During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With only meager supplies, he must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive. Millions of miles away, NASA and a team of international scientists work tirelessly to bring “the Martian” home, while his crewmates concurrently plot a daring, if not impossible rescue mission. As these stories of incredible bravery unfold, the world comes together to root for Watney’s safe return. Based on a best-selling novel, and helmed by master director Ridley Scott, THE MARTIAN features a star studded cast that includes Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Kate Mara, Michael Peña, Jeff Daniels, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Donald Glover.

This is just my opinion, but I feel like these scenes were clipped by someone who doesn't understand English very well. You can read the translations in English, but the scenes cut before the the audio finishes what the script says. It's a common error foreign editors make when they don't understand the language in the film in question.

His book right after, about the moon base, I only found to be okay. I thought he was a one hit wonder. And then I read Project: Hail Mary. I can't wait for that to be a movie. Have you seen any adaptations of The Egg? If you're a sci-fi geek, or even just love a good read Old Man's War by John Scalzi is a must. They'll need Avatar level CGI to make that a movie.

@@censorshipsucks9493 I would have loved to see the complete sequence from him shorting out communication, communicating with rock outline ms, figuring out what they hadn’t yet sent him plans for, trekking into and avoiding the storm, righting then repairing the rig. Even how to get back to the hab from a popped off airlock with a damaged suit. Or talking about the hab fabric and NASA duct tape used to repair the hab, build a tent /rover work room, or how he came up with racks to hold the solar cells and such. So many really good challenges he worked through.

I feel that there were two films very similar. Both were the crew left one guy behind. In one film the estranged crewman rides up into the Martian atmosphere in an unused abandoned ussr satellite and the other in a us rocket. Admittedly one film involved alien artefacts and the other did not …not to get confused.

Interesting that so many of you comment on the editing. Having seen the movie I put things in context. I had two technical problems with the movie that were mostly "oh well". 1) When the airlock blew out he covered the open end with plastic. Anyone think about the load internal air pressure would put upon that plastic sheeting? It's 0.15 psi outside and 8 psi (NASA goes high O2 but lower pressure). Area is pi × r2, say 10 ft Dia or 5 ft radius, 60 inches, 60 squared is 3600 square inch x pi (I'll round off as I'm doing it in my head) 10,800 Sq inch x 8 psi is 86,400 lbs. 2) The second one is he put the reactor in the cab of the rover to keep warm and not use electricity for heaters. He might as well have wired the reactor to the rover and used the electricity both for heat and drive. The wiring job would be easier than manhandling the reactor into the cab. 3) The massive dumb is orbital mechanics. The orbital transfer vehicle just goes round the earth and heads back but can't slow down. It's going very fast and would be like trying to step from the platform onto a speeding train. He would suffer the same fate as a bug on your windshield. Items 1) and 2) are annoying but 3) doesn't work at way. Ever see a C-130 pick up package from the ground? The velocity delta is too much: The OTV is going 7 km/sec and he's going 2 km/sec.
@erpbridge
@erpbridge Жыл бұрын
A lot of these were addressed VERY detailed in the book. Its been a little since I saw the film, but I think it also addressed them, except for the RTG item. For the plastic sheeting point... I believe that the sheeting was only there to block, to a small extent, the friction of what air exists in Mars atmosphere as the ship ascended. A very very thin nosecone. You can see in the other scenes that the whole interior cabin was open to the outside, so... he would have had no cabin atmosphere generated by the ship. Delta difference between his interior cabin and outside were negligible (except whatever effect the air in the cabin had as it escaped out all the side open window portholes. As for the RTG (the nuclear radioisotope thermal generator, the "reactor"), the book REALLY explained it well, but the movie didn't. The RTG was on the Mars ascent vehicle keeping it in standby mode until the crew arrives to setup the HAB (habitat). It works by radiating out 1500W/hr of heat (about the same as a home electric space heater), and can turn that into 100W of electricity. Its not very efficient at creating electricity. The rover batteries... they could hold 9000w each, and he scavenged from the second rover, so he had 18,000w. The heater inside the rover was 400w. So, if he wired the RTG 100w into the rover, and turned on the additional 400w space heater in the rover... he would have been using more than he was providing. As for driving? It was barely enough to even nudge the rover batteries upward. It could give some power... but even better for heat. In fact, in a small, super insulated cabin, designed to be sufficiently heated off a 400w space heater, the 1500w heat the RTG put off was so much he had to strip down to T-shirt and even rip some insulation off the rover as it was too hot inside. And the orbital transfer... the mathematics goal was for him to take off so that he was at the same speed, same orbital velocity, same altitude, same heading as the Hermes on its Hohmann Transfer cycler orbit. With that, he (or rather the pilot, Martinez, remotely operating the Ares) would have been able to dock with a deltaV as close to zero on all aspects as possible... and then, yes, step over as his velocity would have been, effectively, the same as the Hermes. The problem became... well, everything was NOT ideal conditions, at all. It was not the same conditions as a normal takeoff, hence the reason he had to strip as much mass from the Ares4 MAV as possible to get more delta V to get to escape velocity... rather than merely low orbit to reach where the Hermes would have usually been in a parking orbit on normal missions. He threw out paneling, insulation, instrumentation panels, food, medical supplies, spare suits, airlock doors... he even had to throw out all the chairs. In short, he had to get it light enough for what fuel it had to be enough. The math was borderline as to if it would be enough... and as you saw... the math didn't quite match up to real world conditions.
@chrissmith7669
@chrissmith7669 Жыл бұрын
The sheeting was explained in the book as being developed for such unforeseen repairs and was reinforced but supplied in big sheets. It was a smart idea I hope NASA filed away for their Ares flights some day. The RTG didn’t have wires. It generated heat. He could use the heat to power his cabin heat and the oxygen CO2 scrubber he packed in the cab of rover 2. there is a very cool downloadable version of the orbital mechanics models that show his numbers would work. the book version was better in explaining and in the actual rescue.

I don’t understand why people just can’t be entertained by a movie and enjoy it. Instead of trying to tear it into pieces and analyze it’s technical•factual accuracy. IT WAS A GREAT MOVIE…it was entertaining. Who care if it is technically accurate. Schitt man…just burn one and relax. It’s going to be okay if it’s not perfectly accurate by NASA’s standards.
