film got worse the more I thought about it and more with each review and analysis that I saw on the internet, even if liked some aspects like Kylo and Rey fighting with Snoke's guards or Luke and Leia's last scene (hands down best moment in the film). I went to the Solo movie with my Great-Uncle who also likes the saga and we enjoyed it, I only rewatched it once showing it to my Mom who didn't got to see the movie. When episode 9 came around I was no longer excited for a new Star Wars film, there was no salvation, my family had sent me the money to watch it but I didn't know what to do, I thought about not watching it but I did, the theater I went to was almost empty compared to the first two, Episode 9 is indefensible and cannot even stand as a movie on its own. I liked The Mandalorian and I didn't expect it to be very successful, to this point I don't know if I still consider myself a Star Wars fan, I feel like I already know what I needed to know, I still like to watch the original 6 movies from time to time and I love the score by John Williams YEAH even in the sequels. It's sad to see the state Star Wars is in now since it changed filmmaking forever, to the point that if it weren't for Industrial Light & Magic many sci-fi and fantasy movies wouldn't have been possible.

You are a Star Wars fan. 1-6 IS Star Wars, and everything after, good or bad, is fanfiction. Personally, despite being a mega-SW fan, I'm starting to think we're getting too much of this fan fction

@@shadow_king12344 Really? Cuz that's how I see it. Anything Disney Star Wars with no Lucas involvement, no matter how much I like it, I see as fan fiction. In many cases it is GOOD fan fiction. SW had a good end with 6 episodes, and everything after is an addition, not a representation of SW as a whole. Does that explain it better?

18:03 No you see that's an excellent point because I'm guilty of that too, but I'd like to add my own thoughts to that; I've always said that box office cannot and should not be the metric for a film's success, not entirely at least. Because every film and series that comes out is shrouded in the high of the event, but whether or not it still maintains the effects of that high long after it's worn off should be the true metric. For example, I walked out of Endgame thinking it was the greatest thing I'd ever seen and couldn't even watch another movie for several days because what's the point? When the high wore off I realized it wasn't all that great. It was still really good, but not as well compared to Infinity War.

I personally think the "return of palpatine" was inevitable in the sequels, Disney was going to be doing this plot one way or another. I still think they should've done that in the force awakens and not in the last movie in the trilogy.

When The Mandalorian released i was sure Disney was gonna begin to realise that what we need is some creativity, and considering it draws so much inspiration from the western genre i was convinced we was gonna get some more genre based movies/tv shows set in the star wars universe, like an action packed buddy cop movie or a phsycological crime thriller or something.

It wasnt just the genre, it was also the way they set up the story. The second season (and Boba Fett) showed how it could fail. Instead of a focus on a persistent story that builds on previous ones its far more focused on telling a single story in a single episode, with a tiny bit of overarching story. You could see that they build up a threat, and then because they were almost out of runtime for the episode all the bad guys instantly evaporate. You could see the corporate hand basically saying “but we want to build a bunch of shows and we dont want to put a lot of money and effort in the story so you are going to try out if this works”. Even though they just showed what works: make an overall consistent and compelling story that fits with the rest of the canon for the most part.
