Honestly, I'd say the force awakens was the real start to the downfall. Because in episode six the empire was defeated and luke was to build a new jedi order. TFA just hit the reset button and brought back the empire and destroyed the new republic and we didn't see luke's new jedi order. Fans accepted it, because it was the first time in over ten years a new star wars movie came out and it was a nostalgia trip and we fell for it. The last jedi was more of a wake up call if anything.

I remember seeing a full plot leak for the rise of skywalker before it came out, and I thought to myself "wow, this can't be real, this is worse than fan-fiction. if the movie is like this I don't even want to see it." And then I went to the theaters and the leak was accurate word for word, and that's when I gave up on disney star wars

I think the best way to ease people back into Star Wars wouldn't have been to rehash New Hope, but to show us Luke and his new order, the new republic, and Leia and Han as a happy couple. Destroying all of that off screen isn't exactly easing anyone in. Especially with a tagline like "Luke Skywalker has vanished"

There's absolutely nothing defendable about how Disney treated Star Wars IP. Even J.J. Abrams and some actors admitted there was absolutely no plan for the three movies when they started shooting the sequel trilogy and Disney CEO Bob Iger said the main thing they focused while doing Episode 7 was copying the original movie. There was absolutely no creative vision. They treated the IP as cash cow ready to milk as much as possible.

When Rey mind controlled a storm trooper when she didn't even fully believe the force was real yet, and then the first time she turned on a light saber beat someone who had trained their whole life, that was when I knew Disney Star Wars was bad. Throw in Fin gunning down his squad mates in glee just a few scenes after being too traumatized by combat to even shoot his blaster, and it's clear as day. TFA was a bad movie, but if you got carried away with the cultural hype it's understandable. It just means you have difficulty independently judging a film and instead use popular opinion in lieu of your own.

In my mind, there's either two choices who can go down to save Star Wars. Either go down the Old Republic route as you said, or go another route for a new story to follow after ROTJ (essentially a new sequel trilogy, one that builds upon George's work. )

Disney has consistently attacked the thinking fans, the ones who value character development, storytelling, continuity and the lore of the Star Wars universe. Disney wants mindless, unquestioning, consumption of assembly line spectacle. The old fandom would have appreciated Andor, but they're gone now. Andor is failing because the new "fans" don't have the patience or passion to sit through five minutes without an action sequence, a bad joke or a cameo. So, there's your future of Star Wars.

I could never begin to put into words how painful it is that the passion I once had for Star Wars has now been replaced with cold indifference; and I hold Disney ENTIRELY responsible.

The sad fact is that Lucas original plan for the sequel trilogy was having Darth Maul as a terrorist leader, adapting characters from the EU/Legends and Clone Wars, a New Jedi Order and even exploring the origins of the Force and alternate dimensions. The ideas were fucking awesome. The Last Jedi was a franchise killer.

I wanted to see Obi working through everything. He went from broken to a wise mentor from 3 to 4. I wanted to see that! And why is he afraid of Vader? He whooped his ass so hard he needed permanent life support for the rest of his life!

I have to disagree with the TFA. It was honestly very overrated, and all the "promises" were hollow upon release. Much of the problems we have with the later Sequels really started in TFA. Rey being a Mary Sue, Finn being underutilized, Ren being a wimpy villain, wasting Legacy characters and overblown with Nostalgia. The "love" it got in 2015 was fake and blind. It was loved more to spite George Lucas and the Prequels. Nearly every review praising it always took unnecessary pot shots at George Lucas or the Prequels that it made me cringe. TLJ only made people realize how shit TFA really is. In my opinion, TFA was truly where SW began to fall apart. TLJ was just a wakeup call to how crap it was.

I'm still a bit sore on how the new "canon" treated Luke and turned him into a bitter hermit. In Legends, while he wasn't perfect, he matured over time and the lessons he learned about the Force shaped the new Jedi Order. Seeing Luke act like in BoBF hurts especially when he made Grogu choose between becoming a Jedi and his foster father. Heck, he would've encouraged Grogu to spend more time with Din before continuing his training as a Padawan because for Legends Luke, attachment is something you must treasure but also be mindful of.

George Lucas, mostly BY himself wrote 6 movies with a start and middle and an end. Yeah he had problems and yeah he had help in certain areas for the OT. But ONE guy with yellow notepads and 2B pencils made BETTER stories than anything Disney has put out in a decade. My 2¢

As a kid I watched the originals adnauseum. I still have movies that I will rewatch every few years because they are just that good. I tried several times to rewatch these new movies and I can't pass the 20 minute mark. As visually gorgeous as they are, they are sort of like those Kaleidoscope screen savers we had in the 90's, just good enough for background noise.

Star wars visions are the kinds of star wars movies we need there's several episodes in that show that could easily be their own movies or even trilogies specifically about the sith hunter Samurai. Such an interesting concept.

Whenever they said "we can't do better than Darth Vader, so we might as well turn that aspect into the new villain, not being able to live up to his grandfather", they clearly also said "we can do better than Luke, so we might as well turn that aspect into the new hero, being able to outshine Luke at every opportunity possible".

The saddest part is that in Legends, the entire story following ROTJ is written. But Disney chose to completely ignore it, and then in a last ditch effort, cherry picked the Emperor coming back from Dark Empire. I will never forgive Disney for robbing us of Jaina and Jacen Solo.

The fact that so so so many Lucasfilm films and projects and films have been cancelled are grounds alone for Kathleen's firing. This amount of cancelled projects just doesn't happen in any other studio

The sequels did irreparable damage to the franchise, because they are where everything that came before and is set in an earlier timeline ends up. Everything they write now is something that eventually leads you to a trilogy of disjointed messy wheel spins and convoluted technobabble punctuated with people telling you their feelings loudly and directly into the camera, while winking and making yo’ mama jokes.

The sad part about Andor is that it’s looking to be a case of too little, too late. It does deliver among the best plots of the various shows but no one cares.

The worst thing that can happen to Star Wars has already happened: audience apathy. Most people simply don’t care anymore, and once you lose that momentum and fan passion, it is _incredibly_ difficult to regain it. I have absolutely zero interest in Star Wars under Disney’s purview. None. It’s dead to me because not only is it creatively bankrupt and incompetently executed, it represents nothing I adore about the property. For as bad as the prequels were in execution, at least the soul of the IP was there. At least it was about the universe, characters, mythology, and journey. About the trials and triumphs. Now, it’s all about treating it like a commodity and shell to cash in on. Show after show after show barfed up from the Mickey Mouse factory assembly line to sell tickets and fill rides. _This is not what people want, or why we were fans._ The absolute cluelessness of Disney and those managing Lucasfilm is remarkable to witness. I’m only immensely grateful that we have the three (unaltered) OT films, and they can never be taken away from us. I will treasure and remain incredibly thankful for those brilliant visions by people who strived to tell us wonderful stories that spoke to fundamental human truths and values, and who put commercial considerations in the background. Do it to tell us great stories, and the money will pour in. Do it for the money, and you will fail.

I watched the first 2 episodes of Andor and stopped watching it. A month after i gave Andor a second try and boy, i was surprised. The later episodes really got me. I love slow stories. Andor is down to earth storytelling and it actually feels real. I love the show.

Honestly I’m super excited Andor is getting another season. It’s been one of the best Star Wars shows that have been released along with the mandolorian. Especially with the amount of good writing in that show. Also I’m fine with not having another trilogy. I just hope they stick with the shows for rn. If people are really calling andor boring and slow then In my mind if films like war for planet of the apes and lord of the rings had came out this year people would’ve called that boring too. I really loved andor, it was refreshing to see something different with in the star wars universe. Nah man Finn is interesting for the first 10 minutes of force awakens, when you still think he might have some kind of character arc and we might learn more about the years he spent being conditioned and trained, when your still thinking that those years might have an impact on how he acts around his friends and that it might make the process of trusting those friends harder on him… right up until he’s shooting down his own comrades like 2 minutes later because Poe is his new best friend and Finn is just the awkward comic relief now….

I remember when the Force Awakens came out, it were fever pitch excitement and although it had some flaws, people enjoyed it. I remember going to watch Rise of Skywalker at the cinema, there were half a dozen people watching as opposed to it being sold out for Force Awakens.

You perfectly summed up all my feelings on the Obi Wan show in this video. Cheap feeling is exactly how i would describe it and the fact that they tried so much to focus on an uninteresting character that nobody wanted instead of two of the most popular characters in the franchise is just baffling to me. That one interaction between Obi Wan and Vader after his mask is broken was the one thing that made the show worth watching for me. that has become one of my favourite scenes in Star Wars and it really just hammers home what this show could have been if it was given the care and budget it deserved.

I felt very alone in 2015 when I came out of the New Hope remake so disappointed but everyone else seemed to think it was amazing for some reason. I stuck with it for a bit even though I very quickly noticed it was a New Hope remake. But I thought maybe half way through it would take a turn and shock me, do something unexpected. By the third act when the X-Wings turned up I realized nope, this was just a straight up New Hope remake and I was PISSED!

I don't think Andor's poor performance has anything to do with the show at all. I think it's mostly just that the previous shows like Kenobi or Boba Fett were so bad that people have lost faith and don't even give Andor a shot. Just like how noone watched Solo after TLJ.

Thanks for your commentary. I’m a strictly fan of the movies having watched a new hope when I was 5. I wish there had been an overall plan to the most recent movies that built character, raised the stakes, and remained consistent to build true suspense and momentum all the way through. I’m an Andor and Mandalorian stan, so I’m admittedly biased on what I look for in a good Star Wars movie.

I doubt Andor had a higher budget then Obi-wan. I think it really just came down to the competence of the people making it. Like, Andor used real sets, so a lot of the quality is due to the people who found the places to shoot ("location scouters" is their actual title, IIRC). Hiring a good location scouter probably doesn't cost much more then hiring a bad one, but if Tony Gilroy knows good location scouters then that will play into how good the final product is. At the end of the day, just hiring the right people has more to do with a quality final product then hiring a *lot* of people - just look at Rings of Power, they spent billions and it still *looks* cheap. They spent, like tens of millions of dollars on an ocean set so they could make a 'shipping' pun in the final episode, lmao.

What I will never understand is why Disney decided to discard The Extended Universe. There are so many good stories between the novels, comics and video games that they could have translated to great movies and tv shows.

I was beyond disappointed when watching obi wan, I literally didn’t let myself hate it cause I had been waiting for it for so long, I was absolutely dying to see hayden again. Imagine how much better things would have been if they adapted Timothy Zahn's Thrawn Trilogy for the sequels, eventually following them up with the Dark Empire and Yuuzhan Vong. It's sad how so many characters like Kyle Katarn, Mara Jade, Jacen and Jaina Solo, and so many stories will never see the big screen when they were all right there. Disney just chose to ignore them, made them all non-canon, for the purpose of telling their story that was 1/2 nostalgia and rehashing the og trilogy and 1/2 no plan and making it up as they went along. Say what you will about Lucas' prequel movies, at least he HAD a plan!

Imagine a Star Wars production that combines the storytelling and pacing of the Mandalorian with the tone and screenplay of Andor. Andor completely changed my view on this franchise. I'm not saying it's gonna go this direction. In a strange way, as much as the Disney Sequel Trilogy continues to kill my interest in modern Star Wars, in the long run, my dissatisfaction with the ST has further strengthened my love for the original 6 George Lucas Star Wars movies, the Star Wars Expanded Universe, and The Clone Wars. I even tried the Kotor games for the first time because I really wanted to find more Star Wars content to love and somehow… my intense dislike of the Sequels led to me strengthening my love for Pre Disney Star Wars. Currently playing Kotor 2 for the first time and I’m loving every second of it. I’ll never watch the Sequels ever again, but I’ll revisit the EU and Kotor for many years to come.

The child soldier finn, who's connection to the force dragged him and the uncanny pilot poe to escape the heart of the empires remenants, where the force brings them together with rey, a genius trapped on a broken world waiting for parents who would never come. Old enough to learn the lessons of her parents, but to young to remember the the sith who hunted them. Remember when the movie ended, the falcon dropped from orbit to and flew over a jungle to see a temple with hundreds of young adults, practicing with a man in a hood, he turned and drops his cover and we see Luke smile and wave? Wasn't that great?

It's criminal that we havent had an adaptation of either the Thrawn trilogy or the Knights of the Old Republic story. Hell, theres so many rich backstories that could be put to screen, like General Grevious. He could have an entire trilogy devoted to his tragic story.

I believe you are giving Disney and by extension Kathleen Kennedy more credit than they deserve. They had absolutely no plan, no story arc, for the Disney Trilogy. Their lack of a story arc is pretty well documented. This coupled with the fact that none of the Disney movies are rewatchable like the first Trilogy and to a lesser extent the prequal Trilogy leaves Disney Star Wars totally forgettable and people are able to walk away from it.

The nostalgia for Force Awakens was powerful at the time, but it's pretty much gone now This is what happens when you make a film that only relies on nostalgia to draw in its audience Also kind of ironic how Abrams wanted the film to mark a return back to the OT style of Star Wars when the film is littered with CGI and has marvel style humour. It couldn't be further from what Star Wars actually is.

The biggest issue is there was zero story for the three episodes that Disney did. All of the movies before this had some type of over arching plan for what things should look like. Yes, were there things that change like I really doubt that Princess Leia was going to be Luke's sister when they wrote the first two movies (If so that would be kind of sick). Still the over all concepts of things like what the Emperor was, what Vader was seemed to flow. The whole "I am you father" line worked even with the first movie saying that Vader killed his father. In these three movies you had very lazy writing like how this scraper is an ace pilot. Yes she know all of the pieces and parts and likely read or watched things like manuals for the equipment she was dealing with. But to fly a ship and not just a normal ship. Then there were so many questions best left for a later time it was crazy. Then to have the second movie totally go off the rails with the low speed space chase and everything else that did and did not happen this thing was a mess. And then end on the Dagger that shows the place the crashed Death Star chamber is that was created long before the thing was destroyed. I am sorry even cash cows need to be treated humanely where the heck is PETA when you need them.

Personally, I haven't cared about watching Andor for 2 very simple reasons: 1) I lost interest in Disney Star Wars - The Mandalorian was fine for a season or two, and I was very invested in the Clone Wars, but beyond that I just don't care anymore. 2) I'm not getting Disney+ ... I don't care what they put on that streaming service, I got enough subscriptions to various streaming platforms already, I'm not getting another.

Worst part is that, even the parts were you point they were doing a good thing, we can argue that they were not only bad but detrimental to the story as a whole, for example yoda teaching luke something he already knows from more than 20 years.

When I watched The Rise of Skywalker, I didn’t know how to tell if a movie was good or bad. I really struggled to not turn off my TV and when it was over I said “What the actual fuck did I just watch.” I wanted a new villain, and I really hate two lines in that movie. “Somehow, Palpatine returned,” and “Rey SkyWalker.”

You should watch Tales of the Jedi it’s a super easy watch. The Ahsoka ones were good but the Dooku episodes were next level especially his last one. Check them out.

I completely agree with the cameo thing. Yes it is always so fun to see fan favorite characters come back, but lately it's been done just for that factor and we don't see them do much. Id LOVE shows focused on those characters that are actually good, showing new compelling stories with and sides to them. That's why I'm excited about Ahsoka: it has a story to tell while also including lots of fan favorite characters. If the show is based around that character I'm fine with it. We WANT stories with these characters we've grown to love. Andor was amazing, Obi Wan was ok, and Boba was meh. I just want good stories with good characters, at this point I don't care who they are as long as they're compelling!

There is nothing wrong with liking the prequels, both the OT and PT share many problems, but each is excellent in its own right, where the OT is excellent in storytelling, the PT is excellent at worldbuilding, as of lately tho, it looks like they nitpicked the worst pf both trologies and made it into shows. as you say around 20:30, alot of recent star wars has felt off balance because theyre trying to put stories more on a ground level, I havent watched Andor but from Im seeing here is its more of a drama? The issue is the lack of lore for government and culture on many planets because theyve always been background settings for the larger than life Jedi and bounty hunters. I might end up watching Andor at some point and Id look forward to more grounded star wars shows, just not a whole lot of very grainy details for people to seriously dig their teeth into I believe.

I think a major problem with Boba Fett’s character… is that mando is basically who we wanted Boba Fett to be based on the 6 minutes of screen time he got in the original trilogy. I don’t really think they knew who they wanted this new boba fett to be.

I got into Star Wars at the age of 10-11 with all the amount of hype that wen through Episode 7 in 2015, I didn't miss one single Star Wars marathon on tv (at least until I got the six movies on dvd), I saw Clone Wars (2d and 3d) and Star Wars Rebels, watched gameplays and Star Wars YT channels, researched on Wookiepedia and learned about the Expanded Universe (both Legends and Canon), even watched documentaries, commentaries and interviews with George Lucas. I was about to experience my first Star Wars movie in theaters, I went with some of my family members who loved the saga, we loved the movie, but even back then I noticed the similarities with Episode 4, I loved seeing the old protagonists although I would have liked to see them all together. I rewatched the movie like 3 times. I really loved experiencing Rogue One at theaters and I regret that I didn't watched it on 3D, It was amazing to see Darth Vader for the first time on the big screen, I watched it another 4 times. When Episode 8 was released, most of my partners said that it was bad, I was able to notice some details that bothered many but I didn't hate the movie, but the moment when Luke threw Anakin's saber I was like "what?" while some of the audience laughed, I only rewatched it once, the film got worse the more I thought about it and more with each review and analysis that I saw on the internet, even if liked some aspects like Kylo and Rey fighting with Snoke's guards or Luke and Leia's last scene (hands down best moment in the film). I went to the Solo movie with my Great-Uncle who also likes the saga and we enjoyed it, I only rewatched it once showing it to my Mom who didn't got to see the movie. When episode 9 came around I was no longer excited for a new Star Wars film, there was no salvation, my family had sent me the money to watch it but I didn't know what to do, I thought about not watching it but I did, the theater I went to was almost empty compared to the first two, Episode 9 is indefensible and cannot even stand as a movie on its own. I liked The Mandalorian and I didn't expect it to be very successful, to this point I don't know if I still consider myself a Star Wars fan, I feel like I already know what I needed to know, I still like to watch the original 6 movies from time to time and I love the score by John Williams YEAH even in the sequels. It's sad to see the state Star Wars is in now since it changed filmmaking forever, to the point that if it weren't for Industrial Light & Magic many sci-fi and fantasy movies wouldn't have been possible.

18:03 No you see that's an excellent point because I'm guilty of that too, but I'd like to add my own thoughts to that; I've always said that box office cannot and should not be the metric for a film's success, not entirely at least. Because every film and series that comes out is shrouded in the high of the event, but whether or not it still maintains the effects of that high long after it's worn off should be the true metric. For example, I walked out of Endgame thinking it was the greatest thing I'd ever seen and couldn't even watch another movie for several days because what's the point? When the high wore off I realized it wasn't all that great. It was still really good, but not as well compared to Infinity War.

I personally think the "return of palpatine" was inevitable in the sequels, Disney was going to be doing this plot one way or another. I still think they should've done that in the force awakens and not in the last movie in the trilogy.

When The Mandalorian released i was sure Disney was gonna begin to realise that what we need is some creativity, and considering it draws so much inspiration from the western genre i was convinced we was gonna get some more genre based movies/tv shows set in the star wars universe, like an action packed buddy cop movie or a phsycological crime thriller or something.
